InactiveTo answer all the questions…(sorry for the long post, but I am not sure how else to answer everyone)….
Sarah – I have never heard of protonix. I will look into it. Thank you.
Laura – we have only had an upper GI done. Where do you think we should go next?
Christine – Jacob is a silent refluxer, except on the Zegerid. We heard those reflux episodes loud and clear.
He was on the Zegerid for about one month. He has been off of it for 3 days and NO PUKE!Lori – he is on solids and can only tolerate squash and pears so far. I have slowly introduced things and watched him closely, so I am not thinking the food is a problem right now. Also, what other tests did you do?
Lauren – I talked to his doc about the goat’s milk and she was WAY against it.
As of right now, we have an appt with a different GI scheduled for Feb 16th. In the meantime, I am trying the thickening of his bottles with rice again and I think that may be helping.
Can anyone tell me about what tests you would think we should do next?
Also, what about allergies? This poor baby has had a hard time (from rashes to awful gas) with so many of the baby foods, he was allergic (rash) to the Neocate and Elecare, etc. It just seems to me that allergies may be a big issue for him, but I don’t know what to do for that info.
Thanks for everything everyone!
Johanna

Inactiveif you are concerned about that allergies, i would stop all solids right now. they could definately be contributing to his discomfort-he is in pain right? sorry i forget these things.
many babies that are MSPI and such that end up on neocate, etc, dont do any solids until much later than the “normal” babies. there is a possibililty that he is not tolerating solids and therefore he is uncomfortable. for example, my son was on the highest marci kids dose of zegerid and still in an extreme amount of pain and refluxing constantly. he was on alimentum and no solids. he didnt have any outward signs of allergies but i figured it was MSPI. i switched him to neocate and within a few bottles he was so much better. (although neocate can take months to heal the damage, how long did you try it for?) then i read an article that said if they are intolerant to something that it can actually damage the GI tract and make reflux worse and cause pain.
perhaps this is the case with your son and solids?
i dont know im just trying to think of things.January 22, 2007 at 12:38 am #22858Anonymous
InactiveYou know, if he’s allergic to Neocate, it might be worth giving the goat’s milk formula a try. There’s a chance he might not tolerate it either, but if you’ve tried everything else… My son is on goat’s milk (along with his breastmilk) and it made a huge difference for him. I’m sorry your doctor doesn’t approve of it though.
Is it worth trying another doctor? January 22, 2007 at 7:07 am #22860Anonymous
InactiveMy pediatrician has really been great, so I don’t want to change. Is there such thing as a “baby nutritionist?” Maybe I should try something like that and they will help me make the switch to goat’s milk. I just don’t know anymore.
The Elecare/Neocate saga lasted for about 6 weeks…and the rash was all over his body. Also, he is actually a little better with the solids, although he can only tolerate squash and pears with rice at this point.
I have started thickening his bottles again and I think that is helping. Hard to tell if we were just in a bad stretch there, or if the rice with the bottles made things better!?!?! How much rice do you use though? I forget. Have been adding about 3 teaspoons to a 6 ounce bottle….does that sound right?

InactiveYes, we were working with a nutritionist when Bryce was younger. She’s actually the one that gave us the go ahead for goat’s milk (our doc was okay with it too). So you’re right, that might be a good idea to try. I’m not sure how you go about getting a ped. nutritionist. We had ours from when Bryce was in the children’s hospital.
As for the rice, we used one tsp per ounce, and that worked well for us.

InactiveCan you get a nutritionist through your ped GI or your local EI program. That’s where we’ve gotten ours from.

Inactiveohh i remember her getting it from the dr. sears website, i am not sure if dr. greene has it though. and it is subsituted with brown rice syrup not the corn syrup because that is what the babies can’t tolerate sometimes. http://www.askdrsears.com/html/3/t032401.asp
maybe you can print it out before you go to the nutritionist. you would also need a vitamin supplement if you decide to try it.
i hope it works if you do!!

InactiveOur nutritionist is the one that got us the right formula something without any traces of corn including corn syrup. She is absolutely wonderful and she is gave me a list of all ingredients that have hiden corn in them and she continues to e-mail modified recipes to try out on Taylor. We got her though EI.
