InactiveRyder use to sleep really well. Only getting up 1-2 a night. At least 4-5 hours. Then the past months or so he is getting up more. We seem to have a couple good nights then BAM a really bad one!
I was thinking this was due to reflux but it comes and goes. He will nurse and get really figdety and then cry. Like I said it will come and go though.
I was thinking about maybe the tucker sling but he is 5 months old now and has been turning over since he was 4 months.
I do think his meds aren’t really working that well anymore. We have the endo coming up at the end of the month so I guess we can get more answers.
Is this part of relfux? I kept saying it was due to teething, missing a nap, anything but reflux!!

Inactiveit could be his med dose isnt high enough. when you say he is fidgety during nursing and cries that is a sign he is in pain from reflux. also many babies dont sleep that well if they are in pain from reflux. what med is he on?

Inactiveyou may want to try a PPI. they are more effective than h2 blockers. have you read about medications on marci-kids.com?
my son did okay on zantac for about a week and then we had to switch to zegerid (ppi) and he was 100% better after that.October 3, 2006 at 2:37 pm #14835Anonymous
InactiveI wanted to add that he is also allergic to dairy and soy…
I am pretty careful but maybe I had something with a little bit of soy.
He has had direaha today too and for the past 3 days. Only once a day though..

InactiveWe were on prevacis but it caused him to have direhea and the GI dr took him off of it.
I ahve gone to Marci-Kids.com
I don’t know if this is just him or what— ya know??

InactiveDon’t rule out teething at this age. Maybe you could try some tylenol when you notice it. If you notice that it helps then you could rule out reflux. Plus I have reflux myself and I can tell you that axid only worked on me for a few months and then I was back on Prevacid. Colt has been on Zegerid since one month old but when he was younger we noticed some nights his reflux was a little worse than other nights. Plus the direaha makes me think something other than reflux. Maybe the soy you ate or teething.

InactiveI have tried the tynol. That didn’t seem to be the problem. UGHH! Well it’s good to hear that it could possibly be the medication.
I have been avoiding soy but I was wondering if I had a little bit of it with the rice I had for dinner last night.
It’s just so hard to find out what is going on….

InactiveAidan still wakes up at around 2-4 because of what is called “breakthrough acid”, his reflux flares up all of the sudden, I give him a dose of mylanta, and he’s fine for he rest of the night. (usually)

InactiveCan you tell me more of what is going on? How long does your baby sleep before waking and how does he wake up? How often does this happen?

InactiveIt seems to happen in cycles. We have some good nights then he is up.
He will squirm and fuss. The last time it happened I gave my malox and
then he was better but of course he was then awakeHe will wake after 3-4 hours of sleep-this will be his first wakening

InactiveLet me tell you what is going on with Justice and tell me if it sounds like your baby. Justice will go to sleep for anywhere from 2 to 5 hrs straight and then wakes up. I will feed him and then he goes back to sleep. He wakes back up in anywhere from 5 to 30 mins later. I put him back to sleep and then 5 to 30 mins later he is up again. This happens all night long and during naps. For us this has been going on for 2 months now I think. Hard to keep track when your tired. Anyway, he has had 4 good nights of sleep in those 2 months. He has also started tremours with his head. On the days he has tremours he will sleep great that night and the next day for naps. Any of it at all sound familar?

InactiveUnfortunately it can be so hard to find out what’s going on with the sleep, especially since babies without reflux also have night wakings that are cyclical due to other reasons or developmental. I personally like to see if it might be due to reflux and rule that out. You can try elevating the mattress, though I know it is harder once they’re older. Also, you can try giving some mylanta for breakthrough control, and see if that calms him. Alternately, you can see if your doc will up the meds all together or try a PPI in a different form and see if any of those things help. If so, then at least you know it may be reflux. Another thing I look at is what are they doing when they wake up… are they just up, are they arching or writhing around, screaming, gagging… what do you see and hear- that can also give you a clue as to whether or not it’s reflux. In Hailey’s case, I can tell exactly what is waking her up most of the time… if she’s writhing around and moaning then I know it’s digestive issues, if she’s gagging or coughing or choking, or I hear her wet burp, then I know it’s reflux, if she’s just cranky then I suspect teething, if she’s screaming I know it’s an acid attack, and just plain crying in her case if often behavioural (like she just wants someone to come and hold her)… I am prompt in responding to everything but the last one. Anyhow, my point is that it can be so hard to figure out what’s going on, that you might have to investigate things through trial and error.
Shelby, I honestly wonder if Justice is having reflux attacks after his night feeding. Our doctor told us that for many babies, the night feeding (which I know is still important when they’re small) can also cause really bad reflux flareups b/c digestion is slower at night, they’re lying down, it causes increased acid production at a time when there’s usually breakthrough acid. The other thing, is that Justice’s behaviour sounds a lot like Hailey’s when she was in the amby at that age… I had it beside my bed, and I would just bounce it every time she woke up. What ended up happening was that she started expecting me to bounce her back to sleep everytime she had small wakeups, or any time something bothered her, and we were stuck bouncing her in that thing almost all night long b/c she became dependant on the sensation and she never learned how to do it herself.
Good luck to you both. Sleep deprivation is so awful, though is still the norm for us around here too. Hang in there.

InactiveI think you might be right about the night waking. Well, sleeping in general. I am confused though why some nights would be better than others if it is reflux. I taped him sleeping today and he seems to be waking in pain. I am going to put the video on here as soon as I can. I need some wires that I don’t have to be able to put the video on here. Now I’m stuck. Not sure what to do. I posted another thing under help if you wouldn’t mind looking and telling me what you think. Oh how nice it would be to just increase the meds and things get better.

InactiveOH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just found one of my old posts about Justice before his reflux was under control. He was doing exactly what he is doing now. OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t even remeber that. OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay getting it under control now. Not getting my hopes up, but getting my hopes up. I am totally going to increase his meds and see what happens. Please keep fingers crossed for me.
