InactiveHi there. Does anyone know of or has experienced a ‘honeymooon’ period with formulas?
I started Jaxon on Good Start as soon as he was diagnosed with reflux and he showed signs of improvement immediately. Then he needed his meds adjusted and he showed signs of improvement for about a month then again start the reflux signs. (drooling, screaming, arching etc). again the meds are upped (which is a trial all on its own as we live in Northern BC-Canada in a community of 5000. and Dr. still feels that his meds are high enough despite the many printouts from Marci kids that i bring in….anyway). the meds were upped and he shows improvement for a while then it starts again. Somewhere in all of this he has developed an eczema type rash on his face (raised bumps) that never goes away but seems to increase and decrease of its own violation!long story short… I switched him to soy formula which he hates. (i dont blame him as it stinks!), but he seems to tolerate it ok so i kept him on until he got so ‘bunged’ up that his bm’s were like little bratwursts! he would scream and cry trying to pass these huge dry poops and i felt so sorry for him! so i tried him on Enfalac lactofree and he was good for about a day, but now am considering putting him back on soy as he’s been pretty fussy and drooly and spitty.
Now this all prolly sounds like a no brainer to all you pro- moms, but i don’t know if all of these reactions are due to teething which is definately happening regardless or if it’s because he’s trying to crawl (rocking and falling onto stomach) or due to an allergy. I’m so at my wits end and am second guessing myself all over the place. i’m ready to put him back on soy, which he hates eating so feeding will be a struggle anyway. Please any advice would be welcome.

Inactivesorry i just wanted to add that while im happy that he does tolerate the soy formula, i don’t feel that it’s as nutritionally complete as other formulas. Am i completely out to lunch? I know that Babies need a certain amount of fat for proper brain development and soy formula has way less.

InactiveWe seemed to have a honeymoon period of about 2 weeks on all the formulas we tried. This was because in our case that is how long it took for the proteins to build up enough to cause a reaction. Have you tried any of the already broken down formulas like Alimentum or nutramigen? If he has allergies then these might be easier for him to tolerate.

InactiveI haven’t tried any of those yet, mostly due to cost. You know try the inexpensive options first….. Is the constipation from the soy formula a sign of intolerance? It is the only formula that constipated him. I gave him a bottle of it tonight as he’s been refluxing like crazy all day on the enfalac lactese and he gobbled it right down. (probably because he hasnt been eating as much from all the acid flares).

InactiveConstipation is a sign of intolerance but soy is also well known for causing constipation in some babies as well so its hard to tell. The rash might indicate an allergy as well. The other formulas are really expensive, but it was the only answer for us. Hope the soy works out, sometimes there can be an adjustment period, see if his bm’s improve after a week or so.

InactiveI agree with Amber – we always had a honeymoon period too while the
offending proteins built back up. I know Alimentum and Nutramigen are
expensive but they may be worth a try and can sometimes be covered by
insurance of WIC if you qualify. Also as Amber says, constipation can be from soy itself or from an intolerance to soy.
We were on Neocate for 3 months and now back on Alimentum since Marisa
has been 6 months and while the cost is a lot, it’s been well worth it. -
