InactiveI know I can’t expect him to sleep well when he has a cold/cough, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas to help him sleep better that we haven’t already tried.
He is elevated even higher than normal.
We are using a humidifier.
We have a fan for noise.
We have dark curtains to block out light.
We give his Prevacid according to the Marci-Kids recommendations.
We have been giving him sudafed (psudoephedrine hcl) for his congetion/cough at night but it seems to wire him up. We have also tried giving him it with Zyrtec, but it didn’t stop the wiring effect.Any more ideas? Any other meds to try instead of the sudafed?

InactiveSometimes we try benadryl for the cold. Sudafed also mykes my kids wired- decongestants often have that effect. Benadryl is an antihistamine so it often makes them sleepy (an added bonus).
We also like the benelyn plug-ins… they basically emit menthol vapours that ease congestion when you plug them into the wall.
About the prevacid, are you having the compound made correctly? Prevacid compounds are very difficult to make so that they remain stable. (Sorry if I’ve already told you this and sound like a broken record… sometimes it’s hard to keep track).

InactiveI would also say to give give the decongestants a miss…I asked my dr the other day and he said that there is so much stuff in them they can react to anything in them so its better not to bother because they don’t make that much of a difference….this is also what I have found when using them so I don’t bother anymore.
Just some non med ideas…
Are you using saline nasal drops…if given consistently these can help.
Running a hot shower and steaming the bathroom and placing bub in it.
Baby vicks on the chest (as well as the plug ins)
Is it possible the cold/congestion is giving him “aches in the head and face”. I know that I get sinus often with a cold and my face and head ache and ache. Maybe some motrin to see if this helps?
Alana has been like this for about three weeks and it is a bugger!!! I haven’t found any magic solution yet…although Benadryl did help a little, but I have run out and it is not over the counter here so I have to ask the pharmacist and they are not overly keen on giving it out…they seem to want to give the decongestants all the time.

InactiveWhen Adriana has trouble breathing from a cold I use 2 humidifiers in the bedroom with the door closed. I use saline nasal drops and a bulb syrange. Tylenol for aches and pains.

InactiveI use the bendryl as well, but try to save it for only when it is really bad. Also, the hot shower steam is another great idea for getting the runny nose out. I hope he feels better soon!
Oh, the only other thing I can think of is if you think his waking is due to reflux and break through acid, try an H2 blocker, or pepcid complete at night.

InactiveI’ve taken sudafed many times without any problems. Natalia, I’m surprised that your OBGYN let you take it… mine gave me such a hard time saying it wasn’t safe and refused! I went to our GP and he said the same thing. I had bad eustacian tube dysfunction and was begging. s&h’s mum2007-4-11 17:34:16
