InactiveOn Friday, I called my son’s Ped. to ask for Prilosec capsules instead of the suspension (I just don’t believe it’s being mixed correctly and I’m tired of worrying about it). She’s not “comfortable” prescribing them to me and having me break them open to put the correct amount of granules in his food, etc. (says she’s never had anyone do this before, but his babysitter did this with her kids, so I know it’s possible.) So she suggested Prevacid solutabs. I’m worried about changing prescriptions because Prilosec has worked well for him…but I’d love to not have the compound anymore. So I’m debating whether to do the prevacid or not. Anyone think one’s better than the other? Anyone have a child do well with one but not the other? I’d hate to start all over. When you switch brands, does it take another two weeks for the new brand to kick in? Thanks in advance for any advice.

InactiveAs a follow up to my own post
,
I was just reading through old posts and I see that solutabs have
aspartame in them. This disturbs me. I’m BF and have been avoiding my
beloved diet coke because I don’t think aspartame can be good for a
baby. I don’t think it’s good for adults, but I’m addicted, so if I
weren’t BF, I’d still be drinking it
BUT, I’m really reconsidering the solutabs for this reason. Which is really ANNOYING because the thing I was really looking forward to, should I choose to go with the solutabs, was that it would taste so much better than the Prilosec, which Cade absolutely hates and I feel that I’m torturing him on a daily basis. Now I’m reeeeeeeeeeeally confused. Does anyone else have concerns about the aspartame? Am I just overreacting?

InactiveThe amount of aspartame is very little… I didn’t do artifical sweeteners when I was prego or bf but we love the solutabs. Also the amount that is needed to do harm is so large that I personally think it is almost impossible to do harm from the small amount in the meds.

InactiveThe Prevacid didn’t work for us. DS3 is on Prilosec 15mg twice a day. The script we have is for generic prilosec (omeprazole). Omeprazole does NOT come in 15mg, so, I get the generic omeprazole that has 18 beads in it (for 20mg). I take out 4 beads and put the rest on a spoonfull of rice cereal. DS3 does not tolerate applesauce, etc., so rice cereal it is for us and it works like a charm. One time I went to pick up our script and it was a different generic (as pharmacies can do). I got home and it was like sawdust inside. I called and they said they would order the Omeprazole from the old generic company for us – so they do! If you go this route, I can ask our pharmacy which company they order from and see if your pharmacy would do the same for you. Of course, you will have to get your doc on board. Taking the beads out is not really difficult – dividing that sawdust would be, though.

InactiveI have to say that the prilosec beads taste TERRIBLE… very bitter (the coating, I mean). I actually needed a chaser after tasting them! So I commend any little ones who will take them. Since you were already using prilosec and are reluctant to change anyhow, I would suggest trying zegerid. It’s essentially a properly made prilosec suspension, so you don’t have to worry about the stability. We were one of the bunch who had better luck with prevacid, but it really depends on the baby. A lot of babes on this site have done great with zegerid (we never tried it as you can’t get it in Canada).

InactiveThank you all for your replies. THe doctor called the pharmacy, and she said three pharmacists said they would NOT recommend that anyone split up the beads from the capsules. The whole thing is ridiculous, but I wasn’t going to argue at that point. So we got the solutabs. But last night he would NOT go to sleep, and he usually goes to bed very peacefully (naps are a different story!), so it was very obvious that his belly hurt, so now I have concerns about the solutabs. This is neverending!
But…I have suspicions that his (silent) reflux may be getting better, so I’ll take this opportunity to start trying to wean. We’ll see what happens. We’re getting ready for a trip this weekend, so I can’t wait too long to see if his belly will tolerate the solutabs any better. I’ll give it one or two more days, then I’m going back to the compounded prilosec…which I HATE! 🙂 But it works, for awhile, so I guess that’s better than nothing! Thanks again everyone!
