Inactiveokay, so i tried spoon feeding him cereal again since he gets it in his bottles. this time he was really hungry…he made the disgusted face again and spit it out and screamed for a bottle.
then the next day i tried some squash-same reaction! he acts like its something so gross. in your opinion what does this mean? he is a picky eater, or is he just not ready for any solids?October 5, 2006 at 3:07 pm #15020Anonymous
InactiveWhen Marshall was a little over 4 months we tried to start him on solids too. First was the rice cereal. He hated it!! So a week later I tried oatmeal with a little banannas in it. I new he was not allergic to the oatmeal because he used to get it in his bottles. He then started to try to eat it but not real happy. So then I tried sweet potatoes and with much success he loved them. He may just now like the taste of the cereal or squash. Marshall still does not like squash but will eat them if he has to. You may want to just start with sweet potatoes and see what he does. If he likes it then you can add it to his cereal. Just a thought.

InactiveIt’s hard to tell what the problem is based on your description. A disgusted face is often normal b/c they’re not used to the taste or texture. How many bites does he open his mouth for?
The thing that I don’t like about your description is that he’s crying about it. If they’re just fussy about taste or texture, or just not sure about something new, then they usually will let the spoon into their mouth, and then taste a bit and push the rest out. Or take one mouthful and then turn their head away from the spoon. Or sometimes they won’t open altogether. But the only one who ever screamed or cried when eating food in our family was Hailey (or me, if dh cooked me dinner!!
) You can always try sweet potato (either homemade or jarred) which usually is a favourite and see if he likes it.
But as I said before, I personally would be in no hurry to rush. Especially since he was having feeding troubles before getting onto the neocate and four months is on the early side anyhow. If I could do it again I wouldn’t have rushed with either of my kids.

InactiveHi Natalia,
Both of my boys did this when they first started solids. Like Lori said, I think they mainly are just not use to the new texture. I would just keep trying for a few days and they would usually get use to it and start liking it more. It just takes a little while. So you might want to just keep trying for a few days. If he still doesn’t accept it, you could wait a couple weeks and try again. Also, it seemed to work better for me if I waited until they were a little hungry, but not quite ready for their next meal. If they were too hungry, they just cried because they didn’t understand why they weren’t getting their milk. They didn’t know this was food and would fill them up too
They learn though.
