InactiveHey girls. I have a question. DS has been on straight Neocate for 2 weeks today. Thankfully, his reflux has improved to just a few sporadic episodes a day. Sometimes none a day. He is on equate omeprazole BB at marci dose. I am really pleased with his progress as far as reflux and I attribute most of the success to the Neocate and not the BB. However, I am really concerned with his BM’s. For a few days, there was decreased mucous (just a coincidence I think) but now they are LOADED with mucous still. Not just a little stringy, but globs of green jelly (the sizes of pencil erasers) along with fat curds. Now I know that mucous can take a while to leave the system after switching to Neocate, but I didn’t expect them to be THIS mucousy after 2 weeks. I guess my question is: Do you think he is still healing since the switch, or do you think he is reacting to the BB maybe? BB DOES have lactose.
I’m scared to just drop the BB, although I should tell you that Evie’s Ped GI told us to stop the PPI immediately when we switched to Neocate (PPI wasn’t helping at that point anyways) and this was very successful for her. Her BM’s were the typical Neocate BM’s soon after. What should I do?!

InactiveBummer Katie…There IS a good chance his mucous is still clearing out…but there’s also a chance that he’s reacting to the lactose…ugh. Can you try switching to Prilosec OTC instead of generic? It (supposidely) does not have the lactose in it, and right now it’s basically the same price as the generic. Maybe try it for just one refill of BB and see if it makes any difference?
Although if you want to MAKE SURE it’s just him clearing out, maybe hold off on switching anything with BB until it’s been FOUR weeks on Neocate?? Surely he should be cleared out by four weeks since you were on such a strict TED before he even started Neocate. Then after four weeks if there is still mucous, try changing the BB med?January 14, 2010 at 8:24 pm #65488Anonymous
InactiveI’d give it another week just as you have it…just to see if his stomach is still healing. If things don’t improve, you could stop the BB. Maybe it really is the lactose bothering him. Some of them are just that sensitive. Landen reacted to stuff in the solutabs and then the zegerid too. As much as Drs told me it wasnt enough to bother him I knew better…he was completely 100% elemental at that time other than meds.
Maybe when/if you stop the BB, if you find that he needs something for reflux, you could do just the prevacid beads from capsules in a bit of water. The only downside is you are back to timing around meals. If his reflux isn’t terrbile and you just need a little something, there is always zantac. 🙂January 15, 2010 at 7:53 am #65494Anonymous
InactiveI don’t have any answers for you, as I suspect my DS is not reacting well to his BB either. However, you commented on “neocate bm’s” and I was wondering what they should be looking like. I just had to start supplementing the BF as he was not gaining enough weight. Since I feel like the poop police thses days, any heads up I can get would be great.
Thanks!January 15, 2010 at 8:51 am #65496Anonymous
InactiveNeocate BMs are like a soft, pasty clay. They are a dark greenish/brown/black color.
