Has anyone ever heard of throwing away the unused portion of the prevacid packets? I am hearing that exposure to air makes the 2nd half ineffective. What a waste since we’ve been prescribed half a packet at a time!!

I don’t know about the exposure to the air. But I do know that it is very difficult to split packets. The reason is because the actual medication is the little beads that are in the suspension. It is impossible to split the packets so that you get half the beads each time, in other words, sometimes you might not be giving half the dose just because you’re giving half the packet. Can you try the solutabs?

When Alana was prescribed 1/2 a packet, I just made up the whole packet as directed, syringed of most of the liquid (as per my PM) and was very overgenerous in giving the beads that were left. (I did it in a galss so I could see the beads). This again is a PITA. There is nothing wrong with the packets as a medicine per se, just that they are a PITA to give and divide. Yes you can’t keep the second half of the packet…thats what I was told.
