InactiveMany of you might know that I switched Abby from Prevacid solutabs to Zegerid b/c she was getting irritated about waiting to eat with the Prevacid. She was doing great on 7.5mg 2x’s per day. I got her GI to prescribe 8mg 2x’s per day of the Zegerid.
So we started that dose on the 16th and she started spitting up with her feedings and Dr. Phillips said to divide the dose and give with every bottle (4times per day) and mix with equal parts Mylanta Cherry Supreme. He thought that there might be too much buffer in the 20mg packet for her. I give it to her about 10mins before her bottles. So we started that on Friday and Saturday she got dirrhea. So we stopped using the Mylanta and started mixing it with Tums on Sunday. Well last night she woke up crying and won’t go back to sleep until I fed her. She has been sleeping through the night for the past 2wks without any problems.
So this morning I decided to give her just 2 doses. At 7:30am I gave her 4ml of Zegerid with 4ml of Tums. I thought that maybe dividing it up into 4 doses wasn’t a strong enough of a dose at once to relieve her symptoms b/c of the now waking at night and since we started the Zegerid she has become the 45 min napper.
She used to nap for 2-2.5 hours with a occasional 45min-1hr nap maybe twice per week. Never with every nap. I am really second guessing the switch since she was doing so well on the Prevacid. All this experimenting with the Zegerid is getting to be more of a pain then waiting the 30mins to eat after taking the Prevacid. What does everyone think I should do? Thanks for any input!

InactiveHi hun;
Is she in pain or is it just a sleep issue unrelated to pain? Do you think the short napping/night waking could be developmental (about to sit up, crawl etc) and the timing a coincedence? Could it be a routine issue (more A time, less day sleep needed) Could she be waking at night due to real hunger, from say a growth spurt? Is she in pain when she wakes from the nap early? She having difficulty eating or other symptoms she displays when the reflux is hurting her?
I know you have tried several different ways of administering the drug in the 7 days since you started, is it possible this could be a factor? Is it possible that the dose just isn’t high enough?
All that aside; if Prevacid was working better for her then I’d say go back… especially if she is in Pain. I realize my questions aren’t answers lol, but I know how much you wanted this to work – and I know the hassle (read: torture) it is to make a baby wait to eat. So I wanted to offer other possibilites. Hope this helps a tiny bit!

InactiveSo today after she got up from her 2nd 45 min nap I gave her the Prevacid at 2:45 and fed her at 3:15 and then put her down for a nap at 3:30 and she slept till 5:50pm!!
I don’t know if it was a coincedence or not but she finally had a good nap. We are just going to stay with the Prevacid. Since it was working and the Zegerid has been quite a hassle trying to figure out how much and when to give it to her. It could be that the dose was too low but I know that the GI will not increase it. So we might as well stick with what worked. Thanks for all the advice.

InactiveI had the same dilemna with Myles. Prevacid was working great but I hated the timing around meals thing. He was on three doses per day and it seemed like our entire day revolved around Prevacid and feedings.
It was a pain so I decided to switch to Zegerid, but he hated the taste and wouldn’t take it. This was before Dr. Phillips came up with the Mylanta idea. Maybe he would have taken it with the Mylanta. At the time I decided it wasn’t worth experimenting when things had been going so smoothly with Prevacid so we went back to that. The timing aroud meals did get easier as he got older. Hopefully it will for you, too.I’m glad she’s doing well and sleeping again. Prevacid was such a miracle drug for us.
