InactiveHello everyone!
Ava (10 months now) has been on Zegerid for
the last 4 months and has been doing really well
! She takes 14mg – 3 times per
day. We use the 40mg packets mixed with 6.5-7ml of water to make a 4mg/ml
solution to which we add an equal part of Mylanta (I know at the dose she is
taking we could change the solution and do the 16.5ml of water since she is taking the min. 14mg/7ml but she takes it like a little bird this way so I figured
there wasn’t any reason to “fix it if it isn’t broke”!)Anyway, I’ve always just mixed up 2 packets of Zegerid in a
20ml syringe which I kept in the fridge and just squirted out the individual doses
in syringes. Well lately I got tired of mixing it up every 2 days and
thought I would get crafty and do a 5 day supply at one time (I got a 60ml syringe
from a local pharmacy). So then I thought I would get even craftier and get
enough syringes to last 5 days (15 individual syringes/doses) and have them
made up ahead of time! So I mixed it up and measured them all out! Well when I got her individual pre-measured syringe of Zegerid
out this morning (to add the Mylanta) it only measured 3.0mls?!?! But when I
put the freshly mixed (i.e. room temp.) batch of Zegerid in the individual syringes
they were EXACTLY 3.5ml! So I figure that because it’s cold it’s thickened up a
little bit BUT my main concern is that I have always measured it out COLD
when giving it to her before! So was I giving her too much before when I
measured it out cold? I’m just afraid that she is now getting a lower dose than
before and I’m afraid she’s going to rebound. I never really paid attention to
whether the meds lasted because we always ran a little short because of her
dose (a little more than 42mg per day). So how does everyone else mix it up? In
the future should I trust the room temp. dose or the refrigerated dose because
that is what she’s been getting for 4 months now? I know this is long but if anyone
has any advice I would be so appreciative! Thanks in advance!
All the best,

Aimee

Zegerid – 42mgs per day (14mgs 3 times per day)October 3, 2006 at 8:29 pm #14870Anonymous
Inactiveim not sure about the room temp stuff…sorry.
but i just want to let you know that trace is on 42 mg also-3.5 ml 3 times. dr phillips said that 3.5 ml is actually the minimum amount you can use without the mylanta. so you dont have to use mylanta if you are giving a minimum of 3.5 ml.
also, why do you say 6.5-7 ml of water? we just do the 6.5 ml.October 4, 2006 at 3:37 pm #14946Anonymous
InactiveI know we can give it to her without the Mylanta but she just hates the taste of the Zegerid by itself and Dr. Phillips said it wasn’t a problem to continue this way especially since she takes it so well! Also, the reason I say the 6.5-7ml is because those were actually Dr. Phillips instructions to me! See below!
“Mix up the 40mg with 6.5 to 7 mL tap water. This will make 10mL and will contain 40mg (4 mg/ml). Use 14mg (3.5mL) Add 3.5mL of Mylanta Supreme Cherry (see below) to each dose. Mix up in oral syringe. This will make 7 mL total. Most kids take this right down.”Aimee

InactiveI am so confused at this point. I was giving Justice 5 ml of Zegerid. I have no idea how many mg that is. He is also on the 40 mg pckts. Anyway, I e-mailed Dr. Phillips for suggestions and he told me to give Justice another 5 ml. I think he means 7 ml 2 times a day and 6 ml once a day. Anyway, I have no idea if I’m supposed to mix it the same as before. I keep e-mailing Dr. phillips, but am getting no response. I really miss Joel!!!!!!!!!!!!

Inactivejusticesmom, you always mix it the same. you mix a 40 mg pack with 6.5 ml of water. that makes 4mg/ML. (that means 4 mg per each Ml you put in the syringe. its pretty simple to figure out, and i suck at math lol.
so 3.5 ml 3 times a day is 42 mg, and i believe thats what you said Justice is on. 🙂October 7, 2006 at 3:44 pm #15132Anonymous
InactiveOkay, but Justice is taking 7 ml twice a day and 6 ml once a day. So that would be more like 50 something mgs right? Math is greek to me. Of course, I have forgotten what Dr. phillips had said about the 4 mg per each ml. Justice actually started out on 3 ml 3 x a day and Dr Phillips said that was 12 mg 3x a day. We then upped it to 4, then 5, now he is saying 7. Justice did great for 2 days and is now back to not sleeping well and had another tremor today. I don’t know what to do. His ped already said she doesn’t want to up his meds anymore. She said she would just like to see us use mylanta. Mylanta?! That doesn’t do much for him and never has.

Inactiveyeah we were on 3 ml 3 times a day which was 36 mg. now we are on 3.5 ML which is 42 mg-the MAX dose for him according to marci-kids.com
yeah if you are giving 7 ml and then 6 ml that is 52 mg a day. that is pretty high, and if you are not seeing improvement, it may not be his reflux that is the issue??

InactiveHe had improved for 2 days when I first increased the dose. Last night and today were horrible. Well his sleeping was horrible. He was a little fussier than normal and very clingy. Now I’m not sure if it might have been something I ate. Justice has a rash around his mouth today. The only thing out of the ordinary that I ate was tomatoes.
So, if I do see improvement on the increase I should keep him on it right? Why must reflux be so confusing? I don’t want to do anything to hurt him. I just want to make sure he is comfortable. My understanding is that you can’t overdose a ppi. It is really confusing because he is such a big baby, but man 52 mg sounds really high.
How is Trace doing?

InactiveShelby,
Tomatoes always bothered my babies. I hope he feels better soon.

Inactiveyeah i heard tomatoes can be not so good for reflux babies

you may have answered this before, but are you getting any testing done like EEG or sleep study?
thanks for asking-Trace is doing well. we have our first Gi appt on the 12th in downtown Chicago with a doctor who worked with Dr Phillips. Trace is doing well, but i would just like him to see a specialist just in case because he hasnt gotten to see one yet. im excited 🙂
i hope you figure things out with Justice soon, keep us updated.

InactiveGlad to hear it might be the tomatoes. I know they bother my reflux, but didn’t know how much if any got through the breast milk.
We are still scheduled for an eeg. If the sleeping doesn’t get any better I think I am going to request a sleep study. I have video of him waking, but my friend took our camera to load it to youtube and hasn’t done it yet.
I’m glad you are seeing a specialist. Let me know how it goes. Mine was horrible, but it sounds like yours will go well since the doc. knows and worked with Dr. Phillips.
