Hi, I’m mother to baby boy Zain who is 3.5months old, born on 21st May 2010.
He started off as a very keen feeder and has been breastfed since birth, but from 6-7 weeks onwards he has progressively become very difficult to feed. The only way to feed him now is when he is asleep in a darkened room with no noise. He is also completely averse to any feeding from bottle. Although no test for reflux has been conducted, our paeditrician believes he has silent reflux and prescribed Zain Domperidone and Raniditine two weeks ago. We found that Zain wasn’t getting any better so a week ago he switched the prescription of Ranitidine to Omeprazole. We’re still not finding any improvment and I’m beginning to wonder whether he does actually have reflux at all. As well as the feeding problems, Zain spits up a lot and more recently he has begun to have an episode in the evening during which he cries hysterically. I don’t know if this is linked but he has also begun to want to be held all the time, gets tired very quickly, cries a lot and refuses to play on his own anymore. However, he doesn’t seem to have any issues lying horizontal, even when he is upset and I’ve heard that resistance to lying flat is a key symptom of reflux. Has anyone had similar symptoms? Should I be pushing for a test for reflux? Any help would be much appreciated! x

The feeding got gradually harder until 8 weeks, when I couldn’t feed her at all, and then we got the silent reflux diagnosis. It sounds like you’re probably either in canada or UK, right? Both can be kind of old school in their approach for treating reflux. When feeding signs show up, it’s key to get the pain under control before they get worse. I also would NOT introduce solids until things are under control. Have you considered intolerances to things in your diet (Milk soy protein intolerance) and eliminated certain foods or done an elimination diet? I don’t know that any testing would help at this point. Just my opinion. He does sound like silent reflux, and my daughter could lie flat, except when she went to sleep, then she was awful. That doesn’t have to necessarily do with reflux. I would check out http://www.marci-kids.com for more details about meds etc. I would guess that your son’s dose of losec is much too low, and also that it’s either not being made or given correctly. Is it a compound (which are awful in my biased opinion), or the tablets, that need to be given on an empty stomach and followed up with a meal 30-60 minutes later. I would consider a good dose of prevacid in buffer babies- produced by marci-kids. The problem is that you may have a hard time getting someone to prescribe it for you. I’d also consider a ped GI if you haven’t already. For us, the feeding got so bad that I couldn’t feed her any other way and even that was a struggle. Hopefully you can avoid the same route. Good luck.
