InactiveI just wanted to add that there is definitely HOPE for all of us, because my oldest, colicky baby who is now 12 does sleep all night from about 9:00-7:00 and has done that since age 2. He just never needed as much daytime sleep as others his age (naps).
So, please hold onto that hope that it will get better. I haven’t even considered the possibility that Caden may not outgrow this – I’m just counting on it. I’m anxious for the day when he can sleep peacefully and well and the days of reflux are a thing of the past.
What helps me deal with it is finding little steps in the right direction to be positive about. For instance, last night I started a new routine with him where I nurse him to sleep but don’t allow him to nurse all night. I am still sleeping with him, but I just pick him up and encourage him to go back to sleep in my arms instead of nursing. Last night was my first night to try this, and he did SO much better. He slept from 9:00pm-12:00am before waking and then woke approximately every 2 hours. So, for us that is BIG progress over all night nursing!

InactiveI know what you mean about the baby steps in the right direction. Carson also does better without having a bottle throughout the night. I wonder if when he drinks and then gets laid down, his reflux is worse and the rice milk is going up and down and he is swollowing causing air in his tummy and gas and then he wakes due to being uncomfortable and then I give him MORE bottle and then it again creates more air and eventually gas and our whole night is horrible. Makes sense to me. It is hard, however, to get him to go back asleep when all he wants is a drink. Sometimes I just give him a syringe with Mylanta in it and that seems to comfort him without giving a bottle. Of course, too much during the night and he has diareah the next day
. If only we could all just move forward. It seems with reflux you get one step forward, two steps back and eventually end up at the one step forward again but you have lost ground.
I totally think that we are an incredible group of women who are giving their all to their children during this incredibly hard time. I honestly don’t think God will pick just anyone to have a reflux baby. So, I think we can all give ourselves a big pat on the back (and have a brownie)! Even if our relatives, friends and other moms think we are blowing things out of proportion. It is very difficult and we are all inching forward. If God puts it before us he will surely get us through it. (Boy, I am in a good mood today – must have gotten extra sleep last night!)

InactiveBrenda,
How about a squirt of “fake meds” at night if he’s getting too much Mylanta? Liza went through a phase when she was teething in which she would cry out and then go to sleep immediately after I gave her tylenol. I know it doesn’t work that fast so I realized she just got used to getting it and wanted it even when she wasn’t teething. So I made a bottle of “fake tylenol” (diluted cranberry juice) and I’d go in and give her a squirt of that and the little stinker would go right to sleep.

Oh, and thanks for your words of encouragement!! I’m always amazed when I think back at how hard life was with my reflux babies….I’m amazed that I survived and that I took such good care of them despite the hardship that reflux was.
You’re so right, we are all a bunch of terrific moms!!!March 29, 2007 at 1:57 pm #28894Anonymous
InactiveBrenda,
Thank you so much for that awesome, positive post! I really needed that today. You are so right with what you said about other people thinking we’re blowing things out of proportion…I have had several comments from family members (including dh) that I’m overreacting and that Caden is just a fussy baby, and even that he is being a little selfish!!! Can you imagine a 5 month old being capable of being selfish??? Come on. Anyway, I agree that this is an exceptional group of ladies and that we are all doing everything we can to help our babies in whatever way we know how. I feel very fortunate to have found this site.
P.s. When Caden was first born, I would pray to God thanking Him for baby Caden, but also telling Him that I knew he wouldn’t give us more than we could handle, but I felt like this was more than I could handle being my third colicky baby and fourth child. After I prayed, I always felt reassured that YES I could handle this and felt renewed to go at it again. Thanks for the reminder and a much needed lift that I’m sure we can all use
