Inactiveokay i have some more questions regarding the prevacid. Im a slow learner so bear with me
why do some pharmacies compound the drug for you and some give you other forms to make yourself at home???
what do you mothers out there think is the better route anyway?
i confronted the pharmacist and i say that lightly because i feel that alot- not all pharmacists just dont understand where i am coming from. i asked the pharmacist about the compound that they made for me. grace is on 1.5ml2xday which is 30 mg. the label on the bottle says prevacid 30mg c/sodium bicarb. i asked the pharmacist about the effectiveness of this bottle. she said that it is effective for 30 days. should i believe her? i know that sounds horrible but i just want answers.

InactiveAidan is on the solutabs…I love them even though insurance won’t cover them. He’s been on them for about 8 months now, we never had to try anything else after the prevacid, he was always on a high enough dose for it to help him….I have heard some on here say that theirs worked fine for a month, but others say theirs lost effectiveness after 2ish weeks, could you ask them if you could get 2 weeks worth at a time instead of the whole rx? I think some dr’s will write it that way for the compounds if you ask them.

InactiveHi Eileen,
We’ve always used the compounded prevacid, and it has always been fine for the whole month. I think it probably depends on the pharmacy though. Something you can do is just fill 2 weeks worth of the medicine at a time. Pharmacists are usually fine with this. That way you don’t have to worry about it going unstable.

InactiveDoes anyone know the difference between compounded Prevacid and the prevacid granules?
Thanks!

InactiveI believe compounded Prevacid is just Prevacid mixed with sodium bicarb. It makes it so that you can give it anytime – not time it around food. This is what we use, and it’s worked great. (We actually might switch to the solutabs if we can get our insurance to approve it because the doc says it will work even better, but so far we’ve had great success with the compounded one.)

Inactivesolutabs and capsules are different.
i have the capsules and i mixed them with caracream which made it an immediate release compound so i could give with formula or whenever.solutabs contain lactose and aspartame.

InactiveI think solutabs are a dissolvable tablet that you put in a small amount of water and then administer. I think they work the same as the granuals though. You give them on an empty stomach followed up 30 min. later with a full meal.

InactiveSolutabs, capsules, and packets are all delayed release. So even though they are in different forms, they all should be taken on an empty stomach, and need to be followed up with a meal about 30 minutes later for them to be activated. Solutabs dissolve in the mouth or need to be dissolved in water. Capsules can be broken open and put in the mouth directly or in a spoonful of something acidic like applesauce. Packets I have no idea since we don’t get them here.
Compounded prevacid is a way to turn the medication into immediate release- you can give it anytime without regard to meals because it buffers any acid that may be in the stomach and then is absorbed immediately.
There is a site http://www.ppiknow.com that explains this in a lot of medical detail.

Inactiveohhhhh we were on the packets for a while, I HATE those, er hated them I haven’t tried to use agein, the packets are mixed with water like the solutabs except the white granules are huge and the flavoring tastes like crap. There’s no way to divide the packets equally if you want to give 2 doses, they are powedered flavoring and white prevacid “beads”. So, unless you can take the time to count each bead, you’ll never divide them equally! Plus for some reason that I can’t explain his reflux got worse when he was on the packets.
