InactiveThanks Jill! I never heard of antibiotic drops for the ears. It seems logical that they’d work better than oral antibiotics. I wonder why more docs don’t prescribe them.

I’m so glad to hear Aidan’s doing so well!!

Naomi, I hope Ben’s ears are ok.

InactiveWhen we went to the doc. for Sarah’s last ear infection in early May, they prescribed TWO different kinds of ear drops in addition to an antibiotic. The ER doc. said she recently had HER first ear infection and now felt great empathy for the little guys she treats all the time. She gave the ear drops as a supplement.
Anywayyyyyyy, after Sarah’s surgery on Monday the ENT prescribed the same ear drops (Ciprodex…I think) to give every day for a week. He calls them “liquid gold” and says he prescribes drops now instead of antibiotics so that it is a “direct effect” and, unlike an antibiotic, doesn’t have to go through the baby’s whole system. Like someone else mentioned too, you can’t build up a tolerance to the drops either. The ENT says that anytime her ears start to drain (meaning infection), to call him and he’ll prescribe the drops.
That ended up being long and rambling…just wanted to say the drops work!

InactiveWow! Thanks Amy. That’s good to know. I hope more docs start using the drops. Sounds like they are much better than oral antibiotics. If Myles ever gets another ear infection I will definitely ask for them. (If I can remember the name; maybe I better write it down.)
How’s Sarah doing?

InactiveAlex has actually slept the last two nights, but she is definitely still having problems with her ears. She is constantly rubbing them, pulling at them and rubbing them against her shoulders. I’m making an appointment with the ENT today and asking for the referral on Monday at her checkup. I love the idea of antibiotic drops! I’ll have to ask about them. I am picking up the homeopathic drops today to try to help her make it through the weekend. Thanks for all of your input!!!

InactiveOur pediatricians gave us a few sample boxes of the ciprodex, so that when we suspected Dylan of having an infection we could start them right away.
Good Luck, Kim! I bet you will get good results from an ENT..

InactiveChristine – Sarah is doing great. You wouldn’t even know she had minor surgery on Monday. She’s laughing like crazy and is LOVING all the places she can run in our new house (she was confined to one room previously). Thanks for asking!

InactiveWow! Ear drop antibiotics.. I’m definitely asking about those… well, hopefully I will never need to!

Christine, Ben is doing much much better. I’m not altogether sure that his infection is totally cleared up, but he is happy and no fever, so I’m content with waiting until his 9 mo. appt. to get them checked again. Thanks for asking!

InactiveWe also got the drops as prevention after the tube surgery. I asked the doc why they didn’t give them all the time before the tube sx, he said because with the tubes there’s an artificial opening from the outer ear to the middle ear which allows the meds to get to the right place, but without the tubes, the meds can’t enter to where they have to go to fix the infection. Do you think that’s true?

InactiveLori – You might be right. That sounds very plausible. I know that the other ear drop we were prescribed last ear infection was a numbing drop and the ENT said NOT to give it after her surgery b/c there wasn’t enough research about how it does when it goes DIRECTLY to the middle ear. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
