InactiveHi all,
This is my 4th time going through reflux. My first baby had silent reflux, managed by Zantac. Baby #2 was probably the worst off, we even got as far as a FTT diagnosis. He was on Prevacid Solutabs and Reglan. Baby #3, also Prevacid, but no reglan. This time w/ baby #4, I asked to go right to Prevacid Solutabs (as they worked well w/ the others and the Zantac we tried with them never worked for long). He was put on 7.5 mg a day. He weighs about 9 pounds I would guess, and is 4 weeks old. The Dr. wrote to give him one single dose daily, we tried that and then now I’ve been splitting the dose which has improved a lot but its still not cutting it. He’s still in pain and refluxes and chokes so much. And comfort nurses constantly (which is difficult with 3 others 4 and under!).Question is, I remember my other boys were on 15mg a day, but I can’t remember what age. I know w/ #3 I had to insist on seeing a GI to increase his dose as the ped wouldn’t do it and I knew from #2 that it was an ok dose. I guess I’m not sure what to do…at this weight (9 ish lbs) can he be on 15mg a day? I know the ped will say no, but what about the GI? I can’t call to ask as the one we saw w/ #3 moved away so we arent’ established patients at any GI clinics.October 15, 2007 at 1:06 pm #44235Anonymous
InactiveHi!
I am sorry you are on the 4th go round of this rollercoaster. WOW, this is not your 1st “rodeo” with this stuff huh?!
I would def call the ped 1st and tell them A) you need a referral to a GI doc ASAP b/c the baby is inconsolable, in pain, etc etc etc. B) you’ve been through this FOUR times and you know this dose won’t work- ask if there is any way you can get at least 15mg to split up each day. Maybe the ped will hear you out with your experience! If not, def ask for the referral and go to the nearest drugstore and get some Mylanta Cherry Supreme to give the baby in the meantime. I think you can give 1.0 ml 4x/day but it must be spaced 3-4 hrs from the prevacid dosing. (you may know this!)I hope things turn around for you soon!jilly782007-10-15 13:06:30

InactiveWell I looked on that Marci Kids site and that says he can be on up to 22.5 mg (I weighed him at 9.5lbs this am). So I have a call in to the Ped, we will see what she says. I actually do have some extra tabs my sister gave me leftover from my niece so if she says no I think I’ll just up it on my own while we wait ages to get in to GI. I have been giving him Cherry Mylanta Supreme and it helps but I can’t give it as often as he needs it!

InactiveJust wanted to add that my son, like so many others on this site, needed exactly the dosage that marci kids recommends to have any relief. He was still pretty much fussing/crying all day even on 22.5 mg, but finally improved on 30 mg at 2 1/2 months (somewhere around 12 1/2 lbs). Even with that, he still needs some Zantac in the middle of the day. Maybe you could print out the marci kids info and take it to the doctor next time?? That might help for her to see the research for herself. Good luck!!

InactiveWith the solutabs- make sure that you’re giving them on an empty stomach and followed up with a meal 30 minutes later. The meal is needed to activate the med at the point the levels peak in the bloodstream.
