oatmeal vs. rice?

i switched DD from rice to oatmeal. she was doing fine with the rice but when i opened the box yesterday the rice was starting to smell a bit. i’ve been using the same box for 4 weeks now. can that stuff go bad?

now about the oatmeal – it seems to be much thicker than rice. she was doing fine with #3 nipples on the rice, but with the oatmeal we have had to use one of those variable flow nipples (advent bottles). the nipple basically has a huge hole in it so it comes out pretty fast (almost too fast for a 2 mo old) i kept the measurements the same. she was getting 1 teaspoon of rice per oz so i did same with the oatmeal. is that right? or should oatmeal be given less than rice? meaning 1teaspoon of rice is the same as 1/2 teaspoon oatmeal??

also, which is more healthy? i would think oatmeal, right?

I think for most babies oatmeal is better because rice is so binding and many babies get consitpated or gassy from it.

Some moms use a blender to get a better consistency. I used to make all of Myles cereal bottles ahead of time and keep them in the fridge and I think that helped. There’s really no firm rule of thumb about the amount….some docs say 1 tsp per ounce, some like mine say 1 tbs for every two ounces, so it’s really a toss up. If 1/2 tsp per ounce of oatmeal works then I’d just go with that.
