Reflux problems only when sick

My son had bad reflux for first 15 months but now 2.5 yrs and doing great. However, whenever he gets bad cold or any other sickness the reflux seems to come back and he is in terrible pain, goes off his food etc. Given that its such a short period I don;t the Losec which worked previously will be any good. The main problem is that it impacts on his weight and his eating habits. He is already at the 0.5% weight for his size so anything that hits weight is not good.

Anyone else experience this recurrent reflux problem?

Also my son’s speech is still very slow, I think this may be reflux related but no doctors here in Ireland have heard of this link. Have you had this experience?

Sorry, I don’t really have any advice. My three yr. old seems to be having some problems with reflux as well. She had outgrown it at nine months, but lately she complains intermittently about a tummy ache, and/or throw up in her mouth, and she’s swallowing and coughing a little so I’m sure it’s reflux.

For now since it’s intermittent and not a daily problem I’m just giving her Tums or Mylanta Cherry Supreme when she complains, but if it continues or gets worse I will take her to the doctor because I’m afraid that if she’s refluxing regularily she may end up with some damage to her esophagus.

I haven’t heard of any relationship between speech delays and reflux. Has he been evaluated?

Hi,

Our pediatric gi specialist says that reflux definitely gets worse when they are sick. I took him in for a regular checkup and mentioned that I thought he was sick, but wasn’t sure if it was just the reflux being worse with maybe some teething, but yet it seemed like sickness yet no temp….the Doc said that if they get sick, the reflux gets worse, and if the reflux gets worse, it sometimes seems like they are sick. So it’s a circular sort of thing.

I don’t know a lot about speech delays, but have seen other moms post about this on this board I think. Maybe do a search to see if this topic has been discussed by other moms.

Seth is almost two and sometimes we think we are finally over the reflux but then it will flare up in a big way. It does usually seem to be when he is teething or sick. We’ve had a couple of bad nights recently and he is very congested. I think he is refluxing all of the drainage. So, I’d say there definitely is a correlation between the two!
