I have a question for pharmacists and anyone who’s familiar with the subject. Is there a difference between over the counter prenatal vitamins and prescription vitamins? I’m currently taking PrimaCare One and it costs me $50 every time I get it. I’m paying for my insurance through my nose and I think it’s unfair that I have to pay that much in addition to what I pay already. Is there something that’s generic and would cost me less? Thank you.
I used the generic with Brianna and am taking the generic (well it is my insurance’s brand, but you buy it OTC from them) with this one. I really don’t think there is any difference, but I am no expert, I just know that I have had two different Dr.s for my children, and neither required prescription prenatals. I know some people who get morning sickness from OTC ones have been prescribed prescription, so maybe they are gentler or something, but if you are not getting sick, I wouldn’t worry about it. $50….that is crazy. Mine were $9 for a three month supply.
OTC prenatals and prescription prenatals are basically the same. Some of the prescription ones are smaller and “taste’ better. I just bought generic one’s and compared them to the name brand OTC variety to make sure that I was getting all the needed stuff. The main things to look for are folic acid and iron. I would just go with the OTC one’s and save yourself some money.
Emily- I know! $50 is a little too much. When the pharmacist told me that I had to pay, I was furious b/c I asked them beforehand if I’ll have to pay anything and she never told me that. I would’ve left it there but I had no vitamins left at home so I had no choice but to take it.
Naomi, I’ll ask for the list of OTC’s next time I see him.
Beth, I’m considering going with OTC but I was worried if there is a difference.
