InactiveI’m new here and noticed that many people have the reverse sleeping issue from me. My 11 week old rarely takes a decent nap during the day. He only catnaps. However at night he usually has a 4-6 hour stretch before waking to nurse. The only problem is that once that stretch is over he wakes frequently again until 7:00am when he seems wide awake again. He is often fussy during the day, so I know he is tired, but the poor thing just can’t stay asleep (because of reflux I’m pretty sure). I wonder if he’s just so exhausted at the end of the day that he finally conks out for 6 hours! He has actually slept up to 9 hours at night without waking (only twice). Most nights it’s 6 hours. Anyway, is it unusual for a child with reflux to sleep at night or does it happen that way for some? I’m asking because my ped was a little skeptical that he has reflux at first since he sleeps well at night.
Thanks,
Emily

InactiveAll babies are different. My first refluxer was up every 20 – 60 minutes every night of her life until she outgrew her reflux, but my second refluxer slept very well. His main issues were related to feeding. I think it’s more unusual for a refluxer to sleep well, but it can happen.

InactiveSarah was the exact same way! She was ALWAYS great through the night but her small catnaps during the day made everyone exhausted! Don’t use sleeping through the night as a guideline for determining reflux because it doesn’t mean anything! Now that she is on the right meds and SOOO much happier, I am amazed to see how long she is capable of sleeping during the day, even at 8 months old. It makes me realize now how incredibly exhausted and overtired she must have been. No wonder she was super cranky!!!
Good luck and I hope you’re able to get a proper treatment for your little one!Amy

InactiveAs soon as I started inclining his crib mattress at night, Bryce slept very well, even before he was on medicine. I hope your little boy gets some relief soon, so he can sleep better. Good luck!

InactivePrior to Zantac , Alana to was very disrupted during the day with sleep, then did a 6 hour stretch at night (after 2hrs of fusssing). I put it down to reflux bothering her during the day and overtiredness. After Zanatc her daytime improved a little. Post Zoton she started sleeping through the night and regular napping during the day. I think some reflux babies can sleep for long stretches, but they really improve their overall sleep routine once their reflux is controlled.

InactiveWell, last night was NOT a good night! So, now we’ve gone from bad days/ok nights to bad days and nights

I wrote our ped an email yesterday asking if he would up the dose. He wants me to try dividing the same 15mg into 3 times per day first, then if that doesn’t help he’ll increase it…so, we’ll see. I just want relief for hom NOW. I understand his reason for being cautious, but I hate to wait for this to work when most likely it won’t be enogh.
Do you all recommend seeing a GI specialist?
Thanks,
Emily

InactiveMany of the moms here have had the same problem trying to convince their ped gi’s to give a high enough dose fo Prevacid, so seeing a gi isn’t always the answer. But, I’d probably make an appointment anyway because you can always cancel it if things improve.
In the meantime I’d print and fax all the marci-kids info and fax it to your current ped. Write a letter explaining how much pain your son seems to be in and requesting to please be allowed to try the marci-kids recommeded dose of prevacid.
The information in this link is what I think convinced Myles’ doctor.

Good luck and keep trying. It took me 6 weeks to get Myles on the right dose but it was so worth all the work!

InactiveWas Myles only on Prevacid or some type of antacid too? My son, Caden, only takes Prevacid.

InactiveHe was only on Prevacid. It seemed to control his pain perfectly, except that he was an early riser (up at 4 am most days). I’ve since learned that some babies need an H2 Blocker before bed (in addition to the PPI during the day) because of breakthrough acid in the wee hours of the morning. I don’t really know if that would have stopped his early am wakings, but I would have tried it if I had known about it back then. He’s still stirs most mornings around 4 am but will go right back to sleep if I give him his nuk. He used to be up for 1 – 2 hours before going back to sleep.

InactiveBrianna has never really been a stellar naper, but she usually sleeps 11.5-12 hours at night, so I have never really super worried about it. She rarely gets cranky, I just think sometimes babies don’t like to nap. However, that is Brianna now. Prior to being on a good dose of medication, Brianna still had a hard time napping and would wake up every three hours or so at night. When I added the Zantac at night, that is when Brianna started sleeping in later than 5am…she now wakes up around 6:30-8am.

InactiveThanks everyone! At least their is hope with the right medicine and dosage it will improve. I have new hope now – I can’t tell you all how down I’ve been with this lately (although I’m sure you know), and I already feel so encouraged.
