InactiveWe just got the Zegerid tonight it says on the Marci-kids site that to mix the 20mg packets with 6.5ml of water and then administer the dose. We are suppose to give about 1 pkt daily-20mg.s to start out with. But it says that they need about 7mg per dose to not let it degrad in the stomach. One-Should I mix then two pkts at a time and just try to get the 7mg.s? Two-It says it can be mixed with milk, formula, rice cereal, does that mean don’t mix it with water first just put the powder in the cereal? Three- How long should it take before we see results if this is going to work for us? All the info you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Mix the 20mg packet with 6.5 ml of water which will make 10ml of Zegerid. To get the entire 20mg in one day, you would give 3.5ml per dose (which actually comes out to a hair over the 10ml that it makes.) You definitely could mix 2 packets with 13 ml water so you will get the exact dose of 3.5 ml per dose.
You must mix it with water first but then it can be mixed with formula. We mix Abby’s dose with 1 oz of formula which works great – we usually give it first thing in the AM, around 1:00, then again around 6:00. I have never mixed it with cereal – you could run it by Dr. Phillips. Do not mix with juice or anything acidic. Even Pedialyte can not be used because according to Joel who used to be at Marci-kids, it contains a small amount of acid which can hurt the medication.
We definitely noticed a great improvement after a few days and more or less total relief within a couple weeks. How much does your baby weigh? Abby started out at 3.5 ml at 1 month (about 8 pounds) and now at 7 months (15.5 pounds), she is at 5.5ml. Of course, each child is so different, hopefully this dose will work for you.
Also, if you have problems finding the right size syringes, check with your local veterinary clinic – they have a huge selection and have the caps too. Sounds crazy but that is where we had to go.
I really don’t know of anyone who has followed the Marci-kids recommendations for the Zegerid mixing and dose (there are those that say it does not work but they weren’t mixing it right and giving too low of a dose) that has not had great success with it. Hope it will work for you as well
. These little sweeties don’t deserve to suffer. And don’t worry, since Zegerid is a Pro-drug (meaning it only works on the cells that produce acid), the dose can really never be “too high”. Sorry this got so long. Please keep us posted on how it goes and good luck!!

InactiveRobin-
You should really “sticky” your response under Medications!
You have been so helpful to the many new Zegerid Mom’s that have posted questions to this board about the complicated preperation of Zegerid.
Oh, and to old ones, like myself!

InactiveYes, I agree. You explain it so well!

InactiveThanks – you made me blush
. I think after explaining it so many times, it just flows off my fingers. I am normally not so “educational” but when I feel so passionately about something (like Zegerid and Marci-kids) it just oozes out of me. This board and Marci-kids helped me a lot when we were having troubles so I just want to help anyone who needs it. It is weird, but even with Abby’s reflux so well controlled, I just can’t seem to pull myself away. My hubby probably thinks I am crazy (he is partially right
) when I am spending so much time online but I can’t get away. But now I have to as I have actual work to do at work
. Better get going!!Robin

InactiveI feel the same way.

This site helped me so much with Myles. I hate to not check when there may be a new mom searching for answers like I once was.September 8, 2006 at 12:19 am #13111Anonymous
InactiveI would like to thank you too. Sorry I have done it earlier but it has been rough around the house the last two days.
