I was hoping to hear from Anne, Karen and Becky as well as any others who have tried probiotics for their MSPI or cow milk intolerant children. I am not really sure about whether you go with the enzymes or the probiotics. There are tons of types but it seems Walgreen’s Natrol is milk free and most reasonably priced-anyone have anything better to recommend? Does this stuff really work? Jameson is now nearly 2 yrs. and we are still dealing with allergic skin reactions, an increasing sensitivity to soy milk which the GI put him on at his 13 mo. check up, his molars are coming in and this has reflux at an all time high, and his bowel movements still look mushy like a baby’s. He is so unstable gastrically speaking that I couldn’t dream to potty train him any time soon. I am also thinking of taking these myself (I am 9 mos. pregnant with #2) to ensure a healthy digestive tract for the next one since I’ve taken a few antibiotics this pregnancy. Any feedback from moms on this? Guys please help-this is the only place I can get straight answers! Thanks!

result. She went from terribly constipated to having two normal poos
this week – huge for her! They really can be helpful for helping heal
the intestines and digestive tract. We use the Baby Jarodophilus brand,
which is dairy free, and are very happy with it.Instead of starting on 1/4 tsp/day like they recommend, we are doing a
bit less for the first week, about 1/6 tsp and increasing next week.Good luck and good luck with the pregnancy as well!

We recently did a complete stool work up (celiac, parasites, viruses, others) and everything came back negative. Her diagnosis is toddler diarrhea. We tried multiple food eliminations (dairy, soy, etc) and nothing made her stools firmer. I also tried a probiotic, I think the same one that you mentioned. I got it at Walgreen’s too and it’s completely free of dairy and everything. It also produced no change in her stools. Still the same mushy poo as always. I think it’s worth a shot though. Another thing her Ped GI suggested was to keep her on Citrucel which bulks up the stools. We did it for awhile but I didn’t notice too much of a difference.

March 8, 2006 at 5:02 pm #3313AnonymousInactiveI have nothing to report to our little addition of probiotics…We got the Natrol brand from Walgreen’s and I am wondering how it can be good since it wasn’t refrigerated at the store. I see no improvement in his BM’s and I am thinking about going to the health food store for the one with bifidus in it. I read that it may be better for kids with reflux issues. I’ll update this thread when I see results. 😉
March 8, 2006 at 8:25 pm #3333AnonymousInactiveI would definitely get your probiotics from a health food store. Typically they are more expensive, but you are sure to get a higher quality product. The brands in health food stores generally have higher amounts as well as a wide spectrum of organisms. I use the same brand as Karen and have had good results. Its called Baby’s Jarro-Dophilus. It contains Bifidus breve, bifidus lactis, bifidus longum, bifidum, and Lactobacillius casei and rhamnosus for a total of 3 billion organisms per serving. It is formulated in concentrations specifically for babies. It is also non dairy and hypoallergenic.
March 8, 2006 at 10:22 pm #3350AnonymousInactiveWe just were able to get aloe vera and a kids version of the bifidus strain from a local health food store this afternoon. I think the Walgreen’s brand is dead!!! What a rip off! The woman who ran the store said aloe really heals up their throats and also said c section babies don’t get acidolpholis (spelling?) because they don’t travel through the birth canal. She also said babies with this problem need to lay off sugar and guessed he craves grapes and bananas. She told us she’d been studying this for about 25 years. Of course alternative medicine is out there but with the results I’ve gotten from traditional med, I am ready to listen to another opinion. Thanks for the tip. I will let you all know how he does after a few days. Hopefully, I’ll have something good to report! 😉
March 14, 2006 at 12:57 pm #3805AnonymousInactiveOkay, just an update on this thread-Flora 4 kids from the health store with bifidus and many other strains in applesauce once a day 1/4 tsp for his age-very effective. Stools are formed now and regular. I am also taking them myself based on her advice and also on a published study citing less likely allergies and eczema in future babies when taken during pregnancy. I’ve had to take antibitoics for 3 annoying things this pregnancy which is known to heighten this problem. Thanks for the advice everyone. 😉
March 14, 2006 at 1:00 pm #3808AnonymousInactiveCongratulations, Amanda! I assume “sweet Pea” is the new addition!
How are you feeling?
March 14, 2006 at 1:03 pm #3810AnonymousInactiveOh about 3 weeks away from a c section!!! No really, I am getting along fine. Jameson has hit his terrible 2’s so I’m working my best mama mojo these days. Thanks for asking about me! I am hoping baby #2 will be much easier but we all know how that goes! 😉
March 14, 2006 at 1:15 pm #3813AnonymousInactiveI hope you are wrong and #2 is a gem! I am sort of banking on it!!!
Good luck at the c-section. We will be scheduled as well.
The 2’s can be tough, but so much better than the screaming infant stage!
March 14, 2006 at 6:14 pm #3843AnonymousInactiveahhhh, the power of positive thinking!
I’ll be crossing my fingers we don’t hear about your little one until June!!! Best of luck! 😉
