Inactivehello, My son is eleven months old and was diagnosed with reflux at two months. He has been on every type of formula there is, First soy, allimentum, neocate, simalac, enfamil and most recent enfamil ar. He has also been on pepcid and then prevacid. they didn’t seem to make much a difference. He is a happy spitter. He spits up after almost every bottle. About two tablespoons. He has done the best with enfamil ar. dr said to start whole milk gradually. Since I’ve started giving it to him he spits up more frequenly. Has any one had this problem?

Inactiveif your son is a happy spitter why was he put on acid reducing medications, just curious? pepcid and prevacid are for babies with reflux who are in pain and whose esophogus is being damaged from acid coming up.
maybe he isnt quite ready for whole milk?January 11, 2007 at 1:09 pm #22136Anonymous
InactiveI think considering the problems he’s had that I would stick with what’s working best and put off whole milk until his spitting subsides. There’s really no reason to rush babies onto whole milk at a year, although it does seems doctors are pushing it lately.
I didn’t start my first two on whole milk until they were 15 months old and then I did it gradually so they were probably close to 17 months before they were on whole milk exclusively. And Myles just started whole milk at about 14 months but I still give him Good Start formula at bedtime.

InactiveMy son is 13 months old, and I can’t get him to drink any milk at all, not even chocolate or strawberry. So I supplement with a lot of whole milk cheese and yogurt, and I put mik in his oatmeal and grits (we’re southerners we love our grits-lol). My older son never drank whole milk, he just didn’t like it. Even if I put an ounce of milk in Aidan’s bottle he wouldn’t drink it. He’s off formula completely now, and doesn’t drink any milk, but I’m not worried about it. I doubt he’ll ever really drink a lot of milk, My older one still doesn’t. I just don’t think it’s that big of a deal!! Aidan’s ped didn’t even mention it, I think they are one of the rare offices that also doesn’t think it’s a huge deal if the child absolutely won’t drink milk.

InactiveHe has not always been a happy spitter. He used to spit up alot more than he does now. The spit up just stopped bothering him. It is very stressful to have a baby with reflux. I CAN’T GO BACK TO WORK BECAUSE NO one will watch him. He wants mommy all the time. wic will not cover enfamil ar. I can’t afford it. He has a hard time with rice cereal in his bottle. THANKS

InactiveYes, it is very stressful to have a reflux baby. I’ve had two of them and it was so stressful each time.

Maybe you could try regular enfamil formula with oatmeal cereal instead of rice. Many of us have found rice cereal to be too binding and gassy for our babies, and oatmeal to be better. Did you try enfamil alone or with rice before? Does WIC cover regular enfamil?

i think you are wrong about that. WIC will cover anything as long as you get an RX. i get neocate from WIC, and that stuff is $31 a can, which goes in 2-3 days. as of right now they are giving me about $250 a month worth of formula and my doctor is working on another 8 cans for me so it will be double that if they approve it.

InactiveI will try enfamil with oat meal. i brought a rx to wic and they told me NO. they have a new contract that only covers similac/isomil. ross. I used to get neocate from them when my son needed it. they were mad at me for putting rice cereal in his bottle. they said that was wrong. they must not know about babies with reflux. i wanted to cry last time i left there. they were so rude. also he wasn’t always a happy spitter. His reflux has improved alot since he learned to sit up and started eating solid foods. With less spit up he isn’t in any pain. He used to cry alot. He will be one febuary 24 and is starting to walk I hope then he might outgrow reflux. thanks,Amanda amandat2007-1-12 23:4:23
