Aidan slept in his crib for the first time last night, it’s elevated by putting one end on the lowest rung and the other on the highest. He slept great from about 8-1:40, then woke up fussing, and I would have been fussing too, he has managed to roll/slide down the crib and was smashed up against the right side on the bottom (not in anyway that would be dangeros to him, just super uncomfortable. The ? is, if I can get him to sleep in his crib when is level, is that ok? I mean are the cribs raised for any medical reason? (prior to this he slept on an AR pillow, which has velcro straps to keep him from sliding, and he has grown out of it) I mean he hangs out fine on his back for a while before he decides he wants to sit up (which is funny to watch he thinks he can just sit up from laying down on his back, and all he ends up doing are what looks like baby tummy crunches) I can hear him refluxing at night, but it doesn’t seem to bother him, he wakes up if he’s either hungry of is in a weird position (he used to fall to the side of the AR pillow SUPER uncomfy)..just wondering if it’s safe to put a silent refluxer to sleep in a level crib (I will not put him on his tummy, I think the risk is to great, and he hates being on his tummy anyway)..also, not buying that tucker sling thing, I’m trying to get him to learn how to sleep like a normal baby!!!

Also, it may be too high with one end in the top and the other end in the bottom.
I have Myles elevated by putting a really thick folded up blanked under his crib mattress at the head of his crib. It works great. He is elevated enough to relieve his reflux but not enough to slide or roll down. I did the same thing for Ellie and it worked fine. (I think I used books for her though).
Just make sure that whatever you use to elevate the head of the mattress is wide enough to go completely across the crib’s width. I didn’t do this the first time and when Myles rolled over to the side of his bed the mattress sagged down where he way laying and he was probably not very comfortable.
I didn’t lay Ellie flat until she had outgrown her reflux, and Myles is still elevated, but not a whole lot. Maybe try a slight elevation for a few nights and see how that goes.
How’s he doing these days?
May 15, 2006 at 3:15 pm #8087AnonymousInactiveahh ok good idea on the blanket, I’ll do that tonight after I get the bed raised up and normal (I never thought about the weight of the elevation bending the screws, that’s a GOOD point). He’s doing better, he has eaten sweet potatos yesterday and today, nothing out of the ordinary yet, very light rashish looking thing around his mouth but he got that even before solids (drool). I think the arching I saw was really him just learning how to do that, b/c now that his meds are up again and i KNOW he’s not in pain, he has figured out if he arches his back it makes it harder to put him in his carseat (aparently he is getting into the “hate the car seat” stage)But he seems to be better than after I cut his meds in half, although like I said I can hear him reflux, it doesn’t bother him (I assume). How’s myles? I knwo yu were having bottle and puking issues!!! I hope he’s getting better! funny thing about Aidan waking up last night in the crib, the monitor I had was aparently dead so I didn’t get to him in time to put him back to sleep quickly. My husband was staying over (we are seperated but working thigns out) and I asked him to hold Aidan while I went downstairs and made a bottle. Aidan was SCREAMING and I mean really going at it (it was 2 in the morning) I figureg I’d give the hubby a taste of what it’s like to handle a screaming child at 2, so I took my sweet time making the bottle, went on the computer took a look at the new posts..etc..etc.The moment I walked upstairs and took Aidan from him, Aidan shut right up and went to sleep. This morning when he called me from work he said “man I’m really tired, I don’t know how you do that” I just wanted to say DUH he doesn’t scream when I hold him at night. (Aidan will only tolerate my husband holding/playing with him for about 30-35 mins before he starts wailing), anyway long story, nothing to do with reflux, but it cracked me up and I still giggle when I think of the confused look on his face as he was holding Aidan and had no idea how to get him to calm down!!
May 15, 2006 at 3:18 pm #8088AnonymousInactiveI use crip shoes to elevate the crib. I bought them many years back and havent seen them in stores lately, so I’m not sure if they still make them. You could probably find them online though. They do work great and it allows the bed to be elevated without having to worry about sticking stuff under the mattress.
May 15, 2006 at 3:49 pm #8091AnonymousInactiveLisa, I saw something like that once too. I think they were called crib blocks. I found them on line when I was pregnant with my first, but never thought I’d need them. I could never find them again after having my first reflux baby and needing them.
Jill, You and I must think alike. I thought it was such a brilliant idea to elevate the crib the way you are doing it. It’s a good thing my father-in-law was here. So, men are good for some things!
Myles is the same with his daddy. Daddy’s great fun but when he needs something he wants his mommy. And my dh has no idea what it’s like to be up at night with a baby either. He always tells me “yeah, I was up too, and I’m tired, too. I heard it all.” HEARD it all! Give me a break! At least your dh acknowledged to you how hard it is. My dh thinks it’s no big deal because he’s laying there in bed and he HEARS it all, and he’s tired, too.
Anyway, I’m glad to hear Aidan is doing better and eating some solids again. Myles is doing better, too. He’s not puking as much (only once Sat and once Sun, none yet today) but he still doesn’t want his bottle. I’m debating whether I should call the doctor or just ditch the bottle and spoon feed him if that’s what he wants.
I hope you get the crib thing worked out, and I’m glad Aidan is sleeping in his bed. Maybe he’ll sleep better tonight if he doesn’t roll to the foot of the crib and find himself stuck in the corner!
May 15, 2006 at 3:51 pm #8092AnonymousInactiveI went to bed bath and beyond and bought a wedge that is about a 20 degree angle and popped it under the mattress. I was thinking about this issue like you, but i think i need to wait until she is 1 year before trying something new. We still use a sling, (danny sling) that ties to the crib. I’m afraid to take her out of it with the mattress elevated because she is crawling and will pop out of the crib one day!
May 15, 2006 at 3:54 pm #8093AnonymousInactiveOhh, i forgot! I was thinking about buying one of those ar pillows because we are going to travel soon and I though we could pop it in the middle of the bed with us, but you said he doesn’t fit in it already? The picture on the website only showed a baby sitting on the floor with it feeding himself. Anyways, she is a tummy sleeper, so I was just wonderin if that is how you used it and if you think a bigger size would work. Thanks!
May 15, 2006 at 6:21 pm #8105AnonymousInactivewell, he still fits in it per say but his legs are so flipping big that the strap you pull up between them and velcro to the sides is too tight on him!!!! I don’t think you can use it for tummy sleepers I think it was designed for back, but give the number on the site a call, the woman who makes them is awesome at answereing any ?’s.
May 15, 2006 at 9:30 pm #8113AnonymousInactiveSarah, have you seen the ones from pediacraft? I’ve never used them personally, but I think it would work much like a dani sling and would be portable as well. They go up to quite big sizes, and I think they might even be covered by some insurance companies. The website is http://www.pediacraft.com .
May 15, 2006 at 9:34 pm #8114AnonymousInactiveSarah, I just checked out the website, and for some reason they seem to have changed the info written on it. It used to outline the prices and also the sizes for the wedge/sling but that info is now gone. I do recall reading that they accomodated up to quite large sized toddlers but can’t remember the details. I just remember one mom someone talking about using the wedge. Have a good trip.
May 15, 2006 at 11:19 pm #8118AnonymousInactiveThanks ladies, Jill, sorry… didn’t mean to hijack the post. Great ideas, just have to find what works for each baby. Here’s to having our babies sleep like normal little ones some day!!!
May 28, 2006 at 8:53 pm #8714AnonymousInactiveok, I finally have Aidan’s crib elevated to a point that he’s comfy yet not rolling to the bottom and waking up with his little face against the bars!!!(used the blanket under the head of the mattress thing) He has been sleeping in there for a while now, and sleeps clear through the night, sometimes wakes up at 4ish to eat but it’s more likely for him to sleep til 6. He has one of those ocean aquarium things in there, and for a few nights in a row the stupid thing kept going off (and as we all know it plays for a good long time) again and again. I figured he was streaching and accidentally hitting the button….not so much, one night I went in there and saw him rolled over to the side punching the button that turns it on over and over-LOL needless to say it is now in the “motion only” position. I think he actually likes having his own little place to sleep. Kind of weirds me out as I never put my first in his crib. I was all prepared for Aidan to hate the crib b/c I just figured they all did!!!
May 29, 2006 at 9:48 am #8723AnonymousInactiveHow cute and funny. It sure is wonderful when they like their beds. My three all were very comfortable in their cribs and that sure makes life easier for mom. Myles often wakes up at night and talks to himself very happily in his crib for a while and then goes back to sleep. Or he pulls on the feet of his pajamas, playing tug of war with them until he realizes how tired he is and he drifts back off to sleep. Eliana used to wake up and sit in the corner of her crib and stare into space for what seemed like an eternity before flopping over and going back to sleep. I used to wonder what in the world she could be thinking about sitting up in the corner of her crib like that.
I’m glad the blanket under the mattress is working well for Aidan and that’s great news that he is sleeping so well.
