InactiveSo many factors in my trials to figure this out, holidays, teething, food problems and allergies that I can’t quite isolate the best adminstration of this medicine. It’s clear to me that when it’s skipped, he is much worse so I know he needs it but not sure which way is most effective…
For those of you who have tried it multiple ways:
capsules (delayed release) in caracream given with meals
capsules sprinkled over food 30 mins before meals
solutabs given in syringe with meals
or am I trying these in the wrong way?
We’re also giving aloe vera before each breastfeeding or expressed bottle (helps a lot with burps) and also giving pepcid at night in a couple of spoons of food (ensures we all sleep through the night). Spacing out the prevacid from this pepcid usually puts us giving it at breakfast (when he is most hungry) and around his after nap snack time close to 3 or 4 pm (again another hungry hard to wait time).
Thanks a bunch. Our script is about to run out and I am not sure whether to go solutabs, granules/capsules and whether to try to get caracream from Dr. Phillips since we can’t get it locally.
as always I am grateful for any and all advice! Happy Thanksgiving everybody.
amanda 😉

InactiveSolutabs should be given on an empty stomach and followed up with a meal 30 minutes later.
Are you using applesauce to administer the capsules without caracream? I don’t remember the specifics but it has to be given with certain kinds of foods. Applesauce is fine.
I’ve only used solutabs so I can’t say whether one form of Prevacid is any better than the others, but the solutabs certainly worked very well for my son, and I found them easy to admister; other than timing them around meals.
If the timing around meals is difficult for your son, then the capules with caracream is probably the best route for you.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Inactiveyep solutabs should not be given with meal.
IMO caracream is the easiest way to go!

InactiveI didn’t think that CaraCream was supposed to be readily supplied in the US. Has something changed that they are now supplying CaraCream again. Doesn’t that break their agreement with Santaurus?

InactiveSorry forgot to answer your question… I think the answer is that it really depends on the baby. CaraCream worked best for us, but only b/c Hailey doesn’t eat so I can’t time meals.

Inactivesolutabs were very very easy, i would hold it on the side of his cheek w/ a couple drops of water… or i would put it on a spoon w/ a couple drops of water andthan “feed” it to him.
we now do capsules, and sprinkle it on 1 tablespoon of applesauce.
but the solutabs were easiest to bring out.. now i have to bring w/me the applesauce as well…
well goodluck, happy thankgiving

InactiveI am loving this cheek trick for the solutabs
. Just hoping he isn’t reacting to the dairy in them because now that I know how to do they are much easier than the capules unless you have to split them up over many doses then I think capsules beat the solutabs. Thanks for all the advice. I was confusing the immediate release (caracream way) with the solutabs. Got it straight now! I don’t know about all you guys, but I am so aware of the time of day all the time, I can guess on the spot and be within 15 mins of accuracy every time
. doses, food, poop, naps!!!! Have mercy!!!!

i am pretty sure they are dairy free…they have lactose though (milk sugar) which most mspi babies are fine with.

InactiveYeah, I know what you mean about being tuned in to the current time.
When Myles was on the solutabs our whole day revolved around his meds, his meals, his naps and yes his poops. Dh used to get so aggravated with me because on weekends he wanted us to be free to come and go as we pleased but I always had to have Myles on a strict schedule. I don’t miss those days, but I was always thankful that the Prevacid helped him so much. I hope they work as well for Grant as they did for Myles.

InactiveDear Amanda: Hi. Carson has been on several meds. I was told by our specialist that all PPI’s need to be given on an empty stomach. Then the meds need to be given and after waiting 30 minutes, you need to feed the child. However, Dr. Neidich said with Prilosec it is not as critical. He said that Prevacid needs to be given very exactly every dose. I stay home with my children and really time my doses, but it is not always easy…..
… So, I switched Carson to Prilosec 10mg twice a day. He weighs 17.5 pounds. I do like Prilosec better. The solutabs were easier to give, but I think Prilosec (generic) works better for us. Just our personal experience, but wanted to give you another option. with Prilosec, it is not AS

InactiveHi Amanda. Carson is on Prilosec generic (Omeprazole) 10 mg capsules. I take the capsule apart and sprinkle it on rice cereal. The directions say to use applesauce, but I think almost anything would work. The first generic we got worked slick! It had 9 little white beads in it. I would give him a spoonful with 4 beads and then a spoonful with 5 beads and it would be gone. So easy! THEN, I called for a refill at HyVee and when I got the new bottle, the pills looked different. On the bottle it says “This is the same med you have been getting but the color size or shape may appear different”. I got my spoons ready for Carson and took the capsule apart and it was full of many pieces of what looked like “sprinkles that you may put on cupcakes”. He doesn’t take these nearly as well. HyVee said they switched generic companies due to prices! Ugh!! I am using this prescription up and then when I need a refill, I am going to go to Walmart or Shopko or Walgreens and ask then to check what is inside of their capsules. The capsules we LIKE are white and say: KU114. The capsules we DONT LIKE are half tan and half flesh color and say: APO 010. Our cost on these is $10. With the cost of Neocate being so high, I like the $10 cost for us. Did you have liquid? I was always so worried that when the pharm made the capsules into a suspension, that it would not be stable. It is so hard to know if the baby is refluxing more, if the meds are not stable, if they are teething, if they are catching a cold, etc. I just didn’t want to factor the medicine problem into it, so I always took the capsule apart myself. I hope this helps and I hope you get better so that Christmas can be delightful! Or at least a little fun! Brenda

thanks for that info 🙂
i just wanted to let out know that DR ppi’s like prilosec work best when taken with something acidic like appelsauce.
“DR
PPIs should taken with water or sprinkled over an acidic food such as apple
sauce or yogurt.”“You
should never give a DR with a non-acidic food (such as milk, formula or
cereal), as this will dissolve the enteric coating and leave the drug
unprotected.”

anyhow im glad your son is doing well 🙂nataliachick7 2006-11-25 12:1:35 -
