InactiveFor those of you that had your infant on Axid or Zantac and then had to switch to prevacid solutabs…did your infant get worse before getting better? I have had my 7 month old on prevacid for 9 days (as of today),but the first 2 days I didn’t get it all in her. It seems as though her symptoms are worse, she is choking more, spitting up in her mouth more and swallowing it and really cannot lay flat to even play. I called dr. and he said that she hasn’t been on prevacid long enough to tell a difference. Just curious if any of you have experienced this. She was on Axid since 1 month until we switched to prevacid last week.

InactiveDid you stop the Zantac when you started the Prevacid? It usually takes a couple of weeks for the Prevacid to start helping, and meanwhile, it’s like she’s on no medicine at all. So if you aren’t already, you might want to continue with the Zantac until the Prevacid starts working. Just make sure you space them about 3-4 hours apart.

InactiveIt can take two weeks to see the full effect of a PPI medication. Like Heather said many of us keep giving the H2 Blocker for those two weeks (spacing them 3-4 hours apart).
What form of Prevacid are you using? If it’s the solutabs, packets or capsules it has to be given on an empty stomach and then followed up with a feeding 30 minutes later.
Also check her dose. Many docs underdose because they are not aware of the current research at http://www.marci-kids.com that shows babies metabolize these drugs 3-4 times faster than adults so they need higher doses given at least twice and preferabley 3 times per day.
Also, if the Prevacid you are using is the compounded version it’s very possible that it’s not being prepared properly. Let us know if that’s what you’re using and we’ll give you the details on that.
So, I’d hang in there for two weeks, use the H2 Blocker in the meantime and if you don’t see relief in two weeks see if you can get her dose raised if it’s not high enough according to marci-kids.
Good luck. I hope she’s feeling better soon.

InactiveChristine,. i think she said she is using the solutabs.
so like Christine said, make sure its on an empty stomach and follow with a full meal (6 oz or more if possible) 30-60 min later.
i would split the dose into 2 or 3 doses, because of how quickly babies metabolize these meds.
also, you can use the zantac for now, just try to space it 4 hours apart.
you can also check the dosing at marci-kids.com, as most doctors underdose PPI’s in infants, and in that case you wont see much of a difference.
