InactiveBen is now 4.5 months old and still seems to need to be swaddled. However, the problem is he also likes to have his pacifier. But, whenever it falls out he wakes up screaming!!! We are all sooooo tired, Ben included. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get him to stay asleep?? He’s crying now and i’ve put his pacifier back in 4 times already. aaaaggghhh!!
Thanks, JodiAugust 22, 2007 at 4:23 pm #41525Anonymous
InactiveThat’s why the pacifier is often both a blessing and and a curse. I read somewhere that you should take the pacifier out of their mouths once they fall asleep so they don’t get used to sleeping with it in their mouths. This worked well with my second child, and I was able to take it away completely at 10 months. It has worked pretty well with Myles as well. He uses it to fall asleep but once he’s asleep I sneak in and take it out and most nights he only wakes up once for it around 4 or 5 am.
The only other option really is to get rid of the nuk and let him learn to fall asleep without it. I know, easier said than done. That’s why Myles is nearly 2 and still has his.

InactiveI guess it depends on if you want him to have a “binky” as we call it or not. Shane also needs his binky when he goes to sleep.. but luckily now he is o.k if it comes out..and can put it back in if it falls out while sleeping. But since your son has a couple months until he can get to that point.. you can either keep putting it back in.. and put a rolled up burper cloth next to it to hold it in while he sleeps or start to ween him from it as christine said. NOW i am happy we have it because it is an easy way for him to get into his sleepy mode and comfort himself.. but when he was younger it was a PAIN!
if you decide to keep it.. it DOES get easier..and you wont have to wake up all night long 😉 .. but if not.. i would pull it out after he fulls asleep.. and slowly try and get him to full asleep other ways. g’luck!! 😉August 23, 2007 at 5:15 am #41537Anonymous
InactiveWe have just given away the “dummy”. For 6 long months I was up 3-6 times a night putting it back in…even though Alana became capable motor wise of finding it and putting it back in…it became an association thing…dummy and mummy! So we went cold turkey. It only took about 2-3 days for Alana not to even notice that she didn’t have it. And now she generally SLEEPS THROUGH THE NIGHT WITH NOT A PEEP! Of course Ben is a little younger than Alana was but if I had my time over I would definately do no dummy!

Inactivewe’ve tried pulling it out when he’s asleep and it totally wakes him up. Ugghh…It’s such a crutch, but it’s killer! I would love to stop swaddling him first, but he seems to do soooo much better when swaddled. I know this is all a phase and he won’t be swaddled and “binkied” forever, but it sure feels like it right now.

InactiveI still have to get up about 3 times/night to give Cooper his paci. There are a few nights where he will have it fall out when I am rocking him after his bottle and I can’t get it back in and usually those are the nights where I get a good 4-5hr stretch of sleep. I have never taken it out of this mouth after he is asleep for fear that it would wake him up, but if it falls out, I don’t put it back in unless he is waking. It will get easier, Cooper like Alana can put his back in his mouth, but has the paci/mommy association as well, but I am dealing with it. I won’t try to get rid of it until a year, less he is ready before then. It helps with his hiccups and his reflux at times. They are definately a blessing and a curse.
