InactiveSo we gave him pediasure last night and he drank it all up and we were so very happy. Then I go to get him this morning and he had a massive diarrhea blowout and the smell was just so horrible. And his butt has a bad rash all over it from it. Is this normal and something I should expect on pediasure?
I already have his regular ped calling tonight to discuss this weeks issues and solutions so I will ask him but just wondering if this is the norm.

InactiveIt could be from the Pediasure possibly or it could be a virus, especially if it is particularly stinky. I’ll be curious to hear what his ped. says. I can’t remember if Isaac is MSPI. Maybe you could give him less and try again. It probably was quite a shock to his system, but I hope it is o.k. for him, because that is wonderful that he drank it right down!!!! InactiveUsually if it’s terribly stinky it’s a stomach virus. That’s the last thing the poor little guy needs right now.
I hope it passes quickly, and he doesn’t have any problems with the Pediasure. It’s great that he likes it, so I hope he can keep drinking it.Let us know what the doc says.

InactiveI just called the ped gi’s office and talked to the nurse. She is calling the nutritionist for me
She said she doesn’t think virus b/c he is playing and not acting sick……and he had his first meal of the day with no problem. She said some kids do have this reaction to pediasure and do well on other supplements. So she is supposed to call me back as soon as they decide what to doJanuary 19, 2007 at 10:55 am #22669Anonymous
Inactivesylvia gained weight really well on pediasure—-we were able to avoid a g-tube because of it—–but after a while she seemed to have the runs on it all the time so i finally took her off of it. if he gains weight with it and seems happy, having runny diapers might be an acceptable option. i have been told that people on total pediasure diets usually have the runs.

InactiveHow much did you give? I know that most moms with babies with GI issues (not all) say that the pediasure has this effect on babies – it is really hard on their tummies.
You can either introduce it slowly and see what happens… or you could try another supplement like Nutren. If the same thing happened with Nutren, i would start to think there is an MSPI issue there… and then maybe try the Peptamen??
Sorry no real advice – Matthew tolerates his formula which is milk based, but does not tolerate any other formula or yogurt… weird eh?

InactiveThais-I gave him 8oz and he drank it all
(I keep telling them he will drink anything but not eat solids much) Where do they sell nutren at?January 19, 2007 at 12:03 pm #22689Anonymous
InactiveI think Bright Beginnings makes a soy type Pediassure drink. Actually, here is a link for it, if this helps or not, I do not know, just a thought…

InactiveThe ped thinks it is a stomach virus and I would have to agree b/c my friend’s son has and i watched him this week! So far though it was just a one time blowout so i think we are fortunate!

That’s great! Not that he’s got a stomach virus
, but that it may not be the Pediasure. Hopefully it’s one of those bugs that passes quickly. My fingers are crossed for you that he will be able to tolerate the Pediasure once the virus passes.
Maybe give him smaller amts at first like some of the other moms suggested since some babies seem to get loose stools from it. Good luck and please keep us posted.

InactiveOh no! Sorry to hear that he’s got diarrhea! Good news though that he loved the pediasure. I’ve been trying to get Hailey to take it for ages, no luck. She won’t drink it, even if I mix just the smallest drop in with her soy milk… she can sniff it out.
If it is the pediasure, like Thais said, there are so many other ones out there. If he’s not a fussy drinker that’s sure to be a great help to packing on the pounds.
Hope he’s feeling better soon.
