InactiveI know, the topic is really gross but I just wanted the opinions of all of the expert moms on this board. Starting Saturday evening (2 times), Sunday morning (1 time), Monday morning (1 time) and now late this afternoon (1 time) our 4 month old has brought up what looks like her whole bottle when she has her final burp. It still looks like formula so I don’t think it would qualify as vomit but it seems like an awful lot to be just a spit up. She really has never been much of a spitter before. We had her on Pedialite for much of Sunday and restarted her on 1/2 strength formula on Sunday evening which stayed with her just fine. She is happy and content the rest of the time, even smiled at my hubby right after he soaked his shirt and pants
. She usually takes 4-5 ounces at a bottle. This afternoon, she took 2 ounces, then burped, then 2 more ounces, then burp and a formula bath for Mommy. It seems if it was a stomach bug, she wouldn’t keep anything down there. I waited about 15 minutes then; she drank 2 ounces, waited another 10 minutes then drank 2 more ounces and all of it stayed with her. I just don’t know???On another lovely note, she has had really loose poopies for the last 2 weeks. I have had her to the doctor twice in that time period, the first time we thought it could be due to trying to switch to the Target brand formula, the other because we thought she had an ear infection. She is back on Isomil Advance and didn’t have an ear infection, only a cold which the MD said could be causing the loose poop. Well, it is a week later and it is still really loose. Any ideas?? We wondered if it could be due to teething – no teeth have broken through but her fingers/fist are in her mouth all of the time.
Sorry for the grossness and rambling of this topic. Just looking for a few ideas before I check with her doctor tomorrow (again)

InactiveCould she have a problem with the Soy formula? Many babies do –
especially those that also have a problem with milk-based formulas.
Have you tried something like Alimentum?May 31, 2006 at 9:14 am #8838Anonymous
InactiveRight now, I seriously feel that it is a stomach bug as both my hubby and I got sick over night. Feeling better now and am takiing Abby to the doctor this morning.
We had tried her on Alimentum and she spit that up worse than Isomil. Up until the past couple of weeks, the Isomil has been working great and she has been on it since she was 3 weeks old. It was more of a personal decision to have her on the soy. Thanks for the idea anyway!!

InactiveMy ped told me the difference between a spit up and vomit is the amount. So, if it’s the whole feeding it’s definately vomit. Even two hours after eating my daughter will vomit up the entire feeding and it still looks just like formula. I guess that’s just because that’s all that is in there.

InactiveMost of the time if your child vomits they won’t be able to immediately eat more and keep it down. This is because the stomach is still irritated and any food that goes into it will cause more spasms and hence more vomiting. So the fact that she would bring up the formula and then 10 minutes later take 2 more ounces and be fine makes me think that it’s just spit up. The other thing is that when they vomit their tummies will get really hard (you can feel it). Vomiting is a forceful action whereas spitting up is not.
Spit up can look like a lot more than it is. I remember when my first DD went through a phase where she spit up larger volumes. I absolutely freaked out the first time it happened because the formula just flowed out of her mouth and kept coming.
I would have swore that the entire bottle had just come back up. But it was really less than an ounce. And she was completely nonpulsed by the whole thing. Try an experiement… take an ounce of formula and pour it into a towel and see how much it is. It looks like a lot more than it really is.Karen

InactiveThis spit up/vomit literally drenched her bib, the burp cloth and most of a towel that I had on my lap. We went to her regular doctor yesterday who told us to continue with pedialite until this morning then give her Isomil DF for the diarrhea. Well, that came up 3 hours after she drank it, totally soaking herself and her bed. I tried calling my doctor’s office and as of now, we still haven’t received a call back. Needless to say, we are going to a specialist this afternooon. Basicallly diarrhea for almost 3 weeks and throwing up almost a week -we want another opinion. Hopefully it is just me being paranoid but I have read alot about pyloric stenosis and many of the symptoms match what has been going on with her. Hopefully I will be wrong

InactiveRobin,
It sounds like a NASTY stomach virus. The diarrhea from these bugs can least for weeks in infants and toddlers. Hope you hear from the doctor soon, and that your appt with the specialist goes well.
Isn’t Pyloric Stenosis usually present at birth? I didn’t think it could develop in older babies.
I’d be doing the same thing as you, taking her to the doctor, and a specialist if my reg doctor didn’t have answers, but I bet it’s just a virus and she’ll be fine.
Hope she’s feeling better soon.

InactiveI read that pyloric stenosis can develop as late as 6 months of age – who knows. Will have to see what the doctor says today.
Thanks for all the suggestions!!

InactiveWell, the pediatrician wants to try her on thickened Alimentum until tomorrow (when he goes on vacation – oh goodie). He said to use 1 tsp rice cereal per ounce of formula. Is that a usual amount to make it thick enough? I just want to be sure because when we tried this formula before, it quickly worsened her refulx and after having mostly perfection since early March, I don’t want to ruin things. He wants me to give her 1/2 oz per hour for 2 feedings, then 1 oz per hour for 2 feedings, then 1 1/2 oz per hour for 2 and so on. So far, she has made it through the 2 half ounce feedings and 1 one ounce feeding and it has stayed with her. She is not too thrilled with me right now as she is hungry and hasn’t had anything but pedialite in her little tummy since Tuesday afternoon.
Then he had the nerve to start talking about putting her on Zantac instead of Zegerid – I cut him off and said sorry, we are not messing with her meds until we rule out everything else. He said that once a day is enough for PPI’s, then I had to launch into my “educate the doctor” session. When will they ever learn???????
If she happens to start vomiting this formula, then it is off to a specialist for tests tomorrow. At least he has someone he knows in Sioux Falls who would be able to get her in tomorrow or over the weekend. At least he was going to call him and fill him in on the details.
Hurry up and wait

InactiveSo, he thinks the vomiting is caused by worsening reflux? What did he say about the diarrhea?
Or, is he thinking it’s a stomach virus and this is the way to slowly acclimate her gut to keeping things down again?
That’s great that you didn’t let him take her off Zegerid. Too bad though that you had to “educate” him again. It really is so very frustrating.

As for thickening, my doctor always says 1 tbs per 2 ounces, but it may different for alimentum. Is alimentum very thin to begin with?
I’m glad to hear that there is a specialist you can take her to besides that guy in Fargo. When Myles was having problems a few weeks ago and I talked to our doctor about a seeing specialist, she immediately said she would not recommend him and would send us to Minneapolis if needed. So, you were right about him.

I hope the alimentum works for Abby and that she is better very soon.

InactiveChristine: I think what he was thinking is that she wasn’t tolerating the soy very well and that it may be causing the vomiting and diarrhea. He also came back to the exam room with something that said that Zegerid can at times cause diarrhea but in the same sentence it said constipation is a possible side effect. I truly believe if it was medication related, we would have seen problems sooner – but who am I? I am ONLY her mother. I told my husband the doctor would have to shoot me before we would mess with her medications before we rule out everything else. I also gave Joel a call and got more “fuel” for my idiot doctor reflux fighting machine. Thank goodness for all of his good information and ideas.
The doctor I saw today is a new pediatrician in Aberdeen. Seemed very nice and also thorough. I do plan to print out the Marci-kids stuff and bring it to him. I think he is young enough that maybe he would still be open to new info.
So far, the 2 onehalf ounce feedings, the 2 one ounce feedings and the 2 one and a half ounce feedings have stayed with her. Hope to get in a 2 ounce feeding before off to lala land.
That is too funny what your doctor said about the guy in Fargo – guess my instincts can’t be too far off

Still have to plan the Storybook Land adventure – hopefully we get things back to smooth sailing soon then we’ll have to talk!!

InactiveHi Robin,
I’m so glad she is keeping things down again. Maybe the alimentum will do the trick. That’s great that you talked to Joel…he’s so helpful. And I understand why you wouldn’t want to take her off of Zegerid..she’d been doing so well for so long on it that it seems highly unlikely that the medication was the problem.
Mommies do have terrific intuition.

I hope she continues to keep her feedings down and that she can tolerate full feeds again soon.
And, we’d love to go to SBL sometime soon. My girls ask about it everytime we drive past walmart because they know that’s the way there.
Could you email me your email? Then I’ll have it my address book and not have to look for it when the time comes. ndakotarose@yahoo.com
I hope Abby is back to herself soon.
Christine
