ok, Aidan is almost 5 months old (in 4 days) and has only rolled over 5 times in his crib which is elevated, But he rolled over from one side to another not down hill..does that count if he won’t roll over on the ground??? Every time he is put on his tummy, he is fine for about 3 mins before he spits up and screams and just gives up…..
May 1, 2006 at 2:07 pm #7308AnonymousInactiveI have a 4 month old who never liked to be on his tummy either. He liked for us to put him on a pillow and keep him elevated that way for tummy time. This also is what taught him to roll over. He did it on the pillow many times. So I thought that maybe if he wakes up from one of his naps early and is ready to get up, before his next bottle, I would try to put him flat on our bed on his tummy. He liked this better! With my help, I started trying to teach him to roll over like he used to on the pillow. And then one day he did it on his own and loves it. He will only get on his tummy before his bottles. He is fussy if I also try to do it after he has had his bottle. You may want to try that to see if he would like it that way. When my ds rolled over on the elevated pillow, I wrote it down in his baby book for his first roll. I do consider that a true roll over. Others may not, but it helps guide him and taught him how to do it level. Give it a try, it may work.
May 1, 2006 at 2:15 pm #7310AnonymousInactiveMyles is 7 months old and has only rolled over from tummy to back three times! Part of me is worried sick, but I also realize that part of the reason he is not rolling over more is that he is down right spoiled! I can’t stand to hear him cry and he always cries when he is on his tummy. So, mommy always comes to his rescue. I guess I’m a marshmellow with him because of his reflux. When he’s on his tummy and crying he is very likely to throw up, so I just pick him up.
I wouldn’t be too worried yet. Babies roll over much later now that they are back sleeping instead of tummy sleeping.
May 1, 2006 at 3:22 pm #7316AnonymousInactiveMy son rolled from his tummy to his back right a 4 months. A week later he started to roll from his back to his tummy. Now, whenever I put him on his back, he rolls right over on to his tummy. After a few minutes he gets made and kicks and cries but will not roll back over. He rolls onto his tummy in the crib and is happy to sleep that way. It made me nervous at first, but there is nothing I can do about it. He used to wake up and play in his crib for a while, but now he wakes up on his tummy and get mad and cries. He will not roll over to play with his crib toy. Hill will not roll from his tummy to back at all anymore. It drives me nuts cuz he did it fine for a week.
May 1, 2006 at 4:11 pm #7319AnonymousInactivehe’s pretty young still—-i wouldn’t be concerned.
May 1, 2006 at 4:28 pm #7320AnonymousInactive4 months is SO young… not sure who would tell you to worry at that age. I really do not think that Matthew really rolled over until he was well into his 7th month maybe? Now, he walks holding my hand and holding on to the stroller… so don’t owrry about it yet!
Christine – i guess Matthew is spoiled too… we spent so much time in spain with tons of people around him… but hey, he is really doing well at walking so no need to worry!
May 1, 2006 at 5:01 pm #7321AnonymousInactiveHailey still doesn’t roll. She certainly can, she’s done it a few times, used to do it lots (to get off her tummy) but not so much anymore.
May 1, 2006 at 5:30 pm #7327AnonymousInactiveThais, I don’t think Myles has ever cried for more than a minute at a time in his whole life….except maybe when he was circumcised. Poor baby. Mommy couldn’t help him then.
I say he’s spoiled and he is, but I don’t really mind. They’re only babies for a short time and then they grow up and you can’t get them to sit on your lap anymore because they want to go and do their own thing.
Besides, who could resist these little charmers that we have?
I’m only a little worried about his delays (he just finally started sitting alone!). I know that he will catch up once he discovers that there is more to life than being held and coddled by mommy.
Jill, I remember when I first started taking care of babies….a long time ago…before the back to sleep campaign (I’m a lot older than most moms on this site!), babies used to sleep on their tummies and they definitely learned to roll over much younger than today’s babies. It used to be common for babies to roll over by 4 months. Now it’s not as common that early. I think Liza was over 5 months when she started rolling over. Ellie was close to 6 months. Myles…who knows when he’ll do it?? Maybe when mommy decides it’s ok if he cries for more than a minute!!
May 1, 2006 at 9:59 pm #7352AnonymousInactiveJill,
I wouldn’t worry. I noticed both my boys with reflux were slow to roll, or barely rolled at all. They both skipped it and went to sitting. They both hated tummy time at that age, I guess it pushed stomach contents up unless they were elevated. I have learned not to sweat the milestones… just discuss your concerns with your ped. We do what we have to do to survive and protect our little ones. Take care.

May 2, 2006 at 9:19 am #7364AnonymousInactiveMy friend’s daughter still really doesn’t roll over at 7 months old. She thinks it is b/c she spoiled her daughter and held her all of the time. Oddly enough she can sit up on her own but still won’t roll over!
May 2, 2006 at 3:27 pm #7395AnonymousInactiveRolling over isn’t even considered a developmental milestone anymore, much like crawling. Many babies will do it, but lots won’t, especially if they weren’t put on their tummies a lot. Hailey sat well on her own by 6 months old, but still doesn’t really roll. My older daughter flipped over, but never rolled around like you see lots of babies do.
May 2, 2006 at 4:00 pm #7398AnonymousInactiveLori, where did you hear or read that rolling over isn’t considered a develomental milestone anymore? I’m just curious because I know lots of moms worry about it. I noticed that at Myles check-ups they haven’t asked about it.
May 2, 2006 at 4:41 pm #7401AnonymousInactiveMy ped told us that they don’t worry too much about rolling anymore. He said it’s good if they do it, but doesn’t mean anything if they don’t.
May 2, 2006 at 7:20 pm #7408AnonymousInactiveThanks, Lori. I was just wondering becuase I haven’t heard or read anthing about it lately. Of course, I don’t read much of anything anymore. The only thing I do when my kids are keeping each other occupied is nose around here and browse on ebay!
May 2, 2006 at 7:50 pm #7411AnonymousInactiveYep, I just came from my older son’s Ocupational therapist and was asking her about rolling over she said that it’s between 4-6ish months but that it’s really not that big of a deal..so I have 2 more months to try to get him to do it, but hearing her say that I feel much better. I also remembered that my first son rolled over once then refused to do it again. (I dug out his baby book)
