Is it OK to use unflavored Pedialyte every day if it seems to help
loosen stools and ease constipation? If so – maybe 2 ounces 2 x day or
is that not good for system?March 12, 2006 at 8:06 pm #3657AnonymousInactiveI think it’s probably fine. We gave Ally dropperfuls of water from a pretty early age to help loosen stools, although she has always been a healthy weight; water is probably not such a great idea for smaller babies. But Pedialyte has calories and electrolytes in it, so I think it’s a good idea.
March 12, 2006 at 8:30 pm #3664AnonymousInactiveThanks Tiffany. Marisa is far from small – she’s almost 19 pounds and 7
months! The water wasn’t helping much so I didn’t know if the Pedialyte
would be better. But then I heard it might not be good to give every
day…March 12, 2006 at 8:31 pm #3666AnonymousInactiveLandon’s ped rec. putting cereal in every bottle to help absorb the acid, which works great, but caused some constipation. He told us to put up to one tablespoon of Karo syrup in one of his bottles to help loosen stool, and it REALLY worked for him. Start with maybe a tsp. first of Karo and see what happens. Let me know. Good Luck!
March 12, 2006 at 9:13 pm #3670AnonymousInactiveWow, one tablespoon of Karo… that’s quite a bit. The most I’ve heard of is a teaspoon. Does it cause diarrhea giving that much? It also seems like a lot of sugar. But I guess whatever works.
Karen, Does the the unflavoured pedialyte taste like water? Or is it sweet? I might try to fool Hailey and put some in a sippy.
March 13, 2006 at 2:24 am #3674AnonymousInactiveLori (sorry Karen for stealing your post)
Have you started the Duocal? I am telling you because Duocal makes babies go a lot more often and helps a ton with constipation. Sometimes, when Matthew is not eating much, we have to be careful with it because if we add too much to the formula, he starts have really lose stools.
just FYI – you could add it to the water as well. really does not taste like anything but it is more like adding a bit of calcium to the water.. you know, makes it a little bit more basic (not that water is acidic..) – you should try it – matthew does not mind it
March 13, 2006 at 8:07 am #3678AnonymousInactiveNo need to apologize! But if anyone knows the answer re the Pedialyte, please let me know. Thanks!
March 13, 2006 at 10:06 am #3688AnonymousInactiveI can’t think of any reason regular use of Pedialyte would be a problem. It’s one of those things I might ask the Ped their opinion about though.
March 13, 2006 at 11:17 am #3695AnonymousInactiveI wouldn’t give pedialyte daily because Pedialyte is meant to replace minerals/elecrolytes the body loses with diarrhea and vomiting. I’ve heart that these minerals/electrolytes (especially Potassium) can be toxic at high levels. I don’t know what high levels would be, but a baby who does not have vomiting or diarrhea probaby has normal levels, so adding more might be a problem. I’d ask the doctor to be on the safe side. Oatmeal instead of rice cereal helped my babies. Also, flax seed oil is great for constipation. I gave it to both my older children when they were little – still do. I haven’t tried with Myles yet because hasn’t been constipated since putting him on oatmeal. He was beginning to get constipated but improved immediately with oatmeal cereal.
March 13, 2006 at 11:30 am #3697AnonymousInactiveThanks guys. Today is only the second day of even trying the unflavore
Pedialyte and I only gave 2 ounces each day. I’m going to see if it
even helps loosen things (she goes daily but only pebbles/rocks) and if
it does will ask doctor. Don’t like giving juice as prune juice just
makes her puke, pear juice gives her cramps and don’t want to get baby
too used to juice anyway, KWIM?On a related note, my SILs Ped told her that bananas are actually a
“miracle fruit” and can not only help stop up a baby with diarrhea but
can often help un-constipate a baby who is bound up. And that it can
help with preventing stomach ulcers and has an antacid effect. Has
anyone heard this? We are trying a new food Wednesday morning and I’m
tempted to try a ripe mashed up banana based on this information…March 13, 2006 at 11:39 am #3699AnonymousInactiveI have only heard of banana constipating kids, but it makes sense that it would help them go too. My DH and I tell our cross country runners to eat a lot of them because it prevents cramps. Maybe that would help her! I don’t know about pedialyte but when Robbie had RSV we did 1/2 and 1/2 in 6 oz. bottles because milk made him so snotty. He could breathe better with it diluted. I guess I would ask the ped. Also, Gerber makes Liquilytes, which is juice/pedialyte combined. Maybe try the Apple?
Good Luck!
SarahMarch 13, 2006 at 11:41 am #3700AnonymousInactiveYeah, I also heard it is not supposed to be used daily. When my son when in for a catscan, pedialyte was all we could give him prior and I was giving it to him for days after because he liked the sweetness of it. My friend, who is a pharmacist, told me that it is not meant to be given on a daily basis so i stopped using it. Hope this helps, lisa
March 13, 2006 at 12:40 pm #3707AnonymousInactiveThanks guys. I think I’ll stick with water for now and try the banana on Wednesday morning – will keep you all posted!
March 13, 2006 at 3:05 pm #3724AnonymousInactiveKaren, ggod luck with the banana, but watch out. I know for many kids it can be quite binding, my older one included. I’ve never heard of the laxative effect, but assume it’s the fibre if anything that would do it. I know our ped always told us to give it for diarrhea… i.e. the BART diet (bananas, apples, rice and toast). But it’s worth a try. Is she backed up again?
March 13, 2006 at 3:13 pm #3726AnonymousInactiveThanks Lori. Yes, she’s been backed up for some time. For the last 10
days or so only pebbles and small rocks. Lots of them (enough to equal
normal poop probably) but not soft at all. Very frustrating. -
