Hi Joel

I just wanted to verify something and ask a question

If I switch my dd from compounded prilosec to zegerid, should there be

any lag time as far as the zegerid kicking in?

She is 22 pounds and on 20mg total of prilosec, 10mg am/pm and

pepcid before bed

Because I had troubles in the past giving her the zegerid because of the

flavor, I was going to TRY to give her the full 20mg in the am and pepcid

before bed

Just wanted to confirm I could take a 20mg pack of zegerid and add it to

her am bottle

I was thinking of mixing the zegerid at first only with an ounce of

formula, just to make sure she gets it all…does the amount matter??

Also, maybe you could shed some light on something I am curious about

When I switched my daughter from prevacid to prilosec it took about 10

-14 days to kick in

Also, when I switched my ds’s PPI we had a wait period

Both were on PPI’s for a while, why when switching PPI’s if there wait time

for the new med to kick in

I thought when starting a PPI it took some time for the med to work

because even though it started working right away, the prior damage that

might have been done needed to heal?

1. No, there should not be any lag between the two.

2. I’m not quite clear on how you are planning on mixing up the Zegerid. I would mix up each packet to a 2mg/mL concentration so that you know how much to mix in with the formula. If you don’t think she’ll finish the bottle, then you should put it in an amount that you think she would actually take. If you are going to give the whole packet in one dose, then it’s fine to mix it directly with the formula without adding water, if you think she’ll take it that way.

3. It’s hard to say why it took a while for the new PPI to start working, and I’m not the best person to answer that question. I do know that when a child receives a PPI according to Dr Phillips’ dosing recommendations, they usually turn around in less than a week. But again, it’s hard to say in your case, given all the variables. Dr Phillips might be able to answer that question better.
