InactiveSorry about the gross topic title, but that’s how we’ve always referred to my daughter’s constipation… “she has poop issues!” Anyway, she started having these “issues” when we put her on Prevacid as an infant and it really got bad around 1 year. She has been reflux free (aside from some occasional flareups) since 9 months, but the constipation remains a problem. She has been on Miralax for a LONG time now, and I would really really love to get her off it. The doctor is in no rush as the Miralax isn’t, according to him, absorbed in the body; it just runs right through them. He also wanted her to stay on it after Ben was born since siblings often regress in their toilet habits with the new baby addition. But I think we are far enough beyond that now.
She gets tons of fiber, eats fruits and veggies, drinks juice (even prune), gets Benefiber, etc. What else can I do???

InactiveI was worried about this with Myles because one of his doctors said some children will always have issues with constipation, but fortunately he did outgrow his problem for the most part. I still give him benefiber a few days a week and I avoid giving him foods that are likely to bind him up too often (like corn, rice and sugar).
My thought about Claire is that you will never know if she will be ok without Miralax unless you try taking her off of it. Maybe you can ask the doctor (or do it on your own if you feel comfortable) about doing a trial period and just make sure her diet is full of fiber, liquids (water is best) and avoid the binding foods – and see how it goes. The worse cas scenario would be that she gets consitpated and you put her back on it, right?

InactiveOMG this is our nightmare with Hailey… whatever we do she’s constipated. The benefibre worked well for a while, and now she’s constipated again. Make sure she drinks lots of fluids. Other than that, our ped suggested lactulose (like miralax it’s not absorbed) but I can’t get her to take it. Good luck. It’s a bad problem.

InactiveThe miralax is mixed in her morning juice, and it has been for almost 2 years now. She doesn’t even know what juice is like without it! It’s so frustrating because the thought of her always having constipation issues would be so sad.
Her doctor doesn’t think it is related to her having reflux. I think he’s so wrong!

InactiveHey Lori, I’ve been meaning to tell you. One food that always gets her bowels moving is raisins! She doesn’t like them too much, but boy do they clean her out. They work when straight prunes don’t! Not sure if Hailey would go for it, but maybe they would help her too??

InactiveLuke has always had the same problem. We take him to the chiropractor and he always goes soon after we get home. I know that may sound kooky, but I am a believer. He was on 3 meds just to get him to go. We took him off all those meds as soon as we started to see the chiropractor. He started out going every other day and now goes everyday. If he has problems with the constipation we take him back and soon after we get him home he goes. It is amazing.

InactiveI’ll try the raisins. Thanks for the tip.
