InactiveDoes anyone know if these are related? Ben is a big boy, so his rolls are numerous.
The last few days I’ve noticed that he is a little rashy behind his head, around his neck and ears. Yesterday, he had what looked like eczema on his forehead (about the size of a quarter). It has faded somewhat today, but I’m concerned. He has been grabbing at the back of his neck and ears too, as if they are itchy. It has been pretty hot, and I just wondered if the heat could cause this, or should I look for other reasons. He is now crawling (YEA!), and the poor kid works up a serious sweat while doing this, and he sometimes will put his forhead down on the carpet, you know like he’s resting?
I did start trialing blueberries mixed with apples on Friday, so I guess that could be it, but a reaction to blueberries???? ARG! I didn’t give them to him today to see if that makes a difference.
We use the Aveeno lotions and baby wash already, and nothing else has changed.. I’ve been eating a few more new things.. ugh.. I hate this guess work.

InactiveThis is off the subject sort of, but Myles used to get consitpated from blueberries (and apples)
and I’m quite sure now that he’s actually allergic to apples because every time he has them for more than one day he gets a serious diaper rash.
So, I totally get the confusion and frustration when it comes to foods. At Ben’s age Myles was still only eating five or six foods because of his problems with reflux and consitpation.Anyway, about the eczema…if blueberries is the only thing you’ve added I’d probably stop them for now and try again in two weeks and see if it happens again.
My kids were all prone to eczema and for them it was dairy that made it flare up more than anything else, but even once they outgrew the actual sensitivity and their eczema was basically gone, they all still have an occassional flare up. Myles gets it on his cheeks frequently. I don’t even fret about it anymore because he’s my third and the other two used to get it too. Some people will always be prone to eczema. My dh still gets it on his arms and back every winter. It’s not food related at all with him.
The quarter size patch on his forhead sounds more like eczema to me than the rash on the back of his head. Could it be heat rash? If so keeping it clean and dry should help clear it up.
I’m definitely not a rash expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I hope that helps some.

InactiveHelps alot actually. Do you think the patch on his head his heat rash or the stuff on the back of his neck?
I think Ben and Myles have a bit in common. He woke up from his nap and had his first dirty diaper of the day (usually a 3/day pooer) and it was a hard little ball! So, I think the blueberries are out for a while. I guess it could be the apples too, though he has done plain applesauce without problems. I don’t usually give it several days in a row though, so maybe he’s ok with it just every once and awhile.
It’s good to know too that Myles was a restriced eater. I feel bad for him. He just eats a few things, and I know he wants more. His sister was eating a ton of table food at this age, and I can’t imagine Ben doing this for quite a while yet.

InactiveI’m guessing that the stuff on the back of his head is heat rash. That part of the body is often up against things like the carseat and if he’s chubby he may have folds of skin which sweat. Also some kids (and adults) sweat a lot around the head and neck. That’s why I’m guessing it could be heat rash/prickly heat.
I worried an awful lot about Myles’ restricted diet too, but it’s getting better with time. My girls are much better eaters, but Myles is improving. He loves a few really healthy things and that helps.

InactiveHi. My son was born 9/8, so they are about the same age and talk about rolls! At his 9 mo. appointment he weighed almost 25lbs. My 2.5 year old weighs 30 lbs! Anyway, before I cut out dairy, my younger son always had these red patches behind his knees. My friend who is a PA told me that it’s the most common place for exzema. Once I eliminated dairy, however, they went away.
More relevantly, however, last night I noticed a rash at the back of my younger son’s neck, in the hairline and behind his ears. It sort of looked like heat rash and that’s what I’m thinking it is. He, too, works so hard to crawl and ends up so sweaty. I’m just going to keep wiping him down and hopefully limit the heat rash. Although blueberries sound like a cluprit, it could just be heat.
I, too, hate this guess work. We’re (well, I’m) trialing dairy this week and my BF son (the younger one) seems a bit more cranky. Could he be teething, could it be the rash (could the rash be from dairy — don’t think so, that wasn’t a symptom when I was eating it), could it be the dairy, could it be the age? UGh.
Good luck.

InactiveHey partyoffour,
That sounds so familiar! I’ve been off dairy for a LONG stinkin’ time too, and I can’t wait until I can eat it again!
I haven’t had any luck adding it back in though, but, like you mentioned, was he really reacting it, or to any of the numerous other possibilities???Let me know if you figure out a good way to battle the heat rash. His looked a bit worse tonight. He woke up sweaty from his nap and was sweaty when I got him out of his high chair tonight. I just can’t keep him dry! We turned the air conditioning on a bit higher, so maybe that will help. He really seemed to be bothered by it tonight too. I wonder if there’s anything I can put on it?

InactiveLast Sunday we had PIZZA. It had been 7 months since I’d had a slice. It was AMAZING. My son seemed no worse … I think maybe we’re over the hump. Now, if he could just sleep past 4 a.m.!
Good luck keeping your son cool. I just bought some sleveless rompers figuring the looseness would help.

InactiveNaomi,
My niece is a big girl also and has tons of rolls. She gets red areas in her rolls b/c she doesn’t get much air to area. She has no allergies or reflux or anything so I know hers is just from lack of air circulation. You may want to try some Aquaphor… it works wonders for us whenever Cooper gets any red areas.
