Inactiveyeah with beechnut rice cereal. i thought about simply thick but the
doc said the preservatives in there would not be good for a baby

InactiveMy guess would be that it’s probably the rice cereal as opposed to the formula that’s causing the constipation, and the constipation that’s causing the gas.
As for the difference between miralax and lactulose, they’re both laxatives but have different ingredients. Lactulose is a natural non-absorbable sugar that acts as a gentle laxative. It travels through the GI tract and as it does, it absorbs water and therefore adds bulk to hard poop. It is very sticky and thick, and tastes like orange. Miralax is polyethelyne glycol, a non-natural substance. But it is very effective from what I’ve heard, and has no taste or smell or colour.

InactiveI agree with Lori….it may be the rice causing the consitpation and the constipaiton causing the gas. Have you considered trying oatmeal instead? Many moms have (including myself) and found it to be much less binding and less likely to cause gas.
Although you did say his gas and constipation was better on Alimentum. Maybe it’s a combination of both things and changing one (the cereal) might help.

Inactivethanks guys….
yeah i think i may try the oatmeal. with the rice i use the regular
avent stage 2 nipple but im guessing with oatmeal you need a special
nipple?August 22, 2006 at 2:02 pm #11939Anonymous
InactiveRegarding the preservatives in the Simply thick, Taylor has a dietitican that use to work in the NICU and she says they use the Simply thick all the time, it actually is a good source of fiber and would help with constipation. When we were on the Neocate and mixing it with Simply thick the dietican said that was the best since the neocate can be so constipating due to the long chain fats that the perservatives in the simply thick acts as a fiber to help soften the stools. Unfortunately as you know the Neocate didn’t work for us.
K&T’s Mom we take Taylor to the chiropractor as well once a week right now soon to be once a month for her to get adjusted to help with her reflux and her bowel/gas issues. We too feel like it is working, it maybe she is just maturing but it truly is not harming her and she loves it there. She is spent for the rest of the day so we can get so many errands done!

InactiveHello Everyone

I’m new here and this is my first post. My dd is 4 months and was diagnosed with reflux at 2wks. We started her on Zantac and then moved on to Prevacid which she has been on since 6wks. She now takes 7.5mg 2x’s a day but is still having trouble with feedings. She continues to fuss and even cry and arches her back during feedings. I wanted her GI to just add an afternoon dose of the Prevacid to see if this helped b/c she really has gotten so much better. But instead she wants up to try Neocate, she is currently on Nutramigen.
My question is do we switch cold turkey to the Neocate or do I mix it with the Nutramigen? When we switched to Nutramigen we did it cold turkey and she didn’t have a problem, but is was only 6 wks. or so. Thanks so much

Inactivethanks for the info…our doc doesnt really know much about this and i am still thinking of trying the ST.
i keep hearing about chiropracters helping reflux babies. that is really interesing.
does insurance cover that?

Inactivemother of 3,
does she seem to not tolerate the nutrimagen? does she have mucous in
the stools or anything? does she seem to have stomach cramps. if not
then in my opinion your issue isnt going to be solved with neocate but
with the correct dose of PPI.DO NOT switch cold turkey. neocate tastes disgusting and your baby will probably reject it if you do this.
also, that dose of prevacid seems low. my son will be starting prevacid
at about 4 months and his prescription is for 8 mg 3x’s a day.have you showed your doc the info off of marci-kids.com?

She tested negative for blood in her stools, I’m not sure about the stomach cramps and she seems to do well on the Nutramigen. She is very happy unless she is eating or we are trying to burp her. She has started getting up through the night after previously sleeping all night, I’m not sure what this is about but she doesn’t seem to be in pain. Her only issue is the fussing/crying during feedings and seems to be quite gassy. She occasionally coughs and gagges and still spits up alot.
I have told the nurse pract. at the GI’s office about the Marci-kids website and she said that she would look at it and tell the doctor about it. I asked her to ask the doctor if she would consider adding another dose of the Prevacid but she instead wants us to try the Neocate
. I am actually the one who started dosing her the 7.5mg 2x’s a day after emailing Dr. Phillips at Marci-Kids. The GI doctor was only giving her 10mg 1x a day. And when I told them what I did she said that it was a large dose but we would go with it. I am really at a loss of what to do. I would rather try the increased dose of Prevacid before switching formulas.

Inactiveim sorry but dont trust the nurse to “tell the doctor about it”
print out the exact dosing info and the research that backs it up and
either bring it over there yourself or fax it to the doc with a letter
from you asking for a phonecall once the document is read.sometimes you have to be a little pushy if you want things done the
right way. i know many moms on here have done that and got good results.im not sure if the coughing gagging and choking will go away with a formula change. ….
otherwise try to find a good GI doc that is knowledgeable about PPI dosing.

InactiveFor Dylan, his only intolerance symptom was the fussing, crying, arching. He had no mucous, no eczema, etc….. And Neocate was the definite answer for us.
Sometimes I think the reflux is secondary to another problem, so treating with a higher PPI can be the answer if the Reflux itself is the problem, but if the intolerance to a formula is the problem, then a higher PPI is just masking the issue.
I preferred (and this is just my personal opinion) to try the formula change prior to upping the dose because the formula is made for the baby. The meds were completely necessary for Dylan as well, but we actually were able to lower the dose of Prevacid when he went to Neocate. The coughing and gagging was better on the Neocate as he was refluxing less.
We put Carter on Neocate much earlier than the last one, and so far, he is doing fine on Pepcid and doesn’t even require a PPI at this point.
All babies are different and what worked for one might not work for another, but I wouldn’t be so hesitant not to try a formula change if you have been trying different meds, doses, etc….

InactiveI had left a message at Marci-kids about an appt. for Abby and they called me back and I actually got to talk to Dr. Phillips
. He said that he thinks that mose dr.’s don’t dose PPI’s correctly b/c they aren’t comforable with the meds. He said that there have been times were infants have ingested 400mgs and the only thing that happened was their stomach’s didn’t make acid that day. It isn’t like ingesting tylenol which is toxic. He said that she should be getting 3/4th of a 15mg tablet. And we should see a difference within a week. So I’m going to try this before trying the Neocate. Then if it doesn’t help and since I know she is on the right dose of Prevacid then I will try the Neocate. But I don’t see a reason to put her on something new until I know she is on the appropriate dose of Prevacid. So I am going to print off the info. from the Marci-Kids website along with my emails from Dr. Phillips and fax it to her with a letter from me asking her to increase her meds. to Dr. Phillips’s recommedation of 3/4 of a 15mg tablet 3x’s a day and see what happens.August 22, 2006 at 5:07 pm #11984Anonymous

My insurance does cover chiro visits but it has a limit on visits. I know many insurance companies do not cover it.
Alexis’s mom
When my first son was born he had very bad colic & screamed every night from 7 – 10 pm. It lasted about three weeks & I had given up on him. Then I remembered at a visit, I had read about babies. Within 2 visits he was doing great and within a week he was a totally new baby. With Trevor he was 2 days old when he got his first adjustment (on our way home from the hospital). We started out 3 x’s a week to 2 x’s a week for almost 6 – 7 months. We are now at twice a month. I really believe that it is helping because with all of Trevor’s problems the Dr.’s are amazed he is healthy (never been sick..Knock on wood). Also Kyle was 2 1/2 years old before he was ever sick. I had only started going when I was pregnant with my first son because of back problems.

Inactivemotherof3,
That’s terrific!! Things turned around for my little guy as soon as he was on the higher dose of Prevacid.
Good luck and please keep us posted. -
