InactiveHi,
For anyone who’s little ones are on neocate formula, I’m hoping you can answer some questions for me.
I just switched my baby (Niko, 6 months) to neocate from Alimentum – she has all the classic allergy signs- really bad eczema all over, the red ring around the anus (the angry eye), plus reflux, reflux, reflux. She’s on 30mg prevacid/day, so I don’t think she’s in pain, but there’s something irritating her, for sure.
So here are the questions:
How long before I can expect to see any improvement.? Today is day 4 (the pedi GI said I should start seeing her getting better after 3 days, but that seems really optimistic to me)
Also, since neocate is so much thinner than alimentum, the bottle nipple she’s been using now seems to overwhelm her. (choking, caughing, etc.)I tried the really slow one that’s for the same bottle, but it took her 15 minutes to get 1 ounce, and she got really frustrated. What kind of bottle/ nipple have you had success with?
Is it possible that the neocate could actually be making her reflux worse? She’s way fussier now during feeds, and I’m not sure if it is a nipple flow issue or reflux acting up.
It might be my imagination, but her eczema seems a bit worse since starting on neocate. Is this possible?
One more thing- black poop- normal on neocate?
I’m so confused. Please send some insight my way.
Thanks,
Yana

Inactive1st, my son hated the taste, so it took tube feeding b/f he ever got better.
If she’s really having stomach issues, 2 weeks is good place to start for seeing a difference. It takes that long to get everything else out of her system and starting to adjust to the new stuff. I would say 7-10 days you should see something better.Sounds like you’re on the right track with the Prevacid. The excema I know nothing about. Although when I first started neocate with my son I did see some weird dry skin thing going on, but it cleared quickly, within the first 2 weeks. The bottles I don’t know. Have you tried Dr. Brown’s?? I use Avent, and they have worked for my son but he is 10 mo and only really handles the size 2 nipple really well.Black poo, perfectly normal. My doc said something like, this is already partially digested b/f they even eat it (the proteins are so broken down) and it smells digusting, expect gross poo…..You’ll get plenty of others to chime in here soon.
Hope this helps.July 31, 2007 at 3:49 pm #40233Anonymous
InactiveBlack poo is the ugly part of Neocate that no doc tells you about!! The smell will be really bad for a while, but now my lo’s poops are somewhat normal. It did take at least a few weeks to see positive signs, and to really heal everything up it could take 2-3 months from what I’ve heard. My dd was on it for 2 months before she stopped throwing up tons.
The nipples have always been an issue here too. We’ve been using Dr Brown’s (which I hate from all the little parts) since she was a few weeks old, and we were thickening her feeds with Beechnut rice cereal, and had to use the y-cut nipples, and cut them more because she still couldn’t get enough out fast enough. When she finally went off the thickened feeds, we tried level 2, but finally decided on level 3 which seems to work ok. -
