How much rice cereal do you put in a 5-6oz bottle? My daughter has always been on highly concentrated formula because she was a preemie. For that, I used about 2-3 tsp cereal to thicken. She just recently switched to regular formula which is much thinner, and I’m having a hard time finding the right balance of thickness. My ped said 1 TB for 4 oz. I use the Dr. Brown’s y-cut nipple and it seems like the formula is coming out too fast for her. Just wondered what ratio others use.
We used to use 1 tbsp rice cereal for every 2 ounces formula. And we
put it in the blender with the formula and water and blended it all up
and just used a #2 DB nipple. Worked well but was very constipating…
We used 1 Tbsp of rice per oz of formula. It looked like sludge, but it worked for her. Anything else and we had major spitting issues. Well, actually, we had major spitting issues no matter what, but that mix of rice to formula was the only way that she kept anything down. We ended up switching to oatmeal because of constipation.
We use 1 tsp per 2 ounces of formla….probably a bit on the low side. We do it more to prevent choking on thin formula than to prevent reflux. It is definitely trial and error to get it right in terms of flow and thickness. We also use a DB level 2 nipple. We tried the Y cut ones but found that no matter what the thickness, it was just way to fast for my daughter. But she also seemed to have choking issues.
A lot depends on the baby when it comes to the type of nipple. Kaelyn choked when we used the Y-cut nipple even though her formula was incredibly thick because she had such a strong suck.
