InactiveAidan is on omnicef for his ear infection (amox. and augmentin didn’t work for his last one). It says to give it 2 hours before or 2 hours after any antacids, Are ppi’s considered antacids? Very obnoxious medication, I’ve been treating it as if they ARE antacids and trying to time the omnicef around the 2 ppi doses is just so friggen hard!!! I’m taking him to the dr tomorrow for his eye…it’s doing this nasty discharge thing, think it’s pinkeye (FUN) and so they can check his ears again (don’t think the annoying medication is even doing anything) But just wanted to see if anyone knew if ppi’s were in the antacid catagory because technically they sort of are, or if the warning meant mylanta type things.

InactiveOh poor Aidan – i am sorry he is going through this, and hope that the eye is nothing serious.
I have no clue about the meds but here is my guess. If you give solutabs, then i think that they are not antiacids but if you do give the compound… well i guess that the buffer is an antiacid??? Again, no clue but a guess!

InactivePoor baby!
I hope he feels better soon.I really don’t know about the PPI’s and antibiotics, but my guess is that it’s fine to give antibiotics with PPI’s. No one said anything to me about it when Myles was on antibiotics and Prevacid. But then again, that’s not unusual!
I think they mean things like Tums and Mylanta…but I’m not sure.Omnicef never works for my kids. I hope it works for Aidan. I always have the best luck with Zithromax and I love it because it only has to be given once per day.
Let us know how Aidan is doing and also what the doc says about PPI’s and antibiotics.

InactiveOMG, I swear poor little Aidan..not only does he have pinkeye in BOTH eyes (not really a huge deal, it clears up in 48 hrs w/the drops), he ALSO has this thing that is in the same catagory as hand/foot/mouth but without the hand/foot. He has blisters and ulcers on his throat…scuse my language but what the F***??? On top of the fact that he’s teething (finally, one broke through the other is almost through), and his reflux is still there (thanks to the teething it’s kicked up again) he is refluxing on top of ULCERS and blisters(although the prevacid is doing it’s job and I don’t think he’s in a huge amount of reflux pain)!!! AND the friggen ear infection is still there but along with the right ear, the left has decided to follow the crowd and it’s infected too!!! SO nope the omnicef did nothing, and the lovely er doc (who WAS very nice though) gave me another rx for amox. just at a higher dose. So he’s taking motrin, benadryl mixed with 2 ml mylanta (to coat the blisters and soothe his throat) eye drops, and the amoxicillan (well haven’t given that yet, I’m taking him to his dr tomorrow to discuss the antibiotic situation). URGHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
I knew all hell would break loose when he got his teeth!!!

That poor baby. Hand/Foot/Mouth is horrible. None of my kids have had it, Thank God. I really feel for you and poor Aidan. It’s viral, right? So they can do nothing but lett it run it’s course? My girls both had a really bad herpes outbreaks (cold sores, not STD!). When a child gets a first outbreak of herpes they get multiple lesions inside their mouth, tongue, throat and lips. It’s hell. When my girls had it I asked for Tylenol with Codeine for them because I couldn’t see them being in so much pain. They make it for infants and toddlers. Liza was only 15 months old when she had it. I’d definitely ask the doc for it tomorrow. (No one offered it to me, I asked). Motrin probably isn’t helping all that much. The Tylenol with Codeine helped so much. I only gave it to them at nap time and bed time because it causes drowsiness, but thank God it helped ease the pain and helped them sleep.
As for Amoxicillin, Myles was on a mega dose (in fact the Physician’s assistant accidentally prescribed a double mega dose for him
) and it STILL did not clear up his last ear infection. Zithromax cleared it up in a few days. Maybe you can ask for that. I’m surprised they haven’t offered it. My clinic always offers it as an option, and I always take it because it’s the only thing that consistently works for my kids. I feel so bad for Aidan. I hope this all clears up soon. He must be so miserable. Sending hugs….
Feel better soon little guy.October 8, 2006 at 8:55 pm #15195Anonymous
Inactivedid you ask the pharmacy, or the doc?? i will look in my nursin drug book for you to see if there are any interactions..
well, prevacid is not a antacid. go to gi health.com. and this will explain it further. also in my drug book it doesn’t say anything about spacing it with ABX. I also know that i have given my patients (im just a nurse) something called the prevpac. this is for people who have gerd severe enough to cause ulcers. therefor the prevpac contains prevacid and a couple of ABX. but like i said im not a doctor and i guess you should always consult with them first
I hope that aidan gets better soon. my son is also named aiden
don’t forget that with all abx comes the awful side effects so keep an eye out for the diarrhea, nausea and vomiting

wait…. calc carb is an antacid so if you give the compounded form then def ask youre doc

InactiveI just wanted to mention that some ear infections, according to our doc, can be viral, so no antibiotics will clear them up. They just have to run their course sometimes.
Coxsakie is a nasty virus! Dylan had that as well, and I am hoping we escape it with Carter.
It must be hard in your house right now with so many things going on at once! Hang in there!

Inactiveyep, I think both of his eari nfections have ben viral as NONE of the medcinces they gave really did anything..so annoying! When Austin was little, amoxicillan cleared up everything! The thing about the throat thing is the er doc was very suprised that all he has is the blisters/ulcers in his mouth and throat, not the rashes. SO to the doc we go at 11 to make sure that the er doc dxd him right, I’m sure she did, just want to double check b/c now he’s wheezing, well, rattling when he breathes sometiems (which is what he did a lot before his reflux was under control) But he slept from 7-6 this morning then back to sleep at 7-9, poor guy was so knocked out from both benadryl and motrin, plus he hadn’t slept the night before..he seems a bit better besides the horrible cough that so obviously hurts him.
ty you all for being so great and supportive!!!!!-I’ll also deff. ask about the tylenol christine, I never knew they had it for such little guys!!!

InactiveGood luck with his appt.
Maybe he’s got the herpes thing like my girls had. When each of them had it the docs both said it could be hand/foot/mouth, but ultimately decided it was more likely herpes. They had the lesions in their mouths, and tongue mostly, but also their gums were bleeding. It was horrible. I hope they give you some pain meds for him.
Please let us know how the appt goes.

Inactivewell, his doc said his throat was VERY red and sore, but couldn’t see any blisters, so I’m thinking the blisters may have been an allergic reaction to the omnicef, My oldest is severly allercig to all cephalosporins. She changed the ear med to erythromycin/sulfisox (that’s the generic, the bottle is in the fridge and I’m being alzy, the brand is pediasomething). Anyway, hopefully all will be well in a week or so. I also decided to pull him out of mothers morning ouot, not b/c Ithink he’s getting sick b/cof that (he has 2 cousins under 2 who we see daily so no telling where these things come from) but b/c he IS sick so much that I’m paying 163 a month for 2 days!!! I’m going to re-enroll him next year, and take him to a free music class 2 days a week at the church instead.

InactiveOh, that’s good that there’s not blisters. I hope the new antibiotic works. The free music class sounds great!
