InactiveHello ladies,
I don’t know what I would do without all of you! My little guy is almost 5 months old with quite bad reflux (would not breastfeed, had a feeding aversion, lost weight for the first month, constant screaming etc). He is now on a higher dose of a PPI administered through buffer babies and is doing much better, although he still has some issues. I pump and give him breastmilk so he does not have anything but my milk. I have also gone off milk and soy with a few slip ups over Christmas. Everytime I have dairy it seems to impact my baby so I think he does have a MSPI. If Ronan does have a MSPI why would he continue to reflux when I have taken it out of my diet? Does he still need his meds if he has MSPI? I read the info Hellbent gave me re intolerances (thanks!), but I am still a bit confused. In the books about reflux that I have read there is only discussion about MSPI and not intolerances to other foods when you are breastfeeding, but it seems on this site there are many children with intolerances to other foods that impact their reflux. Thanks!RachelJanuary 11, 2009 at 11:25 pm #60248Anonymous
InactiveHi Rachel–Ronan may be reacting to other foods in your diet. How long have you been off of dairy? Sometimes it can take a long time for all of the offending proteins to get out of your system and his. I would recommend trying the Total Elimination Diet. There is a lot of info. on this forum about it. It will save you time to do it that way….
Also–10 mg per day of omneprazole may not be enough. Check out the Marci-kids dosing info. (marci-kids.com). oh–I see you’re using BBabies…so you probably know about the dosing…but 10 mg/day is quite low. Have you looked at the ‘stickies’ under the ‘introduce yourself’ section? Laura has posted a lot of info there on medicines.
Hang in there Rachel!January 12, 2009 at 9:45 am #60258Anonymous
InactiveThanks so much for responding. I will look into the TED. I have been off dairy for around a month, but I had some slip ups during Christmas. I need to change my signature since Ronan is now getting 20 mgs.

InactiveHi there,
Yes, your baby can have reflux and MSPI and can exhibit symptoms even while on meds and while you are on a special diet. Slip ups can really effect things with food intolerances, although a one time thing shouldn’t have a long term effect. i would check like Colleen suggested to make sure his ppi dose is truly high enough, and then address removing all dairy and soy. These are the most common offending foods. Have you taken all dairy out, even the “hidden” dairy where it’s an ingredient in foods? The TED diet is another good idea, as he might be reacting to more than just dairy and soy. My son had reflux and also food intolerances and if I didn’t treat BOTH things, he was falling apart. Now my infant daughter also reacts to dairy and needs to be on meds, so you really often need to treat both elements. Also, sometimes it takes children a while to clear their systems of offending proteins. Good luck with all of this….i hope things improve soon!

InactiveThanks so much for your advice. That makes sense. Yes, I have taken all hidden dairy and soy out so I hope that helps but the other day when he was really fussy I was changing his diaper and noticed he had a red ring on his bum. I see the pediatrician on the 21st so I hope I get some answers then.

InactiveI think most of the others (sorry I’m so late to this post) have answered your questions, but I will chime in.
My ds Evan has many many intolerances & they all affect his reflux. Some of them seem very harmless too… rice, turkey, cinammon, etc. (& then the biggies like milk, soy, wheat, etc) BUT they all cause mucousy diapers & an increase in reflux pain.
I will say though that this is fairly uncommon though that only 1 (intolerance or reflux) needs to be treated & in most cases they both need to be addressed.
I would definitely consider TED in your case, but also remember that it can take some time for all of the offending proteins to exit yours & his system.
I’m sorry if this doesn’t make sense… I’m in a bit of a hurry.
Oh, also – about the red ring – that’s always a big red flag for my ds that he’s had (through my milk) an intolerance.

InactiveThanks Erin,
I noticed mucous in his diaper again today. Sigh, time for the TED.January 14, 2009 at 3:05 pm #60323Anonymous
InactiveIt will be okay ;). Just make sure you have plenty of food readily available & plan your meals, etc so you’re never starving & tempted to give in.
PM me if you need support or more ideas of some convenience TED foods 🙂
