InactiveHello!
Wow, I have not been on here in a while. But let me tell you how much I have learned here! What a great group!
My dd was on nexium in caracream, but we are now doing nexium on pears. I stocked up on caracream. Is there anyone out there who is using caracream? If so, I would sell for half price.
I cannot remember if we are allowed to post items for sale. If not, please let me know so I don’t make the mistake again.

InactiveChristine ~ I remember you! Hailey and Elana have the same birthday! I’m not interested in Caracream but I am interested in hearing an update on how Elana is doing!

InactiveChristine, how much do you have? Also it the small bottles (i.e. CaraCream junior and what are the expiry dates?

InactiveHi Stacey! How are you!!! I will give you a quick update on us, right after I answer the questions for Lori.
I have 9 bottles of caracream, and 8 bottles of the therasol. Some of the therasol expire in April though. All of the caracream have various expiration dates. I can get you all the dates, let me know if you are interested. As for the jr bottles, I have 5 of those. They expire 10/18/06. The therasol that goes with them already expired. Maybe Joel can tell you whether you can just buy some therasol to go with?
So, Elana has imroved ever so slowly. I really got the hang of the PPI thing, with the help of this board, Joel, and Dr P. I have been spending most of my time on a Neocate board these last 8-9 months. Elana is now eating about 15 foods. She just passed soy a few weeks back. But she has not gained any weight in 8 months. So the doc wants her to stay on neocate because the calorie content is higher. However, neocate just changed their formulation, and LOTS of babies are reacting to it. We will do a trial on the new formulation in a few days. If we fail, not sure what I will do yet. As for the reflux, it is mostly under control. We started to see a doc that Joel recommended at Georgetown Univ in Washington DC. I just LOVE them so much. I have actually been able to cut down Elana’s nexium dose in the last couple of weeks. We have added a naturopath to the list of docs we see(ped, allergist, and GI). The naturopath has put her on some digestive enzymes and a few other supplements. Within 2 weeks of starting that, we were able to cut back on nexium by 2/3. Still can’t get her off the last little bit of nexium, but we are working on it. May try again in a few months and see what happens. But right now, we focus each day on trying to get her to eat and drink as many calories as we can.
Get me up to date on you! Nice to “see” a familiar face!!!

InactiveChristine, thanks for the info. Sounds like it might get a bit complicated because of all the expiry dates…also we are in Canada, so the shipping can get expensive with customs. If you don’t find any buyers, would you consider reposting the offer again in a few months. Depending on our situation, I might be interested again at that time (as I too just recently stocked up).
I did want to ask you, if you don’t mind, if you could elaborate on the “digestive enzymes and supplements” that your naturopath recommended. I took Hailey to one a while back, but she wasn’t terribly useful. Just wondering…

InactiveSure, I will repost in the future if I don’t find a “home” for them.
I don’t mind sharing the info about the supplements. I hope it is OK to do this. Since they are not considered a pharmaceutical drug. If I am breaking some rules here, please someone let me know. And I want to preface this info by saying that we could not have made it this far without a PPI…. It truly saved us and got us to where we are today!
Now every child is different, and I don’t know if what my dd is taking would work for your child. She is on a potent acidophilis, chewable digestive enzymes (containing papaya, protease, bromelain, amylase, cellulase enzyme, papain, lipase, and chlorophyll), liquid detox, swedish bitters to help increase HCL production, and just started salmon oil, but I don’t think that is for reflux, I think it is for another issue the doc is addressing. Outside of the “tradional medical community”, reflux is often thought to occur because the stomach does not have enough HCL to break down the foods. So the foods just churn around and come back up. I have always had reflux, and have started a similar regimine of supplements myself. I have come off the nexium cold turkey and in the last 6 weeks, have had a mild stomach pain only twice. I have changed NOTHING else other than taking the supplements, including HCL (hydrochloric acid).
If you are going to take the route of a naturopath, it is extremely helpful to have one that is well known and respected in the communtity (as with traditional docs). If you want to give it another try, I would ask for referrals, or go to a few health food stores in your area and inquire about who they know of. I called my guy on the phone first, and spoke directly with him, and loved him before I even met him.
Good luck!

InactiveHey there! I have heard about this caracream some from earlier posts. Right now, I am force feeding my dd prevacid granuales in a bit of applesauce. she gets so mad because she doesn’t want that, she wants her milk. Then I have to stare her for 30 mins. after she is already mad. It is a real struggle. I would like to try some just to get us through tough times, like when she won’t eat and i have to get it compounded. Could you email me at sartctx@yahoo.com? Thanks! Sarah

InactiveChristine,
You do know that a PPI is works by stopping the production of Hydrochloric Acid (HCL), right? It’s possible that some of the other ingredients in the supplements that you are using are somehow helping with the reflux, but I would not advise taking HCL supplements or anything that promotes the production of HCL. What many people outside of the medical community (and inside of as well) are not aware of is that food in the stomach is not primarily broken down by hydrochloric acid, but rather by enzymes. Some people are born with a condition where their bodies do not produce any HCL at all, and yet they are still able to digest food just fine. I’m not saying that all homeopathic or naturopathic solutions are useless or anything, but I would definitely caution you against using anything that aggravates what we already know to to be the problem. In other words, it doesn’t really make sense to take one drug that stops acid production, and then take another one that promotes acid productions.

InactiveHi Joel!!! I knew I would get a reply from you on that last post!! Yes, I do know the PPI stops acid production. I questioned my naturopath on this, asking why I am giving nexium, and then something to increase HCL. But, this doc is a big believer in “mothers’ instinct” and said “if you feel like something is not working, tell me and we will make changes”. I just started the swedish bitters (to help increase her HCL production) a few days ago. I have noticed a decrease in food and neocate intake. And she has been a little fussy. So as of today, I am going to stop, and talk with the doc about it tomorrow.
That is amazing to know that some people have NO HCL at all, and they can still eat. Are they in pain all the time???
As always, your input and knowledge is invaluable, and I could not have made it this far without your help! Thanks so much!!!

InactiveWhat is caracream used for? Does it allow you to feed immediately after administering Prevacid instead of waiting 30 minutes? Or, is it just something to help the baby take it?
March 21, 2006 at 4:41 pm #4375Anonymous
InactiveCaraCream is a buffered, flavored suspension agent used for giving PPIs like Prevacid and Prilosec to infants and small children. It was created by Dr Jeffrey Phillips before he developed Zegerid and it is made here at the University of Missouri in Columbia. Unlike the PPI compounds made by pharmacies, CaraCream’s stability has been tested and proven. Yes, with CaraCream you do not have to wait 30 minutes after the dose before giving a meal. It makes any PPI work essentially like Zegerid.
Unfortunately, CaraCream is no longer available for retail sale inside the US, due to a non-compete agreement with the makers of Zegerid. We are able to sell it to families outside of the US though. If you have any questions about CaraCream or it’s older brother ChocoBase, please email me: andrewsjj@health.missouri.edu.

InactiveHi Joel,
Can chocobase be used to give Prevacid? (my son uses the tablets). If I give it to him using chocobase, can I skip the 30 minute wait to feed him???? That’s what’s driving me nuts. That 30 minute wait to feed him!
I don’t want to switch meds (or even forms of Prevacid) at this time, because he is doing so well. Can I use chocobase with the tablet form of Prevacid and then skip the 30 minute wait??
What’s in chocobase. I don’t think he has any allergies. He may be milk sensitive, but I’m not sure.
Thanks,
Christine

InactiveChristine,
Yes, ChocoBase and CaraCream can be used for giving Prevacid. The tablets can be used with these products, but you have to grind them up first in a mortar and pestle or clean coffee grinder. With CaraCream and ChocoBase you do not have to wait 30 minutes before a meal. They contain no proteins of any kind, which means that that they contain no allergens. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions. I will be out of the office starting this afternoon until next Wednesday, so I will not be able to reply until then.

InactiveHi Joel,
I have a friend in New Zealand who has a baby on losec, can caracream or chocobase be used for that? Can she buy from you directly living in NZ? I have some and wanted to offer it to her, but didn’t know if she could use it with losec. I finally feel safe to give it away now that he’s been on zegerid for nearly a year!!! haha
