InactiveIn general, is reflux supposed to get better or worse with solids??? It seems I’ve heard both and I’m confused. I was looking for hope that DD’s spit up would lessen once I start her on solids. I can’t fathom having huge colored stains on everything! As it stands right now at least the stains don’t show. She’s been getting cereal in her bottles for a while now and I’ve just started trying to spoon feed her a tbsp of cereal before bed. In a few weeks I will introduce baby food. I’m looking for spit-up hope…you know…heavier food+gravity=less laundry? Something like that? Maybe???

InactiveSolids made no difference with Myles. He spit them up just as much.
All babies are different, though. It’s really just trial and error. She’s pretty young, so I wouldn’t rush it.

InactiveI think the reason you’ve heard it both ways is because it has a different affect on each child. Some babies benefit from the extra weight in their tummies. I think other’s digestive systems just aren’t mature enough for solids & it makes it worse. I remember my little brother used to have horrible reflux & would projectile vomit all the time. As soon as my mom started him on cereal, he quit completely…..BUT it didn’t work for my son.
So I guess all you can do is try. Also, I think by the time most babies start solids, they can sit up and are upright more often which helps keep things down too. It might be better to wait until at least six months to start solids, but it all depends on what you feel is best for your baby & how she tolerates it.October 14, 2006 at 10:04 am #15694Anonymous

I think his spit up has decreased, but it also has really been trial and error w/ solids. So many of these GERDlings have really immature digestive systems, Hunter included, and we are going REALLY slowly with each introduction. For example, when I gave him green beans, it took me back to the days when he would cry ALL DAY LONG. He has done really well with bananas this week, and now I am stressing about what to introduce today. I can tell you he really couldn’t tolerate much more than his usual oatmeal in the bottle, until just a couple of weeks ago (he just turned 6 months).
So, as far as the spit up, yes it decreased. Now, as far as the fussiness, it’s been hit or miss, depending on the solid.
You made me LOL at the dream of doing less laundry….
, I had asked my husband the same thing when we started solids.Someday…..Someday……Dreams of us all not having to change clothes 3X’s a day.

InactiveThanks! I don’t feel I am rushing things. She has tolerated the rice cereal beautifully! Her pedi is the one who recommended it as well. She has never had tummy issues (gas, constipation, tummy aches, etc…). She just has reflux, well treated for pain with her Zantac. She’s just a big-time spitter.
I do plan on taking my time introducing new things.Looks like I will have to just wait and see how the spit up responds.

InactiveKaelyn’s spit up wasn’t affected by solids at all. She just kept right on spitting up huge amounts on a regular basis until she finally slowed down between 10 months and a year. I know that others have posted about it helping though, so it really does depend on the baby.
