Can teething cause a baby to spit up more? Justice is usually a silent spitter, but recently has been spitting up a lot more. I don’t think it is reflux, but just not sure if teething causes more spit up. If it does, why?
February 15, 2007 at 11:02 pm #25007AnonymousInactiveisnt spit up=reflux?
especially in a reflux baby?
isnt this a sign not to wean them off meds yet?
February 16, 2007 at 4:08 am #25013AnonymousInactiveAlana has always been a silent refluxer and not a huge spitter. In saying that occasionally she does spit up a bit. Never can tell why and as soon as it comes it goes. I always blame it (and everything) on teething but I am yet to see the little blighters (sigh). I guess the main thing I have learned here is its about the PAIN. If he isn’t to bothered by it then it is probably not a problem at this stage. I am probably making this up but- teething, more drool-more swallowed drool- changes the stomach environment- more spit????????????
February 16, 2007 at 9:20 am #25016AnonymousInactiveI’ve hear that too. That when they are teething it creates more drool and that aggravates the reflux causing them to spit up more. Bryce does spit up more when he’s teething.
February 16, 2007 at 9:20 am #25017AnonymousInactiveyes more spit up with teething definately.
also i could be his stomach adjusting to the less meds.. because i learned that while you wean them their stomachs try and make more acid.. but i never learned why! but its only like that for the 1st couple days and than it should settle out.. but how much did you wean him by?
February 16, 2007 at 9:51 am #25022AnonymousInactiveOh ladies, I am so confused. His naps are great during the day, but his night time sleeping was horrible last night. I am trying so hard to not blame this on reflux. I don’t know how many more days to give this. I really do think it’s teething.
He was on 5 ml or zegerid 40 mg pkts 3x a day that is 60 mg. I then lowered the dose to 4 ml 3x a day. I saw no difference so I lowered it to 3.5 ml 3x a day. Still I saw no difference so now he is on 3.5 ml 2x a day. He has been on that dosage for 7 days today. I AM SO CONFUSED! It could be teething and then I put him back on the meds thinking it is reflux and then we have to do it all over again. I can see that his gums are swollen in two places. Meaning it looks like he is getting 2 new teeth and possibly 4.
So, aggrivating. Why is it you start telling everyone things are going better and then bam things are bad again. Is it some law of nature or something?
February 16, 2007 at 10:29 am #25024AnonymousInactivewow 60 mg is a lot! isnt it?!?! maybe i dont know because its zegerid.. but that could have possibly been bothering him that much maybe your right?
but i do remember teething making things worse.. just like colds..
February 16, 2007 at 11:09 am #25025AnonymousInactive60 is a lot and it wasn’t helping. I started thinking that that may be part of the reason he wasn’t sleeping. I took him off and he started sleeping so much better. His naps are about an hour long now and they have never been that long before, but his night sleeping is not so well all of a sudden. I checked his teeth again I do see two swollen spots where it looks like teeth are going to be coming in soon. All of this is terribly confusing. Having two babies with reflux, I blame everything on reflux. I am trying so hard not to do that this time. Of course, it could very well be reflux.
Natalie, to answer your questions. I don’t know. I have asked those same questions before. I know a lot of babies do spit up and they don’t have reflux, but I don’t have a clue about babies that have reflux and then spit up. My understanding was if it hurt when they spit up it was a problem. If it didn’t hurt it wasn’t problem. He doesn’t seem to hurt when he spits up. Again though, I have no clue. I wish I knew a Gi doc so I could ask them. I know if I call one though they will make me make an appt. I don’t feel like Justice dr would know the answer either. I called to ask her that question and her nurse called back and lft a msg that said to increase his dose to 5 ml 2x a day. The problem is I don’t know she understood my question. I wasn’t asking to increse his meds. I was asking if the spit up is a sign of the reflux. UGH!
His nose is running too. Is that a possible sign of reflux? I know it is a sign of teething. Also, are blueberries acidic? I gave him some frozen peas in his mesh bag and would like to give him some frozen blueberries, but I’m not sure if they are acidic. Oh, can teething bothering them when nursing?
February 16, 2007 at 11:11 am #25026AnonymousInactivemy son also required 60 mg of zegerid to control his pain. thats one of the reasons we are now on prevacid-and he is on 27-30 mg.
February 16, 2007 at 11:16 am #25027AnonymousInactiveohh so zegerid is twice as much as prevacid? like my son is on 15 mg prevacid and that would be equal to 30 mg zegerid? if soo.. than forget that about what i said it being too much..
February 16, 2007 at 12:22 pm #25031AnonymousInactiveEven though it sounds like teething let me tell you what I have been told by Joel. He said that you may notice some increased spit up when the reflux is under control. The reason is that babies sometimes swallow the spit up because it burns. Now that the acid isn’t burning they don’t mind it coming up and thus the spit up. So I think its fine and he would probably have some other signs if it was his reflux.
February 16, 2007 at 3:00 pm #25049AnonymousInactiveohh thats good news kathleen! when i started the prevacid he spit up more and i have been considering taking him off! well now i wont!!
but i do also agree that if its not causing pain than its not a problem.. and i dont think reflux causes a runny nose but rather a stuffy in my opinion… and is also a sign of teething.. so i wouldnt be too quick to blame it on reflux either! i tend to blame EVERYTHING on reflux.. my family is sooo tired of hearing me say “ohh it must be the reflux” .. so i understand completely, i would wait it out and see after the teeth come in how he is doing..
February 16, 2007 at 10:38 pm #25100AnonymousInactiveMine are sick of hearing..oh it must be teething—-and still no teeth! But I agree if spit up doesn’t equal pain then I would wait it out before I jumped back onto the meds. If the pain returns then you will know…
February 17, 2007 at 2:20 pm #25130AnonymousInactiveMy opinion is that if the meds aren’t working at 60mg a day (which is a really high dose!) then it’s probably not the right med. I personally wouldn’t play around with the dose so much, or you’ll always be wondering what the cause is of the issues that he’s experiencing. I would try a new med and see if that helps. If not, then you can always experiment later on with no meds, but I say if there’s even a chance that the reflux is bothering him, why not just keep him on the meds, and know that you have that factor controlled.
