InactiveKierra-
I’m sorry that your going through the teething and reflux roller coaster too- and so young! I remember everyone telling me I was nuts for thinking it was teething. Now when I tell people that he already has two teeth they don’t believe and I have to show them
.I’ve tried the combo of Zantac and previcid- but my son hates the taste of the zantac, spitting out almost all of it every time- mylanta seems more effective (sometimes I put it in his bottle).
I give the previcid to him by holding the solutab in his cheek until it dissolves and then giving him a little water to wash it down. He seems to like the taste and process as it only takes about a minute.

InactiveHi there,
We’ve also been tortured by teething…our ped gi and ped have confirmed over and over (my dh keeps asking me to make sure they think it’s “just teething”) –that teething is the root cause, but it makes their reflux 10 times worse. They feel the main source of pain in the end is the increased reflux. I have taken my son to the ped several times wondering if it’s really an ear infection, some other infection, and once while on vacation ended up in the ER cause he seemed so inconsolable that we were sure there was something terribly wrong. EVERY time it’s been….well, his ears are fine, his lungs are fine, the blood tests are fine….it must be something viral….(OR TEETHING). My ped and ped gi have okay’d the use of: Children’s Motrin or Children’s Motrin Cold (which has decongestant, thinking we’ll dry things up a bit), along with Children’s Benadryl, along with Hyland’s teething tablets, and then I also use Hyland’s teething gel which is great. LIke the other mom, I also use 10-12 hyland’s tablets at once, but my guy is 18 mos old. When he was 12 mos I was using 6 tablets, but Laura (hellbennt) mentioned she was using 10 tablets by the time her son was 12 mos. We do this ROUND THE CLOCK when things are bad. Lucas once quit eating for 8 days STRAIGHT….only bfed and was miserable with teething. He was 15 mos old at the time and on a mostly solids diet. Night wakings are from he** during this time and he wants to bfeed night and day. Just want to let you know you aren’t alone. Do whatever you can to get some rest and keep them comfortable.

InactiveHi,
This morning I thought I would take my chances and up his dose of previcid to 15mg in the AM, regular ped. said he could handle it- but to talk with ped GI too. I am still waiting to hear back from the GI. But anyway- he had a great day, other than the pain experienced when he was having his first bottle (much like when he first started the med about 3 or 4 weeks ago)- then it passed and he (we) had a great day- 3 great naps totaling about 4 hours, actually took his bottles- still not great, but much better and he was happy and only one tiny spit up for the entire day! He’s been sleeping peacefully so far tonight too- although the nasty wakenings usually start around midnight! I also gave him tylenol once and hylands a few times- I give 3 or 4 as he is just about 6 months. I’m feeling guardedly optimistic… and now am very curious to talk to the ped GI. I’m going to keep up on all of this unless the GI gives me a really good reason not to.

InactiveI have heard of mothers upping the dosage just during the teething and then going back to the original dose when the teething passes. Our ped gi said that this is also sometimes done. We were always at the highest end of the meds dosage and couldn’t really go any higher, so it didn’t work out for us to do that. Keep up the detective work! I’m glad to hear it was such a great day.

InactiveUpdate:
I finally talked to the nurse at the GI spec.- they said to do 15 mg of previcid in the AM and Zantac at night. This is so frustrating- we’ve already tried Zantac at night- it didn’t touch the reflux, I’ve even tried Previcid with Zantac in the middle of the day when he did 7.5mg in the AM and PM. I told her that I needed to have an appt. with the Spec.- that he has just had the best three days of his life and I’m not willing to step his medication down for a five day trial of Zantac when we already know it doesn’t work for him- not to mention that he has mastered spitting it out because he hates so much and builds up a tolerance in a few days! Tommy has his 6 month appt. with the reg. ped. on Monday so I’ll talk to her about all of this as she has already asked if she can write the script for it and was the one to recommend an increase or new medication. Insurance has confirmed that she can write the script too.
So frustrating- after months of horrible feedings, no sleeping- we finally get the diagnosis, then struggle through the right medication/dose and it seems to be clicking- even with the teething and now this.
A few months ago I had made an appt. with another GI spec. and then got into this one sooner and kept meaning to cancel the original appt. – I’m glad I never got around to cancelling because if I need to go to them I’ve got the appt. in a few weeks.

InactiveSorry things are so frustrating. I thought of something else, Dr. PHillips with the MARCI-kids institute sometimes recommends giving prevacid or other ppi meds spread out in three doses throughout the day instead of two. The little babies metabolize the stuff so quickly. You might think of taking the overall 24 hour dose and dividing it into three and giving it in the am, mid afternoon and before bed.
I’ve had so many people not believe me when I discuss the difficulties we’ve had with teething….it’s because if they don’t have a refluxer they just CAN’T IMAGINE what you are describing. Even my dh asked me repeatedly EVERY time (until we ahd gone through this about five times) ” what do you think this is?” It’s really maddening. Just chat with the other reflux mothers and you’ll be sure that once they are okayed for not having an ear infection, no fever, nothing in the chest and nothing else apparently wrong and they are eating their hands….you’ll know that you have a refluxer going through classic teething. I hope it eases off soon!

InactiveThanks! The nurse at the GI spec. ended up calling tonight to apologize and explain what her asst. was saying (I know what she was saying- I just didn’t agree with it). We agreed to keep him on the 22.5 mg a day for now, even though she said this was a really high dose. She still wanted to do Zantac and then increase the Zantac if needed… I told her that I didn’t want that- we haven’t had good luck with that and frankly he shouldn’t have to go back to being in pain when this is working! I did say that after teething was done I would consider lowering his dose… then she said that this dose was probably right for him even after teething.
..anyway- glad that we got this resolved for now! Joel had mentioned the three doses a day too. I’ve been trying to sort out when I could do a mid-day dose with the timing of naps and feedings (I’m still getting used to bottles and solids and timing with naps). I’ll try it tomorrow though because his afternoons have degraded a bit and I was wondering if it was dosing or maybe motrin, although the motrin doesn’t bother him at night.

InactiveJust thought I would mention that Zegerid does not need to be timed with feeding at all….it’s really worth looking into if the scheduling of meds is throwing you for a loop. It was so much easier for us after switching to zegerid because we didn’t have to worry about the whole food and timing factor. If your insurance covers it and you are up for a change, it was really a wonderful change for us. I can’t say enough good things about it.

InactiveHi,
I’ll mention this to my ped and see what she thinks- as I’m waiting for the appt. with the new GI because I’m ‘done’ with the current GI spec- they still want us to use Zantac so I doubt Zegerid would be approved. Tommy is doing great now with Prevecid in the AM, afternoon and before bed too.- just the timing thing is so hard- not worrying about that would be great for me! He just had his 6 month shots so he’s a little off, but hoping today we’ll be back on track with eating!
Thanks,
