InactiveHi Everyone,
It has been awhile since I have been able to read and post. I need some new direction something maybe on the edges we are not looking at.
Andrew is doing well for the most part. The reflux monster usually only visits us at night and goes in spurts. Usually, leading up to and following a tooth coming in. Thus my theory is we will get rid of reflux when his teeth finally decided to all show up.
Ped GI’s theroy is he has food allergies whether or not they are showing up in the tests or not. Thus the last months have found us trailing one thing after another. He is off of 99% of Soy, Eggs and Milk. (and I have decided to keep him off until we get another tooth, thus my thinking is we will know teeth or food) He only gets these things should someone slip and then gets trace amounts in processed food (mostly an issue at playgroup, once a month). But here is the thing that has me boggled. We have trialed him all back on these things and it doesn’t seem to matter, except if we give him straight cows milk, it can be in something cooked and no problems.
Alot of you seniors mom’s have told me MSPI…, but if so only speratically and when he is teething? We finailly got the diaper rash cleared up with anti fungal cream (what a great break through that was), so no red ring. Can you see why I am having trouble putting it all together, okay MSPI, thus according to the GI pull him off the problematic foods and his gut will settle down and thus end reflux. So, why are we still having an issue? Temperment (spoiled)?, The key thing I am not seeing?, We will know when he gets all of his teeth and still refluxs? Any new hints girls will be appreciated.
Thanks and take care,
Susan

Inactivei have to chuckle at your theory because i too have entertained that just recently. the 1 yr molars put us both in tears many nights. the two year molars disrupt my sleep quite a bit but at least we both settle down pretty quickly!
but honestly the GI has a point. prior to andy i was super clueless about allergies let alone how to spot intolerances. oh gosh intolerances can have delayed reactions even as far out as several days and they can be subtle. so some intolerances require the presentation of a certain amount of the offending food in order to irritate his gut and cause it to revolt. but once the GERDlings tummy is reacting to the irritant it can be such a vicious cycle that it is hard to distinguish if they are still crying due to pain from some other source or pain due to reflux
my little guy didn’t have a red ring either so for many many months, day in day out i kept scratching my head.
if he has a pretty clear reaction to milk then i would stay off eggs. our allergist told us that the two intolerances go together. also check out gluten intolerances. that is another biggie with GERDlings a lot of the time.
once you have taken those things away for a while and let the pain of teething subside you will have less to confound your trials with food. also i have to recommend probiotics. if he does ingest something that he has an intolerance to the probiotic will help his body to digest it faster and get over that hump less painfully.

Inactivesusan,
it’s been a while since i posted as well. i am with you that this is all so hard to figure out. i’ll just explain about what’s been going on here.
once julianna was diagnosed with reflux, we also found out that she is very lactose intolerant. she now can drink lactose free milk or take a lactaid chewable tablet if she is going to have dairy such as ice-cream or pizza. for a while she would react (increase in reflux, diarrhea) if she had ANY milk product- even in processed, baked ect. foods. once we stayed away from any lactose at all her symptoms went away. now if she has several days in a row where she has milk products in food such as milk in the chicken nugget batter, or milk in pancakes when we go out to breakfast without a lactaid, in the following days all of her symptoms come back. we are now going to trial a new product where she will only have to take one pill a day and it should give her enough of the lactase enzyme so that dairy will not effect her.
now onto the boys… both boys are lactose intolerant as well and same like julianna, too many milk products in processed foods, too many days in a row and lots of messy diapers. both boys have been prevacid free since feb. they have been ok reflux wise, needing mylanta after ear infections- or while on anti-biotics or the several times i’ve trialed foods that contain regular milk (yogurt, parmesean cheese, milk in baked goods ect.)
i can relate that allergy testing is always accurate. at first the blood work said that julianna was allergic to milk. then the skin test said she wasn’t, then when she had her endoscopy and colonoscopy they said it was lactose intolerance. as infants the boys reacted to almost every food we trialed. blood tests all came back negative, skin showed egg allergy for matthew. and same like julianna they were diagnosed with lactose intolerance through endoscopy. both the ped gi and our regular ped said that it is rare for kids this young to have true lactose intolerance, but they certainly do. and they will most likely not outgrow it. thank goodness for lactaid!
so now that i’ve rambled on i am not sure if this helps you- other than to say that i am confused too.
but i don’t think that it’s temperment. based on the fact that julianna is 4 and still has reflux episodes on occasion i am preparing myself for the long haul with the boys. i hope that you can figure out the mystery soon!

InactiveHi Susan! Nice to see you around! We experienced a COMPLETE turnaround in all behaviors once all of Hailey’s teeth were in. Reflux (or my questions about whether or not she was refluxing) disappeared, milk (and other food) intolerance issues disappeared, sleep problems improved, etc. She has been an absolute gem since her last teeth poked through. I’m convinced teething plays a HUGE role in the whole reflux or not question. It did for Hailey at least. Hope things improve soon!
P.S. Hey Laurie! Nice to see you too!

InactiveThanks Ladies,
Boy where to start…
Thank you for checking in on me. I really needed a pep talk. As all will understand when you get to the point where you realize this is not going away quickly, you are okay with the doc’s and all the trials start, etc. You begin to wonder should they just go to bread and water and then you think. NO, what does the bread have in it, all right to much added stuff that is off limits. Fine I’ll make the bread, then your mind starts working over time…is the flour really just the stated flour or is something hidden in it! and then the water has extras too. And by the time one is done…the men in little white coats are waiting for you as you try and figure out what to feed your gredling for breakfast that lacks milk, soy, eggs, etc.. UGH.

See here is the other thing I left out…the only time I get even remote loose stool is if he has gone on food strike and will only eat his fruit. This only adds to my confusion.
Patty thanks for the heads up… when we come off this trial Andrew will go back on Probiotics (I even found them in goat milk formula… of course they are triple the $, any body else notice our gerdlings are already running into thier college fund…
) and he takes coral calcium. For this trail I wanted him off everything to see if I couldn’t get a baseline. If that makes since, I am getting to the point where everything we do seems to run together. Laurie, it was great to hear from you I often find myself thinking of you and all 3 of your little ones. Actually, you are my inspritation in a way…When Andrew has driven me to my whackiest (and not just from reflux, he would be all boy with an added side of cling wrap for mom), I think okay Laurie has 3 and seems to still be sane be Thankful you only have 2!. In other words quit whining. So thanks for parting the waters first.
Hey if you get a chance I would love to catch up and find out why the colonoscopy. dswarren@goldrush.comStacy, I am soo glad to hear about Hailey. I bet she is a pistol. I get to check in on you occasionally, when I get to check to boards. I can’t wait. For those of us that still live in the sticks and have dial up which takes forever are getting DSL, which will hopefully allow me some more time on boards to check and actually post instead of just snoop. I soooo hope to that Andrew will get a total turn around when all of his teeth are in, but at this point I haven’t allowed myself to much stock in it, just in case it doesn’t happen. So, now that Hailey is about to be 2, and can eat does mom have a big birthday bash planned?
Well the troops are tromping up the steps…which means bath and bed time, which means moms quite time is up, ah sigh.
Thanks again to all, Take care
Susan

InactiveSusan! I can’t rememer if I emailed you about this but Lucas’ BIG breakthrough came when we removed GLUTEN from his diet.
Okay so he and I are dairy, soy, and gluten free. What do we eat…? I know that’s the next question. Well, he does eat eggs, so it’s eggs with spinach every morning. There are gluten and dairy free waffles at Trader Joe’s (do ya’all have one up there?) that are banana flavored to boot. You can do all the fruits and veggies, we make all fruit smoothies and Ryan has gotten really good at doing the rice milk, banana and strawberry smoothies. Ryan’s smoothies have been a big hit with those blessed to be NOT on our special diet, as well. Lucas loves his rice milk nad we tell him that everyone else is drinking it, too. I asked him what the baby calf at my parents’ house was drinking (the calf was being bottle fed as the mother had died) and Lucas immediately said, “Rice milk!”
There are pancake/waffle gluten free mixes, and I use gluten free bread, brownie and cookie mixes as well. He eats a lot of hummus, it’s really a staple of his diet. And his other staple are these little chicken breakfast sausages from Trader Joes that I fry in olive oil. Stores like Whole Foods and Wild Oats have been a salvation, and yes, there is no college fund cause it’s all being spent on food right now! haha. But at least he is sleeping better. We also do probiotics, I just found a chewable tablet that is flavored nad I called it “candy” and he was asking for “more candy” after chewing the first one. BIG SCORE! he had started refusing to take it from syringe, lately. This was Primodophilus for kids (age 2-12), by Nature’s Way brand. We also just did the RAST blood testing for major fod allergies, and our allergist (who I loved from the first minute, even though I am completely suspicious of docs now)– said even protein intolerances can cause these fitful sleeping and sleepless night reactions in kids. We also had the blood test done for celiac disease just in case, cause he improved so much when off gluten. We get the results this week Friday.
As you have read, wheat is a common food allergy in children. Problem with removing wheat is that from what I’ve read, the way wheat flour is processed in our country, often other grains that should be safe really aren’t cause they are all done up in the same facilities. Also, if you can’t do wheat, there are a bizillion other grains that might also cause a problem. So, I opted to do gluten free from the get-go when I looked into this possibility. Gluten free things are labeled very clearly now-a-days in a lot of stores. We can always add back in other grains if we get cocky and want to get scientific about adding things back in.
We’ve also been going to my chiropractor, who is amazing with kids. She’s trained in working iwth babies, toddlers, andpregos, but has a family practice. She’s been a big help as well. SHE mentioned wheat as a possible cause for night waking a year ago, when I thought I would starve if I tried it, and when the other docs weren’t saying anything remotely like that.
Ditto is what I say about teething. It’s a complete nightmare. We’re throwing a huge “Lucas has all his teeth” Party when the day finally comes.
You should call me or email for more info on all this. We’ve done the food trials, too. It really su*!%#& to do all this, I’m so sorry to hear that he’s still having these issues! Hugs to you all!

InactiveStacey–
Wow, I’m so glad to hear about Hailey!! Lucas only has two eye-teeth left nad then all four of the 2-year molars. Then we’re DONE!! I can’t wait!!!
I’m thrilled that she’s improved so much!! Hope all is well otherwise. Are you being pestered to have number 2 now that Hailey is finally doing so well? I want to give really dirty looks when people ask me about it, but usually end up trying to nicely explain how he’s only really slept through the night a handful of times. His issues are still all the birth control we need! hahahahahaha

InactiveHi Anne! Oh man, you WILL be happy when those eye teeth are finished. I honestly noticed a difference in Hailey. I KNOW they were painful for her. They took so long to come in too.
Oh yes, everyone wants to know when we will be having baby #2. Within the last two months or so, I’ve seen new babies with their moms and dads at stores and have felt that feeling like I want another one. Dh says maybe next year and I agree. I seriously do not know if I can go through all of it again. We shall see. Take care!
