Has anyone tried using Prilosec OTC? Our pediatrician has been very helpful up to now – we changed docs because our first ped pretty much didn’t believe that Tess had reflux and then we saw a horrible GI specialist. However, after trying Prevacid for 10 days we didn’t see any improvement, in fact things started to get worse (we were on Zantac before that). I checked the MARCI website and it appears that we were on too low a dose but our ped doesn’t want to try anything higher. So at the moment we’re stuck. We could play with the dose of Prevacid but if we increase it we will go through it too quickly and then we’ll have to admit to the doc what we’re doing. I thought perhaps we could try the Prilosec OTC.
Also, how many people found that Prilosec worked better for your infant than Prevacid? I suppose before doing the OTC we could just ask our doc to let us try Prilosec instead but I figured it would be too low of a dose again. But maybe just doing a different drug would help? TIA.

March 20, 2006 at 9:51 am #4246AnonymousInactiveIt’s literally called Prilosec OTC – see link here. http://www.prilosecotc.com/index.jsp
I see the commercials on TV all the time. But it’s a little purple pill – don’t know how you would give it to a baby.
March 20, 2006 at 11:13 am #4256AnonymousInactiveActually OTC Prilosec is a tablet (which does not dissolve) and can only be swallowed not crushed so it’s not really possible to give to a baby.
I think the purple pill is Nexium.
March 20, 2006 at 11:23 am #4259AnonymousInactiveOh yes, you’re right Stacey. I knew it was a form that wouldn’t work for a baby but forgot which was purple pill!
March 20, 2006 at 11:32 am #4261AnonymousInactiveOh well. Thanks for the info, ladies. I have an appt with a different GI on the 31. I guess we’ll just plod along until then .
March 20, 2006 at 12:44 pm #4270AnonymousInactiveI would highly suggest you print out the page(s) from the Marci-Kids website explaining the doses and who they are, tell your docs that this is from a reputable institution and demand that you be given a script for a higher dose. Maybe your doc will feel more comfortable reading the info. Hopefully your doctor will say, “I wasn’t aware there was anything out there on specific doses, lets try it”
FYI: there is a chewable form of Pepcid AC, but that won’t help you since it’s a H2RA not a PPI.

Generic omeprazole is available over the counter in Canada for very cheap. That’s actually how we buy it for my wife’s acid reflux. I actually bought it from a site that has an ad on one of these message board banners on this site. I can’t remember which one it was, but I could try to find out if you’d like.
March 20, 2006 at 3:18 pm #4283AnonymousInactiveThanks Joel. I’ve never seen it so was just curious. We’re doing the prevacid now in the CaraCream (thanks for sending it btw) so it doesn’t really matter. Is it the APO-omeprazole (ie. by apotex- a large generic drug company here). Again just curious, but don’t bother looking it up… I’ll do a search later if I have time.
March 20, 2006 at 3:31 pm #4288AnonymousInactiveThat could be the right company, but I’m not sure. I know that it’s the same as regular Losec – omeprazole magnesium. As with Losec, the only way a tablet like that could be given to a baby is in CaraCream or ChocoBase, and even then it has to be crushed up beforehand.
How is Hailey doing with the Prevacid in CaraCream so far?
