InactiveNot sure where to post this…How did you know that your child had seasonal allergies and what did you do about it?

InactiveThe baby that I sit for has seasonal allergies. His nose was a faucet from Feb (we had an early spring and things were blooming at the beginning of Feb!) until about 2 weeks ago when the tons of pollen went away! With him, it was obvious…itchy red eyes and like I said, constant runny nose and it never let up and he never ran a fever or anything.

InactiveKaelyn’s biggest issue with her seasonal allergies is her eyes. They are frequently red and itchy and she complains that they hurt. This year, she has complained a lot about her nose as well.

InactiveI’m pretty sure Ellie has seasonal allergies. Both dh and I do, so it’s not surprising. She sneezes alot, especially in the early am and she wakes at night with a stuffy nose. She complains that her nose itches and sometimes her eyes itch as well.
As for what to do, Ellie was prescribed Zyrtec last year. I think they have to be over two, though.

InactiveHmmm…Sarah has been sick so some of this might be from her current virus she’s getting over, but they spend a lot of time outside at daycare. When I came to pick her up today the sitter said she thought her ear infection might be back and her nose was running like a faucet. I was expecting the worst this evening but as soon as we got home and inside…her nose stopped running. Would it happen that fast? She wasn’t even irritable. Is that a coincidence? This has happened one other time. Sarah was also really flushed when I picked her up(red splotches and red cheeks…but it was really warm today…85 and sunny). How would I KNOW if it’s allergies? or if she’s just starting to get sick again?

InactiveWith Taylor we actually believe that her allergies could be causing so much drainage leading to ear infections for her. We have her on Zyrtec. I can hear her congestion when we are outside for extended periods of time, and also when I forget to give her, her medications.

InactiveAmy,
I have seasonal allergies and they get worse when I’m outside and improve pretty quickly once I’m back indoors, especially when the house is airconditioned. The minute I step outdoors in the morning the sneezing, itchy eyes and stuffiness begins.

I think the splotchiness was probably just heat related, but you can get rashes from touching flowers and weeds if you are allergic to them.

InactiveI don’t know for sure that Seth has seasonal allergies (but DH & I both do and it seems like we live in the pollen capital of the world) but Seth used to constantly swat and rub at his eyes and nose (even while asleep) and his nose was also always running but clear. I mentioned this to his ENT at one of his appts. and she prescribed Zyrtec. We have been giving it to him and it does seem to help so I am thinking he must have allergies to some extent.

InactiveKaelyn was given zyrtec pretty early on (maybe around 14 months) and is on allegra now. They seem to help with the runny nose and itchy eyes, so I take that to mean that they are probably allergy related. The allergist didn’t test her for seasonal allergies because he said that we wouldn’t do anything (meaning shots) until she was a little bit older.

InactiveAll 3 of ours have spring allergies. Carson was doing great and then hit a horrible road block. Specialist said his nose was gucky although he didn’t have a runny nose, etc. I guess his is post nasal drip – going down the back of the throat and making the reflux worse. I shouldn’t say I didn’t notice anything – he would hold the back of his head.
We tried Claritin (OTC) and Zyrtec but he was way worse at night with wakings with the antihistimines. ?? But he didn’t seem hyper during the day ?? I always wonder if it is my imagination or if something else was bothing him and I just ASSUME it is the new meds. ??
We go in tomorrow and will as the doc about it again.

InactiveBrenda,
Please let us know what the doc says. I sometimes wonder if Zyrtec might not be the best thing for Ellie because she too seems to have more night wakings when I give it to her, not from allergies but from nightmares. It’s odd, but she definitely has more nighmares when I give her Zyrtec, but if I don’t give it to her she wakes up because her nose is stuffy and runny.

InactiveI should mention during this on again/off again antihistimine business he ended up with a sinus infection and was put on Omnicef. It did the trick and he was fine for a few days after the 10 days of antibiotic were up but sure enough he started having horrible nights so we are on a small dose of Omnicef (antibiotic) daily until we can get a drug that will control the allergy symptoms.
I am sorry my posts are so long. I can’t say anything in one or two sentences!! I miss adults!!

InactiveChristine: We go in at 10AM and I will let you know. I know what you mean – and which is worse – the allergies or wakings ??!! and are they even related. UG! So hard to sort out.
I will definately let you know!

InactiveBrenda,
Thanks. Ellie is also prone to sinus infections. I don’t even know if that’s related to allergies or not, but she’s had many more sinus infections that required antibiotic treatment than my other two ever had. And the infections actually started before the allergy symptoms. I think she may even have one now. I’m keeping an eye on it and may have to take her in.

I wonder if Singulair might be better for them? I’ve heard good things about it.
