NAET

[Anonymous]

Hi Everyone! I decided to do a little research on NAET, I’ve seen some mothers on another discussion forum discuss it, and it got be interested. I put together a little information from a couple sources that I thought might be interesting to read. I have not used NAET. I encourage any parents who have to discuss it here!

First, this is what one mother posted on http://www.quicktopic.com/23/H/aSxbbAkUULVMX/p8797.8781#QTms g8789, I really liked this mother’s explanation.

NAET is a holistic technique that claims to be able to diagnose and treat allergies. (Allergy is a term used in a much broader sense in this context; it does not mean just IgE type reactions–such as hives, for example–but also an intolerance or imbalance in the body.) The practitioner will test for the core groups of allergens in the first session and may also treat some at that time. Other sessions consist of checking to see if the previously treated allergen group cleared and then treating the next group. One group or allergen is treated per session. The core groups need to be treated in a particular order. It can take some time to treat all the groups your child is allergic to, depending on the number of allergies and how often you go. You may also need additional treatment for an allergen if it doesn’t clear with the first treatment. Our dd was allergic to I think 8 of the (I believe) 12 groups, plus soy…So it is taking a while to work through them all.

A parent needs to hold the baby during the sessions, and all testing/treatment is done to the parent (called the surrogate). The procedure utilizes (I believe) acupressure points along the spine for treatment and does the testing portion through a particular area on your hand. It is non-invasive, painless, and simple. See naet.com for info. I doubt I’ve done it justice in my attempt to explain it… I have been trying it on our dd and still can’t understand or explain it fully! I personally would like something with studies and research and a logical, evidence based explanation. This, for me, is a bit of the unknown, but I’ll try anything to help out my dd!

I can’t really say whether or not we have been helped by it…. She overall is better in the past 10 wks, but I’m also on the TED and she is on meds for reflux, with recent dose increases. But it certainly isn’t hurting her. I think I will finish treatment for the remaining core groups and soy, then see what I can add into my diet. Our practitioner claims she can get her off her reflux meds after she treats her for the “stomach acid” group; that would be quite impressive, so we shall see!

Information from http://www.naet.com/

Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Techniques, also known as NAET®, are a non-invasive, drug free, natural solution to eliminate allergies of all types and intensities using a blend of selective energy balancing, testing and treatment procedures from acupuncture/acupressure, allopathy, chiropractic, nutritional, and kinesiological disciplines of medicine. One allergen is treated at a time. If you are not severely immune deficient, you may need just one treatment to desensitize one allergen. A person with mild to moderate amount of allergies may take about 15-20 office visits to desensitize 15-20 food and environmental allergens. Basic essential nutrients are treated during the first few visits. Chemicals, environmental allergens, vaccinations, immunizations, etc. are treated after completing about ten basic essential nutrients. NAET® can successfully eliminate adverse reactions to egg, milk, peanuts, penicillin, aspirin, mushrooms, shellfish, latex, grass, ragweed, flowers, perfume, animal dander, animal epithelial, make-up, chemicals, cigarette smoke, pathogens, heat, cold, other environmental agents. NAET® was discovered by Dr. Devi S. Nambudripad in November of 1983.

Q. “How do I find and treat my allergies?”

A. Conventional Western medicine has several methods for testing allergies. These include the “Intra-dermal test,” “Patch test,” “Scratch test,” and various blood tests such as the “RAST test” and the “ELISA test.” These can identify dozens of allergens from one test or from one blood sample.

The standard treatment is drug therapy using either antihistamines or steroids to control allergic symptoms. Unfortunately, this does not correct the underlying problem, and often the allergy sufferer experiences serious long term side effects.

The most effective treatment option until now has been complete avoidance of the offending allergen(s). This can be difficult and in some cases impossible. Now, however, there is an alternative… NAET®, Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Techniques.

Q. “Traditional allergy testing and treatments are painful and expensive. Is there a way I can get rid of my allergies?”

A. Yes. By testing and treating with the Nambudripad’s Testing Techniques(NTT)! This revolutionary approach is particularly relevant for dealing with allergies, one of the most stubborn health problems facing mankind today. It is a natural, drugless, painless, non-invasive method that can be used safely on a newborn infant, on the elderly, even on a healthy person to treat hidden allergies that could cause disease in the future. It can be used on pets, invalids, children, even patients in a coma. NAET® can reduce or eliminate allergies to the items cleared by this method.

With this technique, allergens are cleared (treated) one at a time, in a specific order. The good news is that following the prescribed formula, allowing for the 25-hour avoidance of the treated substance, one session is all it usually takes to reduce/clear an allergy. Highly sensitive individuals may require additional ‘combination’ clearings.

You are what you eat! The secret to good health is achieved through right nutrition. What is right nutrition? And how do you get it?

When you can eat nutritious foods without discomfort and assimilate their nutrients, that food is said to be the right food. When you get indigestion, bloating, or other digestive troubles upon eating the food, that food is not helping you function normally. This is due to an allergy to the food. Different foods react differently in different people. What is food for some may be poison for others. You’ve probably heard the expression , “one man’s meat is another man’s poison.” So, it is very important to clear the allergy to the nutrients. Allergic people can tolerate food that is low in nutrition better than nutritious food. But upon clearing the allergy, you should try to eat more wholesome, nutritious foods. You should avoid refined, bleached food that is devoid of nutrients. Many people who are feeling poorly due to undiagnosed food allergies, may take vitamins or other supplements to increase their vitality after they get treated for the specific supplements. If they happen to be allergic to the nutritional supplements they are taking, this can actually make them feel worse. Only after clearing those allergies, can their bodies properly assimilate them. So nutritional assessment should be done periodically and if needed, appropriate supplements should be taken to receive faster results.

Book: Say Goodbye to Children’s Allergies: An innovative, natural solution for children’s allergies. Dr. Nambudripad discusses how to eliminate childrens’ allergies through her drug-free, non-invasive allergy elimination techniques. $18.00

Three reviews from readers at Amazon.com

1 Star: “It didn’t work,” February 6, 2005

“We spent a lot of time and money on Naet and it simply didn’t work. An accurate blood test showed that none of the allergies that were supposedly cleared are still there. My son still reacts. Don’t waste your money”

5 Stars: “This Book is a Life saver!” August 8, 2003

“My children suffered from many food allergies. Our lives were on a standstill before we found out about NAET. Now after treating all known food and environmental allergies, we have our lives back. we go out to restaurants regularly. I don’t have to read the fine labels on the products anymore when I shop in the super market. We can go camping, to the mountains, to the ocean without any trace of our past problems. Thank you Dr. Devi for writing and publishing this book.”

5 Stars: “Helped in eliminating my son’s food allergies,” July 19, 2002

“Although the book won’t teach you how to get rid of food allergies it’s a great resource for anyone who is or is thinking about getting rid of their child’s allergies through NAET. The book is full of case studies that helped me see the not so obvious ways that my son’s allergies where manifesting themselves. My son was allergic to soy, garlic, tomatoes, celery, bananas plus a whole lot of other things. The thought of eating in a restaurant was just a dream for our family. After being treated using Dr. Devi’s technique we are cured and go out to restaurants all the time without any allergic reactions. Buy this book…”

The following is from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAET

NAET is largely regarded by the medical community as Quackery. For example, Dr. Stephen Barrett’s ^[1] view on NAET is not favourable. He concludes, after an examination of the technique and Nambudripad’s credentials;

NAET clashes with the concepts of anatomy, physiology, pathology, physics, and allergy accepted by the scientific community. The story of its “discovery” is highly implausible. Its core diagnostic approach — muscle testing for “allergies” — is senseless and is virtually certain to diagnose nonexistent problems. Its recommendations for dietary restrictions based on nonexistent food allergies are likely to place the patient at great risk for nutrient deficiency, and, in the case of children, at risk for social problems and the development of eating disorders. I believe that practitioners who use NAET have such poor judgment that they should not be permitted to remain licensed. If you encounter a practitioner who relies on the strategies described in this article, please ask the state attorney general to investigate.

Others in the medical community state it has placebo effects at best. A recent review ^[2] concludes that “there have been no studies supporting the use of these techniques, and several have refuted their utility. A beneficial placebo effect may be responsible for the perceived clinical effectiveness in many cases of food intolerance.” There is a distinct lack of studies of NAET, another review of complementary allergy tests ^[3] goes so far as to state that “NAET has to be the most unsubstantiated allergy treatment proposed to date.”

Alternative community views

The above views must be contrasted with the anecdotal evidence of the many testimonials praising NAET ^[4]. An internal survey of NAET’s patients conducted over 10 years reported that “Approximately two thirds of the sample group experienced resolution of symptoms within the first 15 -25 visits.” ^[5]

Too little evidence

Like many alternative medicine treatments NAET does not fit the clinical model for trials and so very little peer reviewed literature has been produced for it.^[2] From a scientific viewpoint the lack of credible information makes it difficult to set a value on NAET’s usefulness. While from those who claim to have been “cured” by NAET there comes a lot of praise. Unfortunately no real conclusion can be arrived at until a systematic clinical trial is performed and reported on.

Here is what another mother from http://www.quicktopic.com/23/H/aSxbbAkUULVMX had to say about this topic…

“We had some success with NAET. My son completed 2 months worth of treatments. It was EXTREMELY instrumental in telling us what he was intolerant of and helping me to tailor my breastfeeding diet to meet his needs. We also so some general overall improvements in him with the treatments, such as better sleeping, much happier baby, better stools. We are now doing BioSET treatments. Very similar to NAET, but also includes the use of digestive enzymes (for both baby & breastfeeding mother). My ds is 16 mo. old and has been extremely restricted on solids & still only tolerates breasmilk (no formula or alternative milks). We have seen some big improvements since adding the digestive enzymes. He is now tolerating the following foods in diced form (as opposed to only baby food form) chicken, turkey, avocado, banana, pear, apple, zuchinni, winter squash. This is a huge improvement for us and he seems to be gaining weight a bit better too. Good luck with NAET, use it with an open mind and recognize that the diagnostic ability is priceless. Best wishes.”
