InactiveHi all! I will try to keep this short, but you know how I am.
My sister-in-law just called me with some questions about her new little guy, 7 weeks old. She was initially concerned about his bowel movements but wanted to ask me about Sarah’s reflux as well. The more I got to talking to her, light bulbs started going off in my head…it all sounded familiar from symptoms I had read on here. The symptoms weren’t identical to Sarah’s at that age, but they sounded pretty common to reflux…he is spitting up, inconsolible several times a day, “growls”, gurgles, acts like he’s clearing his throat, several other things like that…these symptoms started around 4-6 weeks old (isn’t that typical? I swear Sarah came out spitting fire and we never even had those first few weeks of bliss
, but I think I’ve read the 4-6 weeks thing on here)I told her to check out marci-kids and to try mylanta. I didn’t know that I could use mylanta with Sarah back in the “mystery diagnosis” days and I thought it might be a good starting point to see if it offers him any comfort/relief. How much mylanta can she give a 7 week old 10 pound baby and how many times per day? I told her to start with 1ml no more than 2-3 times a day. I hope I’m not WAY off on that. I suggested she give it to him at his worst when nothing else seems to be working.
I also asked about his stools and if they appeared mucousy (he started formula 3 weeks ago). She said they are like Play-doh. I think that is a good consistency…doesn’t sound like any mucous so I wasn’t too worried about that…
Anyway, just wanted to make sure I’m steering her in the right direction! Any other insight? THANKS!!!!!

InactiveSounds like you gave her good advice. I would have suggested that dose with the mylanta as well. The symptoms do sound familiar and Alana was one of those who we had 4-6 weeks of bliss with (kind of sucked when I reaslised it was over
). Whats his feeding like?June 15, 2007 at 9:45 pm #36915Anonymous
InactiveHi Amy,
Sorry to hear about your little nephew having reflux. My sister’s baby had some mild reflux, and her doctor told her to give her 6 week old baby 2 ml (or about 1/2 tsp) of Mylanta 3 or 4 times a day I believe. Hope she’s able to get things figured out with her little guy!June 15, 2007 at 9:46 pm #36916Anonymous
InactiveI actually thought of you and Alana when my SIL mentioned “growling”. I remember you describing Alana doing that!

Oh yea, she said he pulls off the bottle during feedings and cries for a while and then when he settles down he’ll finish the rest. She thought that might just “be how he eats” and “all babies do that”………………

InactiveHeather – Thank you! We must have posted at the same time. I will email her and tell her 2ml should be OK…I told her no more than 2, but to start with 1ml.

Inactivetell her to get cherry mylanta supreme cause it doesnt have aluminum…aluminum freaks me out, its a neurotoxin and we still dont know what the “safe” levels are and how it affects us in the long run.

Inactiveoh yeah i would also tell her mylanta can cause diarhea…Trace cant have more than like 2-3 ml a day.
hopefully if it is reflux she can get a PPI right away.

InactiveYes, young Alana sure was a growler!
Funny because he new lastest thing is barking like a dog. Our beagle barks and she mimics her.
Perhaps she’s been thinking she was a dog all along

InactiveI think my GI doc told us we could give 0.5ml per kg of body wt every 4-6hrs but no more than 4x/day for breakthrough pain. But tell her about the diarrhea. When Cooper had the max 4 doses in a day he had like 8 bm’s and got a horrible diaper rash… I didn’t realize until later that the Mylanta caused it…. Pain from spitting vs pain from diaper rash…. I don’t know which is worse… they both suck.

InactiveJust got a call…mylanta didn’t do anything for him this morning. She said 5 minutes later he was crying again. I told her to keep trying…maybe it wasn’t reflux that particular time he was upset.
They took him to the ER because he had some scary projectile spit up. They are military so their medical care is very limited. The doctor they saw suggested cutting back on his feedings. I guess he is taking 6 ounces at a time (comfort eater???!!!) and he wants them to try to cut it back to 3oz and see what happens. The doctor said “if he’s still spitting up and he doesn’t gain weight, we’ll look into meds”. I was SO furious!! I kept saying “I don’t spit up when I have heartburn!!!” I also told her that gaining weight does NOT mean he doesn’t have reflux! Sarah was a chunky monkey pre meds b/c she wanted to eat all the time. Anyway….you can sense my frustration…the same run around so many of us get from doctors. I’m TRYING to get my point across to her. The doc also wanted them to switch to soy formula and see how that’s going at his 2 month check up on the 27th. I told her if it looks like they’re going to do the med route to CALL ME so I can tell her what to ask for, etc…
I feel so helpless!!!!

July 1st they are moving to TN to live with my in-laws. Her husband is going to Iraq so at least she’ll have some help from them and hopefully a better doctor too!

Inactiveyeah sounds like she got one of “those” doctors.
weight means NOTHING.
and to be honest, mylanta never helped Trace either. he needed more powerful meds i guess.
poor baby

tell her to come here and read up and also marci-kids.com.
i think if i were her, i would start by switching to alimentum. that is the first step to treating “colicky” babies. (we all know colicky mostly means some sort of intolerance or reflux or both, too bad so many doctors dont
) who knows, his major issue could just be milk protein/soy protein? and the projectile sounds suspicious, sounds like he is not tolerating milk based, and if thats true prob wont do too well with soy either

InactiveWe are also military and we ran into the same problems with my oldest. This is why she wasn’t diagnosed until she around 3 months. Looking back I still can’t understand how I made it through all that! LOL! She needs to be very forceful when working with military Doctors. I know that sounds funny but most of them see so many patients they are more concerned with getting you in and out that with what is going on. I had a very hard time getting them to listen and believe me with my oldest. When it came to her weight she was always 90th percentile despite her reflux so that always made it hard to get them to understand. She needs to be very clear about the projectile vomiting. I got a lot of “spit up is normal” from the Doctor when I took my oldest in. They almost had me convinced that all babies do that. I had to explain that when she “spit up” it usually landed like two feet away or hit my husband who was standing behind me. After pushing they took me seriously but then we moved and I had to start all over again – gotta love the military! They like to say our health care is superior to the outside but it seems to depend on where you are stationed. I hope you sister can get it figured out. What base is she stationed at? I have to say even the second time around we are still having a hard time with Military Doctors In fact we are still waiting for our referral to the GI specialist (it has been almost a week and half now) so we can get things figured out with Evie. The military health care system stinks sometimes!

InactiveHeather – Sounds like you know exactly what she’s going through! They are stationed in NC, but I don’t know the exact name of the base. The good thing is that the most recent doctor they saw did mention reflux…so at least it’s on their radar. The question is whether they know the PROPER way to treat it! It does stink that after his 2 month appointment on the 27th…they’re moving so she will have to start over. I’m hopeful she can be persistent at this next appointment and try to get on a good dose of a PPI before they move.
I’m sorry to hear that Evie also has reflux but hopefully as an educated mama now you can push for the right things! Good luck!

InactiveNatalia – I think I have kind of overwhelmed her when we’ve talked b/c there is SO much information she needs to know about PPI’s, MSPI, etc…I have directed her to marci-kids, but I’m not sure if she’s visited it yet. She is like I was in the beginning…sort of trusting with her doctors…so I feel really out of place trying to correct the information they’ve given her. I don’t have a phD…just a TON of experience dealing with it! Hopefully they can get it straightened out.
