Inactivemy dd was on 7.5mg in the am and 15 mg in the pm. this dosage worked for about 2 weeks then it started to lose its effect. I went ahead and up her dosage to 15mg 2x a day. this worked nicely for about 2-3 weeks, then suddenly it stopped working. Since my dd was also on zantac I weaned her off prevacid for about 3 wks when prevacid lost its effect, and then started prevacid again to see any difference. For the last 5 months or so, she was weaned off and then put back on prevacid a few times .FOr some weird reasons prevacid lost its effect after a few weeks, but it works again after 2-3 weeks off it. I don’t understand why but it works on my dd this way She’s sleeping a little better (wakes up about 2 times a night) and is eating a little better. FOr some odd reasons, zantac has been working better for her at night for about 2 weeks now, so I’m weaning her off the night dose of prevacid.
Hope it helps.

InactiveThank you for all your replies. We are meeting with a new GI team on Monday who is familiar with MARCI-kids dosing and will talk to them about increasing.
I will also ask them about these episodes where Prevacid just seems to stop working.Kristie, which version of Prevacid do you give your DD?January 30, 2010 at 1:21 pm #65683Anonymous
Inactiverollercoaster,
we use prevacid solutab 30mg. I split them in half for 15mg twice a day.
I’d like to know what your GI say about these episodes. My GI was useless and didn’t care to answer my questions. We didn’t come back to him.
Thanks.

Inactivei will definitely let you know what they say
how do you give the solutab to your little one? press in cheek then wash down, dilute in water? how much water do you use?we are having a tougher time as she gets more cognitive…January 30, 2010 at 3:13 pm #65689Anonymous
InactiveI dissolve the half tablet with water in a 3ml syringe and then give it to my dd. I put the 1/2 table in the syringe first then draw water to dissolve it by shaking it. She likes the taste and always open her mouth when she sees the syringe. LOL. I give her about 1/2 oz of water afterward to wash it down. I also make sure there’s no little beads remain in the syringe. That way I know she takes all her dosage.
It’s important to give the meds on empty stomach. I always make sure she has nothing to eat at least 1.5 hr before that. Water is ok though, but nothing else.mailan2010-01-30 15:14:35

InactiveI’m glad that MaiLan will take her meds! Hailey used to be so awful at it, that it made medicine time miserable.

InactiveWe met with the new GI team yesterday. they noted that a couple of things could be contributing factors in our situation, including teething or side effects from Prevacid.
There recommendation was to consider discontinuing our Prevacid for 48-72 hours and just give Pedialyte for fluids to “reset”. has anyone ever been asked to do this and was it successful?Besides that, they recommended getting setup for outpatient OT twice a week and starting Carafate. They wanted us to continue on Prevacid solutab, and although they are familar with MARCI-kids and do use their dosing scale on some of their patients, they felt we did not need to go as high.We are now on day 7 of averaging 5 ounces from 8 am-8pm. For the 5 days prior to this, we were averaging 30 ounces with relatively easy feeds. this seemed to have correlated with when we discontinued compounded prevacid and went to prevacid solutab. We are so baffled why she suddenly stopped feeding, and we don;’t know how many more days can we stand her eating just 5 ounces during the day….We did ask about Prevacid losing effect? they stated they have seen this happen but do not understand why it happens. then, they sometimes recommend “resetting” as I described above.February 3, 2010 at 6:56 pm #65730Anonymous
InactiveSolutabs ofaten don’t work well for kids with feeding aversions. If They don’t take enough in during a feed to activate the medication it won’t work. Also hard to time the feeding right to ensure that they’re taking enough in. And if their stomach doesn’t empty well, then it may degrade before ever doing it’s job. I’d try bufferbabies. Or if the compounded prevacid was working, then I’d go back to that or do buffer babies.
I personally don’t know anything about “resetting”. Sometimes the Gi teams say such stupid things when they don’t know what to suggest. I guess the pedialyte is to prevent dehydration. Sometimes they think that if you stop feeding, then if it’s behavioural it may stop? But it’s not behavioural. Hailey was not eating well, but then suddenly just stopped feeding one day. Like she couldn’t take it anymore and refused. It was awful. I don’t know why they’d ever tell you to stop the prevacid, just my opinion though. It’s so hard. Hang in there.February 4, 2010 at 2:30 pm #65741Anonymous
InactiveThanks for yuor input Lori.
do you or most parents mix in the prevacid with bufferbabie right into a bottlefeed? that would really be great because she’s become very cognitive of any medicine going into her mouth.February 4, 2010 at 4:05 pm #65744Anonymous
InactiveWe used Caracream, buffer babies wasn’t around when Hailey was on the meds. It was the same thing though, buffer babies is the new improved version. Caracream used to taste like a caramel pretzel… salty sweet. Hailey disliked the taste by mouth, but it was not too bad mixed into a bit of formula. I think that buffer babies is fruity taste, and not sure how liquidy it is. Seems like most parents give it orally. The problem with giving by syringe, was that it became a huge screaming battle. We almost had to hold her down and force it in most times that way, and then it would all just come back up. Didn’t help the feeding aversion either. We figured that out early on, which is why we went for mixing it into an ounce of formula. Problem with that was that Hailey didn’t like formula as it was, so if she refused it, or didn’t take it all, she wouldn’t get the full dose. So there’s pros and cons to each approach. We didn’t have another option though. I realized that forcing the meds into her mouth, would only make her feeding aversion worse.

Inactivethanks again for the great info. we are in the same catch 22. she hates the syringe, and i know i am just making her feeding aversion worse each time with the prevacid solutab.
i guess we will talk to our doctor about prevacid and bufferbabies or zegerid and try to mix it into formula like you said. we have the same problem though. right now, our DD is taking < 5 ounces during the day. with that kind of volume, we will never get her full dose in….February 4, 2010 at 4:58 pm #65746Anonymous
InactiveIf her volume is so low, I personally wouldn’t go that route. It may make her hate the bottle even more. I’d try a spoon or go back to the syringe. If she liked the compound and was doing well on it, why did you switch? Can you go back to that?
