InactiveMy 3 month old son is on Nutramigen for a suspected milk protein allergy. Ever since he’s been on Nutramigen he’s had persistant diarrhea. The Nutramigen took away the majority of his crying spells.
So here’s my question, has anyone switched to Neocate when the only symptom of MPSI was diarrhea? Or does the child have to be really cranky even on the Nutramigen/Alimentum before that warrants a switch?
If it matters, his diarrhea got worse and changed color when he had beechnut oatmeal cereal (milk and soy free). The ped said it sounded like he was allergic to it.
Thanks!
Allison
ETA: He’s been on Nutramigen for about 2 months now. I do know that they say that Nutramigen can cause diarrhea in the beginning, I thought it was supposed to go away after the baby got used to the formula.

InactiveQuick question….when you say diarrhea, how many times a day does he go? And is it complete liquid or just loose stool? Sorry for the gross questions, the reason I ask is that Addy is on Neocate for a multitude of reasons but she has ALWAYS had very loose stool but only goes once per day (sometimes twice max). She was on Nutramigen for over 4 months and had very liquid stools mixed with mucous along with some other persistent problems. If you suspect he is still struggling on the Nutramigen, you could always try Neocate and see if that helps. When Addy was on Nutramigen, we tried rice cereal at 6 months and it made all of her symptoms much worse….her tummy was already in trauma and the cereal on top of that made it worse! Since Addy has been on Neocate her symptoms have gone away (after being on it for 1 month) but she can not tolerate any solids yet and she’s 9 months. I strongly believe that it was bc she was on Nutramigen for so long and it really messed up her system….her doctors would not change her to Neocate until I went to a GI and he immediately switched…I was unaware you could get it online without a script.
Good luck and I hope he improves soon!!!

InactiveThanks for your reply!
He usually goes once per day, and sometimes I see little bits or I see some on a wipe throughout the day. It’s really strange looking sometimes. But you can almost always see some liquid soaking through most of the diaper, the middle is extremely soft, and there might be some liquid sitting on top. Other times, the entire bowel movement is soft, squishy almost like it has gelatin in it to keep it semi-solid. I know that I have seen some mucus when he was on oatmeal cereal, and then again on the Prevacid Solutabs.
It doesn’t really seem to be bothering him most of the time until he actually goes, and then he throws a fit.
We saw the GI on Monday for the first time and he changed his reflux meds from the Solutabs and gave us a kit to do a stool sample to check for mucus and blood.

my son always had really loose stools on alimentum. i thikn thats just what these formulas do.
if he isnt cranky and doesnt have mucousy poops and the relfux isnt aggrivated i wouldnt think that he needs neocate…October 11, 2006 at 12:58 pm #15411Anonymous
InactiveI am glad the GI gave you the at home test to check for blood and mucous…I hope the loose stools are just from the nutramigen and he doesn’t need to go on neocate. Good luck with everything!

InactiveJust a quick update to our situation. My son Avery was switched to Neocate earlier this week after he started screaming and having bad stomach pains after almost every single bottle! The GI also prescribed Zegerid, thinking that it was reflux before MSPI. I’m the one who asked about Neocate, and the GI said that he had no problem trying both and sorting things out later. We are still waiting for the pre-auth on the Zegerid but Avery is taking a few samples of Neocate just fine.
And guess what? The screaming is GONE for the most part!
I guess mommy does know best
