InactiveI posted this a few other places as well, but I really am not sure where this could fall into…my daughter has silent reflux and is currenlty on Prevacid…she has had an endoscopy done that revealed slight irritiation of her esophagus but the biospy was normal. so she was put on Nexium and carafate..That seemed to help great for a while…she was sleeping well and everything…and then one day it all changed…her naps went from 1.5 hours to 30 minutes…it seems that 30 min into her nap something is happening that is waking her up…her night sleep was bad as well, but that has improved some. Anyway, long story short…we wanted to get her off the nexium as it is such a powerful drug for a baby, so we had her on prevacid 22.5mg, and I went back to avoiding dairy and soy and gluten..that really seemed to make no difference with her naps, and her evening sleep was pretty much the same, so my husband wanted me to start trying to eat normal again. 🙂
Anyway, it seems taht she has started this groaning thing….she doesn’t cry and she never refuses to eat…but especially while she is eating solids, she will start to groan, however she never refuses to eat her solids..now she has started groaning some during her play time…it is not that she sits there in pain and groans all day…she will do it for a period of time and then look up and smile and start to play. She also seems to be teething, but I wanted to ask other moms with MSPI baby’s if there childeren ever did this. My daughter has never had blood in her poop, but she does always seem to be burping (dairy or no dairiy). She has been seen by three different GI drs…two who told me they didn’t think that she had a protien issue and one that said maybe…anyone have anything to offer? My daughter us happy most of the day, and when she does wake up from her naps, if I go in and rock her, she does fall asleep…it is not like she is inconsolable or anything

InactiveHow old is your daughter? Is she actually groaning or is it more like a grunt? I don’t have an answer for you except for perhaps she’s pooping? But I’m guessing you would have figure that out if it were the case.

As for her sleeping, it sounds like she’s hitting the first transition in her sleep cycle and is having trouble getting through it without completely waking up. The teething could have something to do with it or some other issue that is bothering her. If it’s teething you can expect her to go back to sleeping well. I would continue to help her through the transition with the rocking for now as she clearly needs the sleep.
I’ll be curious to see what other have to say about the groaning. My daughter does something similar when we fed her solids sometimes. I wouldn’t call it groaning but maybe straining? It seems as though she’s struggling with something. She hunches her shoulders, brings her chin down to her chest, holds her breath a bit and sometimes even cries but then she’ll open her mouth for the next bite.
I can’t figure it out.Karen

InactiveHailey makes a loud moaning sound when she’s eating. I honestly don’t know what it is, but it’s constant throughout the whole meal. It’s very wierd, though I’m kind of used to it. But everytime we go somewhere else to eat, people always comment on it. It’s sort of like a whiny “mmmmmmmmmmmmm” sound. Again, I have no idea why she does it. Our feeding therapist has heard her do it (since she literally does it any time she eats something) and she’s commented “how cute, she’s saying yum”. (Yah, right… as she takes one bite and throws everything else on the floor screaming!). I’ve often wondered if it’s something bothering her, but I’ve decided just to leave it be. s&h’s mum2006-8-24 21:57:23

InactiveI don’t know how old your daughter is, but my 6 mo old son just started doing something similar during his play time. I can’t really say it is moaning or grunting, just kind of a strange noise. I think I have just chalked it up to something new he has learned to do with his vocal chords and he is practicing

InactiveKaren,
my daughter is the same…she does the groaning as if she is stuggling with something…and then she swallows and opens her mouth for the next bite. 🙂 I have tried everything with the naps…some people have suggested that because I would rock her before naps, she couldn’t put her self back down..so we tried the whole let her get herselft to sleep..aka cry it out.. and she still only slept for 30 min! Go figure…only my silly little one. So I figured the CIO wasn’t for me…I actually enjoy the time rocking her and if something painful is what is waking her up, I want to be there for her. She is good at night…if she does wake up she can usually put her self back down (every once in a while something major is keeping her from getting comfortabe and she needs my help). I told my Ped about the groaning and she said the same thing about the vocal cord thing…funny it started around 6 months, went away for a while, and has started back up again.
